Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

I think it's fine to have all these cameras, it isn't creepy - you've been burgled and I'm wondering if some pp don't know what that feels like. But the nanny definitely needs to be able to switch on/off herself when she wants.

Yes I have.

Filming/recording indoors all day just in case someone breaks in and you manage to catch footage of them on the indoor cameras even though they would have passed the outdoor ones, is (imo) creepy.

Outside fair enough inside nope and it can be breaking the law if on and someone working for you doesn't want them on

Unfortunately that is incorrect.

krakenworst · 08/10/2023 14:31

Oh and we do have indoor cameras which are part of our security system.

if external cameras or internal motion sensors are triggered ( when alarm on/ house is empty) then we or the monitoring company review indoor camera footage to check that there are intruders in the house before we/they call the police.

D20 · 08/10/2023 14:31

Creepy and controlling! I wouldn’t want to have cameras in my home.

jays · 08/10/2023 14:31

No they don’t. Genuinely if I was the nanny I’d be looking for a new job as I’d he very uncomfortable.

AutumnNanny · 08/10/2023 14:32

No, not inside they don't.

I wouldn't work for someone using cameras I couldn't switch on & off myself.

I hear what you say about it being for burglary, but it's a gross evasion of my privacy & I won't do it.

it's not because I'm doing anything wrong, but I don't want my constant chatter, tuneless singing & the moments where the baby/toddler pulls my top up/down recorded for you & anyone else to view.

I've been with the same family for 10 years now, but also with lots of families when my 'family' is away or weekends etc.

if it's only a short job (day or two) I don't say anything, but it definitely affects the interaction with the children.

children have outgrown a need for a nanny, so I'll be looking for a new job next year. It will be in my contract as will whatever I can
put in place for secretly putting cameras in.

there are plenty of nannies out there, they can choose another if they don't like it!!

AutumnFroglets · 08/10/2023 14:32

Having outdoor cameras fixed on points of entry is fine.

Having them indoors is just weird, unless you are Tamara Ecclestone type wealth. Show the nanny where the on/off switch is so she has control for when she's inside. But it's still weird.

OhmygodDont · 08/10/2023 14:33

We do have indoor cameras. However they are only on when we go on holiday/away away.

Could you show her where they plugged in so she can turn them off at her leisure.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/10/2023 14:35

No it's as creepy as fuck having indoor cameras. Totally unnecessary. I don't know anybody who has these. If I were the nanny, id be looking for alternative employment. I presume you tell anybody visiting your hike that they are being filmed? To add, cameras won't prevent a determined burglar.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/10/2023 14:37

Home not hike 🙄

skilpadde · 08/10/2023 14:37

Having indoor cameras is immensely creepy.

In your nanny's shoes, I'd be looking for a new job pronto, especially in light of your reaction to the justified objection.

UniversalTruth · 08/10/2023 14:37

@camerawomana I was told by a security installer that once the burglar is inside, you've lost, so cameras and other deterrents are only any good outside.

We have some external cameras covering our patio doors and I feel weird enough that it occasionally catches us if we go outside after dark (start time setting on the system) so if I were employed by you I would have a big problem with that.

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 08/10/2023 14:38

I don't think it's strange. Where I work has CCTV, I would have thought most workplaces do? If she doesn't want tonwork where there are cameras, that's fine, she can go and work somewhere that doesn't have CCTV.

So I'll tell her how to switch on and off.

If she wants to look for another job anyway, she can do so. I'm trying to gently get rid of her anyway. And no, I won't be hiring a new nanny, so this won't be an issue again. I'll keep the cameras because I feel safer having them.

I don't know anyone with cameras inside or outside their house apart from my next door neightbour who has CCTV outside.

In fact I barely know anyone with an alarm but I live in an area with a very low crime rate. I can understand having cameras outside as a deterrant but once they're inside surely its too late?

The point here is you feel safer - not you are safer.

Cameras inside won't do anything. They are as much use as a blanket over your head but a lot more expensive. And they give an illusion of better security which means you might miss the more sensible precautions- good locks, security lights etc...

How are they going to make you safe?

So some little scroat with a mask and his hood up, is going to get inside your house, see the cameras and run away? 🤦‍♀️

At the very very most, if the police attend your house after the burglary, they might or might not recognise his eyebrows.

DM has cameras inside- this is because she falls. They’re in certain areas, entries/exits pretty much. So I can see her moving around, but they aren’t pointed at where she is sitting, obviously not in her bathrooms/loos/bedroom. Not recorded as far as I know DH set it them up not me. Just allows me to check on her if I can’t get hold of her. I don’t sit around staring at her!

Work colleagues also have interior cameras for pets. They live alone…

Having a camera wouldn’t put me off personally, I thought most people videod nannies these days😕 I’m sure I’ve seen posts on here in the past… or cleaners for that matter.

I thought so too actually. Nanny babysits for familiars and has mentioned they have cameras.

A friend of mine has cameras as well and has a nanny too.

But I guess MN has told us the answer that most people find it unacceptable and weird. Fair enough.

No, most people aren't living in an indoor panopticon.

PunjabiGirl · 08/10/2023 14:54

I'm sorry I'd find indoor cameras creepy the. I wouldn't work in a home with cctv inside.

SpaceXStarship · 08/10/2023 14:55

I’m a nanny. One family I worked for had a ring camera in their kitchen and living room which is where the family spent the most time. We played in their bedroom a lot because I was not being checked up on through cameras.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/10/2023 14:55

Are you trying to make conditions so intolerable that the nanny resigns? Because I think that might be dodgy in employment law terms.

mynameiscalypso · 08/10/2023 14:56

Cameras are one of the biggest targets of cyber attacks.

No. The cameras have nothing to do with her and like I said, she can switch them off. I was just trying to make a point that her resigning isn't a worry for me. And getting a new nanny isn't a worry either.

Putting cameras up after a burglary and allowing her to control these is hardly pushing her out.
