I have cameras inside and outside my house because of a burglary - AIU re nanny ?

Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

Even burgled a few times, once when I was in the house. Terrifying. Still dont want cameras inside.
Cameras dont catch thieves, all they do is cover their faces and wear gloves. And by the time the police come to look at your footage of covered faces it's far too late. That's even if they come out. Theres been a few burglaries locally recently and not one police officer showed up.

Cameras dont catch thieves

Yes they do, my neighbour installed a camera at the top of the staircase pointing down, when they got broken into the thief's all wore hoodies outside and the the outside cameras did not capture their faces. But when they were inside and took their hoods down to see and it captured every single one of their faces as they walked up the stairs (inside) and the police used this footage to identify every one of them.

I have since installed the same.

We've got a panic room, but wouldn't dream of having cameras indoors. 😮

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 08/10/2023 17:09

I thought quite a few people had them too! If you show her how to switch them on and off I'm not sure what the problem is.

Hawkins0009 · 08/10/2023 17:09

@camerawomana good security measures, id prefer them active all day, nothing to hide and all that

DamnUserName21 · 08/10/2023 17:10

Not sure why having inside cameras in one's own home is 'creepy.'
In terms of your nanny, lots of people work in environments with indoor cameras in the communal/office areas/hallways.
If the nanny doesn't like it, she can quit.

No one is filming you. It's not about you. It's just a camera in a room. It records everything, it's not going after just you and filing you. Everyone I have told said ' finally '. I must just know very different people to the average mumsnetter !

Calm down. With regards to cctv, filming and recording are the same thing!

This may have GDPR consequences for you as your nanny is an employee. She would have subject access rights over the internal footage in which she appears. If she leaves, you would have to tell anyone new coming in that you have CCTV inside your house, which is what it is. I would get rid of the internal cameras.

It’s ok. Because she’s told the nanny that she has the cameras in her house.

Yep, I agree. For your nanny, her workplace is your home. Lots of workplaces have CCTV. As long as she's aware of it (like workers in other workplaces), there's no problem. If she doesn't like it, she can try to get a job somewhere else without CCTV (ever reducing number of places!).

LatteLady · 08/10/2023 17:33

As this is a workplace, have you completed a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA)? How long are you retaining the information for? You do realise that your nanny can apply for a Subject Access Report (SAR) on any information that you hold on her which would include the comments you have posted. I would be quite concerned about the comments you have made on this thread about her including "If she wants to look for another job anyway, she can do so. I'm trying to gently get rid of her anyway." could be contrued as constructive dismissal. I would suggest you get some legal advice before you actually need it in court... and finally, no, it is really unusual to have cameras in your house.

Aroundtown · 08/10/2023 17:33

Your home is currently her place of work, not her private space, if she objects to CCTV in her workplace she can seek employment somewhere without any cameras. I really don’t understand her issue, but each to their own.

Firebug007 · 08/10/2023 17:36

It's fine, most offices are covered with cameras, as long as people know they're there then no problem. If she's uncomfortable you can bet your bottom dollar there's a reason why 🤷‍♀️

WillowCraft · 08/10/2023 15:02

I don't even have baby monitor cameras, the whole thing is creepy.

I mean, we all mostly agree a house full of cameras is mental, but to include baby monitors in that as ‘creepy’ is peak hyperbolic Mumsnet. 😂

cottonwoolbrain · 08/10/2023 17:43

We have cameras inside and outside on the advice of the police because DP was subject to some very serious death threats a few years ago. We've got a fire proof letterbox for the same reason and other security measures.

However, I don't know anyone else who does - our circumstances aren't really normal in that respect

TheValueOfEverything · 08/10/2023 17:44

This thread reminded me of a novel called ‘The Every’ by Dave Eggars. The book imagines Amazon, Google and Meta merging to make an unaccountable super-power tech company named ‘The Every’ as it controls everything.

