Sister on holiday with Covid

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

The point is that with any Covid, virus, cold type illness, some people will be really unwell and some will be asymptomatic. Some people will have flu and not know it and some will be in bed for 3 weeks. People have been getting post viral ongoing fatigue for as long as I have been around. It is not a new thing either.

Mmm, I think the distinction is that normally someone who had the flu virus but only had a cough wouldn't be isolating, because they wouldn't know they had it and wouldn't be able to test. Indeed, lots of people think it can't be flu if you're not confined to bed. So routinely, people with a bit of a cough go about their normal business.

Covid is new and unusual in that people who are asymptomatic or only have minor symptoms often know about it, which isn't something we're used to with other illnesses.

Lovemusic82 · 13/10/2023 16:39

Obviously there are other people on board with it, they probably caught it on board. Things spread like wildfire in a cruise (which is why I wouldn’t go on one), I think it’s a bit late isolating now as most people that are going to catch it probably already have.I caught it at a festival a few months ago, it’s kind of expected when your near lots of people.

NotAscoob · 13/10/2023 16:40

And this is why I don’t do cruises.

Whole other story but holed up in some homogeneous group out in the ocean doesn’t appeal to me.

As for Covid , of course you aren’t being unreasonable.

You are being considerate- a lot more than many people.

But I will be flamed, you will be flamed … Covid is, after all, “ just a cold”….

Never mind the vulnerable, elderly, how it affects each and every one of us differently etc etc …

People give no fucks. That’s the crux of it.

Sausage1989 · 13/10/2023 16:41

Wait...what?! Have you been living under a rock?? You don't have to test anymore or isolate or do anything.... I work with VERY vulnerable people and I live with someone on the Medically extremely vulnerable list but I don't test?? Whats the point in testing? It's not going to change anything if you do have it because you don't stay at home anymore and still go to work etc 😂you're off ya rocker aren't you! Protect your family?? What from a cold??

Pretty easy to be considerate when it’s entirely someone else you’re directing to do the actual considering isn’t it?!

YANBU

She can't leave the ship, but she should not be leaving her cabin (if she were in UK then it's stay home for 5 days unless absolutely essential)

And of course the ship's medical team need to know about a communicable disease on board, whether it's covid, D&V, impetigo, chicken pox or whatever.
Honestly, I wonder sometimes if covid is doing something to people's cognitive function, as basic common sense seems to have vanished

I think that is your made up rule

Hard hat is firmly on!!!!

SacAMain · 13/10/2023 16:44

She's coughing.. but if she had tested negative for covid, would you react differently?

Testing is pretty pointless if you get hysterical about covid but ignore everything else. Vulnerable (and non-vulnerable) are at risk just the same.

It must be seriously exhausting to avoid schools, public transports, any public place like cinema, restaurants, supermarket where you get in contact with Covid! How long do you intend on keeping that up?

zingally · 13/10/2023 16:45

I has suspected covid on a cruise earlier in the summer.
A 2-week cruise and I got a cough that lasted about 5 days, quite early on in the trip.
Honestly, it didn't even occur to me that it might be covid until I realised later that my sense of smell was messed up, and still isn't completely right 3 months later.
I probably bought it onto the ship with me.
At this point, covid is just one of those things.

Zoreos · 13/10/2023 16:49

YABU and behaving like a control freak. I’d rather have COVID which has mutated to little more than any other seasonal viral infection going than have to put up with the sort of crap you’re dishing out to her. Forcing her to pack and do a COVID test when there’s no legal requirement to and emotionally manipulating her by ordering her to isolate. I’d like to say on her behalf because she’s clearly too nice for her own good - jog on! All of the vulnerable population are on at least their fifth or sixth vaccination. Honestly don’t know where your types of people get off bossing people around, give your head a wobble man!

Peterpiperspickledpepper · 13/10/2023 16:49

I work in crit care and we are already having sick patients admitted with it. Some bright spark came in a few weeks ago despite having a 2 day history of quite clear Covid symptoms and now 5 of us are off, most of us quite poorly. I’d 99% recovered from long Covid and it’s set me back months with tiredness. We are told to test daily and cannot resume until we have x 2 clear tests with a 24 hour interval between or 10 days post start of symptoms. Ignore the naysayers OP. You are being considerate as others have said.

IncognitoMam · 13/10/2023 16:49

@Lovemusic82 never heard anything so daft. You avoid cruises because of covid yet caught it at a festival 😂

Katiemag · 13/10/2023 16:58

I personally agree with your approach, OP - but I think we’re in the minority and I’ve had to accept this.

I expect the cruise ship does have a policy. I caught norovirus on a cruise a while back and had to isolate in my cabin for 48 hours from last symptom. Personally I’d much rather have a bout of noro -which is unpleasant but short-lived provided you stop eating until you feel better - than Covid.

You've set a boundary that you won’t have your sister in your car with your family when she’s infectious. I don’t think you can do anymore.

fine, but are you keeping up with flu test, Measles test, and god knows what infection is going round at the moment?

COVID is not the black plague, and it's far from the only issue.

What happens if you have "covid symptoms" but keep testing negative? You 'd hope there's common sense and people would stay home, but do they?

Tinklyheadtilt · 13/10/2023 16:59

YABU. This isn't 2020.

DuplicateUserName · 13/10/2023 17:02

Have all these people who think everyone should be isolating when they test positive, done a day's work at all in the last year or so?

Or do you all have understanding employers or a job that allows you to work from home?

I always assume they all have WFH jobs and can't grasp the fact not everyone does.

CrazyCatLover · 13/10/2023 17:05

As other posters have said, YABU. There are much worse bugs around ATM.

I have just tested positive, and feeling quite rough, fluey. Started feeling really rough today, so wanted to test so that I know and can act accordingly, and considerately.
My work colleague cares for an elderly father.
I am due to see a friend tomorrow who works as a driving instructor.
I couldn't really just carry on not knowing.

It was ridiculous in 2020, never mind now.

Yabu. Covid is everywhere. There are no rules to isolate anymore and barely anyone is testing.
It’s a mild cold now. We live with it

Oh dear. How is anyone this stupid? It’s not a cold. It’s never been a cold. It is a multi organ disease that if you actually took the time to read actual science you would realise it pretty nasty. Sorry for the inconvenient truth for the dimwits

ask anyone working on covid wards back then, it wasn't so ridiculous.

This 'mild cold' has knocked my adult daughter off her feet for 3 weeks and she's still not back to normal. There's another thread on mumsnet headed 'This is not just a mild cold'. It's full of people saying it's knocked them flat.

I had a cold/virus that knocked me flat for 6.5 weeks recently. It wasn’t Covid. Not just Covid does that.
