Sister on holiday with Covid

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

YABU

Chances are she has caught in on the cruise so there are many others with it who aren't isolating in their cabins

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:48

@BogRollBOGOF no, our other sister is collecting her...

She needs to speak to the medical centre on cruise ship, they will advise her what she should do. Yes, it’s all around, but personally I wouldn’t want to fly home knowing I had Covid. That’s what having insurance with Covid cover will help with.

Exactly what I said to her - thank you :)

YANBU

If people don't take responsibility and try to limit the spread, we're just digging ourselves a bigger hole of I'll health and economic collapse.

It's not just a cold. It's a vascular disease that damages your blood vessels and by consequence can damage many organs in your body.

If she leaves her cabin she should be in an N95 that is tightly fitted, not a surgical.

You are right not to give her a lift home from the airport - protect your family from infection!

YANBU

She can't leave the ship, but she should not be leaving her cabin (if she were in UK then it's stay home for 5 days unless absolutely essential)

And of course the ship's medical team need to know about a communicable disease on board, whether it's covid, D&V, impetigo, chicken pox or whatever.
Honestly, I wonder sometimes if covid is doing something to people's cognitive function, as basic common sense seems to have vanished

It’s not stay at home in the UK, there are no regulations unless you work for the NHS!

Malarandras · 13/10/2023 14:55

You can’t force your own values and behaviour choices on others. That’s the whole point of a free society. There are no laws in place now so your sister is free to act as she chooses. If you want a dictatorial society you are in the wrong country!

No - holiday insurance won't cover you changing flights because of covid any more. Only if you're too ill to fly.

If flying (with covid) is legal/allowed in the country you're travelling to/from, then your insurance company will expect you to fly. You can change flights if you want, but your insurance won't pay as it would be a change of your own choosing.

Right ok, I've accepted I'm BU. But she's been told to make other plans to get back from the airport tomorrow as I'm not putting mine or my families health at risk.

Are you still going to work? Children at school? Going to the shops etc as normal? Because if you are you are literally at risk every single day

TTCnewbies · 13/10/2023 15:02

Covid has been around now for almost 4 years, we have to have to get out of the 2020 mindset.
We've all seen the devastating effects of covid but you need to remember this was mostly pre vaccinations etc...
You wouldn't stay home with a cold and covid is just the same.
I genuinely worry for people who tip toe around common illnesses now and really do think you should seek some help for health anxiety. It's really worrying.

You don't have to isolate with covid any more, so most people don't. All her isolation will achieve will be to spoil her holiday, because nobody else will be so the vulnerable are not protected anyway.

Cas112 · 13/10/2023 15:05

Yabu

DirectionToPerfection · 13/10/2023 15:06

I think you're stuck in a time warp OP, and yes YABU. And I say this as someone who lost family to Covid in 2020, when it was a novel virus and we had no immunity to it.

The situation is very different in 2023.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 13/10/2023 15:07

You're being a dick.

I hope she has a fabulous last day.

loulouljh · 13/10/2023 15:15

Yes you are unreasonable. It is a cold. Ger a grip.

ohtowinthelottery · 13/10/2023 15:15

Our local Health Trust sent an email to all it's staff telling them not to do Covid tests as it would mean they might be off work longer than their symptoms persisted. This includes front line staff in face to face roles with vulnerable people!
I think your sister on a cruise ship petri dish pales into insignificance!

LlynTegid · 13/10/2023 15:19

I agree with you OP. Not everyone on a cruise will be a healthy person, and I remember at one stage in early 2020 there was a cruise ship that had so many deaths it was listed alongside the death toll from individual countries.

ttcat37 · 13/10/2023 15:24

YANBU. It’s a selfish to risk spreading it to anyone else. She might not be vulnerable but others might be.
To people saying ‘it’s only a cold’, well I don’t want your cold either!

alpenguin · 13/10/2023 15:24

Gymmum82 · 13/10/2023 14:09

Yabu. Covid is everywhere. There are no rules to isolate anymore and barely anyone is testing.
It’s a mild cold now. We live with it

It is not a mild cold. People are still dying.
i have it for the third time in a few months and I already had permanent heart and lung damage from getting it last year. Colds have never done that to me. Stop being so wilfully ignorant

BlinkerGoBlink · 13/10/2023 15:29

I think YABU, purely as I assume she wouldn't even know she had covid if you hadn't given her a test and there are no protocols to follow so she must have it quite mildly.

HOWEVER. I type this on DAY 7 of covid and I really, really need to shout this from the rooftops:

THIS DOESN'T FEEL LIKE A FECKIN' COLD!!

I am fully vaccinated, healthy, not overweight, not in any way clinically vulnerable and it has been really, REALLLLLYYY SHIT.

I have chosen to isolate at home because I honestly couldn't live with the guilt of giving this to someone. I've had uncontrollable temperature, burning chest, inability to breathe agonising cough, etc etc. I was quite scared at one point.

Covid still hits everyone differently. First time I had it, yes, definitely like a cold, this time FUUUUU NO! That's all. End of vent.

liveforsummer · 13/10/2023 15:33

. Colds have never done that to me.

MYbe not but many viruses that cause cold or mild flu type symptoms for most have done this to some people. You just know a lot this particular one as there happens to be a test

x2boys · 13/10/2023 15:33

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:18

@Catza I've never had it (as far as I am aware).
I work with vulnerable people so I still test twice a week. I feel very strong about Covid as I have seen how it has affected people.

But assuming your sister doesn't work with vulnerable people then she doesn't have to test ,we are four years into.this now ,there are no rules or restrictions and we have vaccines and treatment.

cremona · 13/10/2023 15:34

YANBU but don’t expect most people on MN to recognise that.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2023 15:34

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:13

Seriously im BU? It's on the rise again, so even more reason to isolate surely?

I'm a nurse. We still have to go in if positive.

x2boys · 13/10/2023 15:38

liveforsummer · 13/10/2023 14:22

Nonsense. We are expected to come in to work providing we are well enough. No luxury of 5 days any longer

Indeed ,some many people smugly patting themselves on their backs for staying at home doing the right thing I assume they can all.work from home
No thought for those who can't and are expected to.work regardless of Covid .