The company convinces the population to instal smart speakers and cameras in their houses for convenience and for personal safety. It stores the recorded audio, then monitors it using AI; first for commercial gain and data collection, then eventually the company allows police and social services real time access to people’s home footage to pick up warning signs and prevent domestic abuse and crime.

Privacy becomes a thing of the past, ‘transparency’ is all - any desire for privacy is a sign that someone has something to hide.
Trust and true connection between people, between parents and their children, withers away. Good book. Prescient.

ManchesterLu · 08/10/2023 17:44

I would hate that if someone was spying on me (or at least had the ability to, even if they didn't).

Motion detectors that can be set while the house is empty is all you need inside, with actual cameras on the front and back of the property.

billy1966 · 08/10/2023 17:46

I honestly haven't given them being on constantly any thought.

They are separate to our security system which is off more than it is on because of the constant coming and going day and night in this house.

They surround our house and cover our entire garden and drive.

They are angled to cover all access points which would definitely record me if I am standing near those areas.

Fortunately we have never been burgled, but I was definitely under the impression they are a greater deterrent than an alarm.

I think many work places have them and I would be wary of anyone minding my child in my home that would have a problem with them.

DonnaDonna0 · 08/10/2023 17:59

Do you have a contract of employment with your nanny? If it is stipulated in there about the cameras not a lot she can do if it’s not you may be in breach of the contract.

Castleview6 · 08/10/2023 18:01

camerawomana · 08/10/2023 14:38

So I'll tell her how to switch on and off.

If she wants to look for another job anyway, she can do so. I'm trying to gently get rid of her anyway. And no, I won't be hiring a new nanny, so this won't be an issue again. I'll keep the cameras because I feel safer having them.

I’m trying to gently get rid of her.

Thats a horrible way to talk about someone you’re employing to look after your children - I hope she’s not reading this. With suggestions of cameras (which you know she doesn’t like) and this comment it could be viewed as constructive dismissal. But maybe that’s ok because loads of your friends and family do it.

Willyoujustbequiet · 08/10/2023 18:06

No one I know has cameras outside let alone inside the house.

It's weird and stalky to have them inside.

I'd hate to live in such a high crime area

fyn · 08/10/2023 18:09

We have a camera in our house but they are only on when we ‘arm’ it. It covers the playroom and a back door.

southlondoner02 · 08/10/2023 18:11

The thing about inside cameras which would concern me most is children growing up thinking they have no entitlement to privacy. Ok, babies need watching but as kids get older they need privacy. As technology has advanced abusive partners increasingly use cameras to control their families. In fact the only time s I hear of cameras inside it's when they're being misused in this way.

I feel the same about tracking kids phones- I don't want my daughter thinking this is normal behaviour. We should be allowed time and space to ourselves, inside and outside our houses.

luckysonofagun · 08/10/2023 18:26

Tbh I'd be wondering why the nanny doesn't want the cameras there. What is she hiding?

Robbiesraft · 08/10/2023 18:28

What comfort do you get from cameras watching you inside your home that could possibly compensate for the lack of privacy and security risk of them being hacked? Yes, there will be someone who finds this data useful. Or someone who just wants to watch the human zoo channel. I understand the external cameras, but no more.

And just watch your DC properly. If they're that little, be in the same room as them. It's a pain, but by the time (if) you've spotted the lamp with the heavy base is about to be yanked off the table onto a head, its too late to rush in and catch it.

camerawomana · 08/10/2023 18:28

I’m trying to gently get rid of her.

That just means that she has ' soft notice ' that if she finds something else, she can go. Because I don't want to leave her without a job. The camera thing has nothing to do with that. I'm not trying to make her leave. I only mentioned this because everyone was saying how shit I am and that they'd leave me high and dry if they were my nanny. I'm fine if she leaves me high and dry. But I won't leave her high and dry. There aren't that many nanny jobs where we live.

Most people don’t have cameras inside their houses I don’t think. Not people I know anyway. It’s your house so if you want them inside out them up. But your nanny is completely reasonable to be unhappy about that and there is very likely GDPR issues here.
