I have cameras inside and outside my house because of a burglary - AIU re nanny ?

Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

Only in the kitchen at night so i can check on the dogs. Certainly nowhere else inside.

NurseryNurse10 · 08/10/2023 18:40

I nanny adhoc and expect there to be cameras in the home. It's not comfortable to me but it's what parents want.

OhmygodDont · 08/10/2023 18:44

I think most homes that have some kind of career be that a nanny or an elderly career going into have cameras. Just you don’t get told about them or can see them. Least ops you can see/she has informed.

Look at all the elderly abuse caught on covert cameras. You should basically expect that you may be recorded when working in a house. That abuse caught also shows why those not in a position to verbally explain issues need these cameras to keep them safe.

How old are your kids, OP?

We have indoor cameras (we got them to monitor indoor pets, but now they also cover the entry points of the house - and the washing machine so I can see how long is left 😂). We don’t access them if we have a guest or housesitter and would ABSOLUTELY turn them off if we had a trusted individual in the house who didn’t like them, and would show them how to disconnect them themselves to give them the comfort that we couldn’t watch them.

‘We have indoor cameras
….and the washing machine so I can see how long is left’

This kind of thing makes me think that human beings are just crazy. We think that tech is making our lives easier and better, when it’s actually making life so much more complicated and exhausting.

redribbonrose · 08/10/2023 19:17

No we don't have cameras

But we don't have a nanny or a house that is likely to he burgled either

GetDownkeith · 08/10/2023 19:30

I work in an industry that supplies fits and looks after security systems both domestic and commercial I can honestly say that cameras inside domestic premises are not that usual at all. I find it utterly bizarre that you know so many people that have cameras inside because it's really isn't the norm.

But the average homeowner isn't likely to pay for professionals to install professional kit like you'll be selling. They're more likely to buy nanny cams or webcams off Amazon, so you'll have no knowledge/experience of all those, will you?

I have a camera in some parts and our nanny is fine with this.

But it does make my life easier? Instead of going upstairs to see how long is left on the timer, I just check my camera app…

A very first world solution to a first world problem, admittedly 😂

This has to be a wind up...... absolutely not normal in your own home...... outside at a push, yes.... inside no.....

Dunnoburt · 08/10/2023 19:54

Unless you're entering the bb House?...... which was done to death about 20 years ago.....

Jokes aside, I think big brother is actually back on TV now ! It's restated. I read an article about it yesterday. It's either already restarted or it restarts tonight !

I’m trying to gently get rid of her.

That just means that she has ' soft notice ' that if she finds something else, she can go. Because I don't want to leave her without a job. The camera thing has nothing to do with that. I'm not trying to make her leave. I only mentioned this because everyone was saying how shit I am and that they'd leave me high and dry if they were my nanny. I'm fine if she leaves me high and dry. But I won't leave her high and dry. There aren't that many nanny jobs where we live.

This isn’t what you said in your post. Supporting her to find another job is different than ‘getting rid’ (gently or not).

The whole camera thing indoors when you have a nanny is just creepy. Using cameras to watch your children and step in when needed is also odd (but cheaper than a nanny).

If this is the norm for your social circle you must mix with very different people than the rest of us.

Jessforless · 08/10/2023 20:15

Well clearly not a wind up. A few people including me have said that we have them for various reasons. Mine being the dog and to keep an eye on the cats feeder not being knocked over etc if I’m out. That’s just good sense.

What do you do if you see that the cat feeder is knocked over? Do you have to rush home, do you watch while you're working assuming you work outside the home, does it not restrict your life

No one I know has cameras outside let alone inside the house.

It's weird and stalky to have them inside.

I'd hate to live in such a high crime area

no bird watchers, hedgehog watchers, pet owners?

this, how would you know? I bought all mine online and set them up myself.

my tort has to be indoors sometimes at the beginning and end of the summer. she is BIG so has the run of a whole spare bedroom. I keep cameras in there for the same reason. I can keep an eye on here without running up and downstairs. I also have one trained on the thermometer in her room so I can keep an eye on the temperature.

Cascais · 08/10/2023 21:55

No

KickHimInTheCrotch · 08/10/2023 22:13

What a world we live in. I barely lock my doors here. I don't think I'd want to live somewhere where having cameras inside and outside your house was normal.

That's totally different. My 8 year old son has a trail cam that he sets up at the bottom of the garden to record wildlife. It's not monitoring anyone's comings and goings. He's a mini Chris Packham!

PeloMom · 08/10/2023 22:26

@GetDownkeith we bought ours from the store (nest cameras) as didn’t need anyone to install them
