Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

I wouldn't visit someone if I knew they were filming inside.

CCTV out and about is one thing, in somewhere "private"...? Fuck that. I stopped delivering parcels to my neighbours when they got a ring doorbell - I loathe them.

Im not surprised the nanny doesn't like them. It would be like you were spying on her.

No one is filming you. It's not about you. It's just a camera in a room. It records everything, it's not going after just you and filing you. Everyone I have told said ' finally '. I must just know very different people to the average mumsnetter !

Of course it would be filming individuals that’s the whole idea.

cameras pointed at entry points and entry points only is one thing but cameras being used to see every aspect of life is the house makes me - and many others - uncomfy.

if it is filming "everything" then of course it's filming the person. 🙄

Ok first of all.. cameras inside in the house are just really creepy . Pretty much everyone I know has a ring doorbell now and outside cameras but I've never heard of anyone putting cameras inside.
Having said that. You're not happy with your nanny, that's really clear. It's a really key role in your life so I would just fire the nanny asap and find someone else and then ditch the creepy cameras.

mondaytosunday · 08/10/2023 16:40

Nope I would not do this and don't know anyone who has. In fact there are a few Ring doorbells in my neighbourhood but I don't know anyone personally who has even one of those.

NoNoHellaNoNoHellaNoNo · 08/10/2023 16:42

I know one person who has an internal camera in his living room. I’m not aware of anyone else who has them, and I don’t have any myself, inside or outside, nor do I really have any desire to get them.

I don’t see a huge problem with it as long as you’re transparent about it, so people can make their own choice about whether to come into your home or not.

Loopytiles · 08/10/2023 16:42

when you advertise for a new nanny, state clearly that there are cameras in the house. Doubt many will apply.

I'm literally constantly under CCTV in my office. Cameras are everywhere on every corner, wherever you go too.

You clearly live in a very different world to me and my circle, I don't know of anyone who has indoor cameras and my day to day life doesn't involve cameras on every corner. There isn't a single camera in the village I live in and none at my work

Obviously there are ring doorbells and outside house cameras but indoor cameras and watching your children from a different room seems really odd to me

PinkRoses1245 · 08/10/2023 16:47

It’s not normal at all, and no way I’d work there as your nanny, I don’t know anyone with cameras apart from Ring doorbell or similar. How will it stop you getting burgled?

Abitslow · 08/10/2023 16:47

Id be thinking why the nanny dont want YOU to have cameras on when shes in
YOUR home.

I wish i had cameras in my home years ago because of my very light fingered mother . ( no contact now for years had enough)
We all new what she was like but no proof just small things like £2 in change or a box of tea or letters photos etc would go missing and end up in her home .

Or the time my ex would shove and push around me i had no proof he was doing it.

And to be honest ive been thinking of doing the same getting my home kitted out if anyone as a problem with it dont come over.

Badbadbunny · 08/10/2023 16:47

Not unusual at all. I have a few cameras at home on window sills, they can be controlled remotely to point inside or outside, and they can be turned off, either remotely, or by simply unplugging them from the mains.

Not had unsupervised workers in the house, I always make sure I'm in to keep an eye on them, so mostly use them when we're away or to record the front door and front/back gardens in case of opportune thieves, etc.

Also had them going when we have workmen outside, such as the guys felling a neighbour's tree who let limbs fall and damage our fence - they denied it was them until we showed them the camera footage and then they had no option but to pay for the damage they caused! That alone paid for the cameras as we'd have had to pay ourselves if we'd not had evidence!

EyeEyeIIow · 08/10/2023 16:49

Ex spied on nanny here.

Whilst I agree with you wanting to feel safe in your home, I do feel you are going about it the wrong way.

Having cameras inside shows you categorically do not trust your employee, whether you mean to send this message to him/her or not.

Relationships will break down in time and s/he will gradually resent being in your house. My previous employer told me she was never watching or recording but as soon as the tiniest verbal slips happened that indicated she had, it was a one-way trip to me leaving.

Saying they’re not recording just doesn’t cut it at times.

The fact that she said she could trust me to then watch me against her own words is damaging. She ended up having therapy. A neutral person said she was lonely.

Timeisallwehave · 08/10/2023 16:54

Normal for us. Inside and out, nanny’s have never had a problem with it. Mostly in areas the children play to make for optimum eyes on when they aren’t in view and at night.

Somanycats · 08/10/2023 16:54

I don't think lots of people even realise they have an inside camera. Even an echo show has a cam. Any old echo allows you to listen in remotely. Anyone could log into their laptop cam from outside the house if they had a mind to. Any old baby monitor, you can get the screen up on your phone. Plus of course op as you correctly say lots of people have dedicated cams. I think the nanny would have to presume that more or less any household she might work in could do this.

Jessforless · 08/10/2023 16:56

I have cameras inside my house for when we need to leave the dog a couple of hours, but they’re free standing battery ring ones that you can just turn to face the wall when you get back in. Would something like this work as a compromise?

SacAMain · 08/10/2023 16:57

I have indoors cameras, it's not a big deal, at least half of my friends have them.

I can understand a nanny not wanted to be recorded, but she should at least understand that it's not about her.

Showing her how to switch them off is the best move really.

diamondpony80 · 08/10/2023 16:57

Outside of course, but inside? Never, and I don't know anyone with inside cameras. I really don't see how they help with security.

ReadtheReviews · 08/10/2023 16:59

The only way I'd have a stranger looking after my non verbal age children would be with cameras tbh.

Winnading · 08/10/2023 17:00

jlpth · 08/10/2023 14:27

I think it's fine to have all these cameras, it isn't creepy - you've been burgled and I'm wondering if some pp don't know what that feels like. But the nanny definitely needs to be able to switch on/off herself when she wants.

Even burgled a few times, once when I was in the house. Terrifying. Still dont want cameras inside.
Cameras dont catch thieves, all they do is cover their faces and wear gloves. And by the time the police come to look at your footage of covered faces it's far too late. That's even if they come out. Theres been a few burglaries locally recently and not one police officer showed up.

Throwingpots · 08/10/2023 17:01

Can’t say I know anyone with cameras in the house, know many households. All sounds a bit Alex Rider 😂

Miyagi99 · 08/10/2023 17:01

PinkChampange · 08/10/2023 15:35

I'd be wondering why she's not happy.

If she has nothing to hide it shouldn't be a problem

Maybe she might want to pass wind at some point, pick her knickers out of her arse, scratch a nipple. Loads of things you’d do in a house but not in public. Doesn’t mean they’re dodgy.

RedToothBrush · 08/10/2023 17:03

No.

I am pissed at the neighbours' surveillance of me me.
I refuse to have CCTV
And I certainly wouldn't have it inside my house.

It's wrong.

I also don't believe in tracking apps for your kids.

mydogspooeybum · 08/10/2023 17:04

Why do you need cameras inside your house when you already have them outside? It seems a bit pointless to me, unless you want to spy on the people inside?

We were broken into a few years ago and immediately got cameras outside, covering all angles, but not for a second did we consider getting them inside.

theresnolimits · 08/10/2023 17:04

What madness is this? Inside cameras? And what for? If you are burgled, it won’t stop anyone. They’re in.

And the police won’t be interested. They wouldn’t even come out when we called 999. Just gave a crime number.

When I was defrauded in a shop and offered the details of the assistant, they didn’t want to know. it’s like shoplifters.

I don’t know anyone who had this and can’t see what purpose it serves.

Snittler · 08/10/2023 17:05

We have indoor cameras (we got them to monitor indoor pets, but now they also cover the entry points of the house - and the washing machine so I can see how long is left 😂). We don’t access them if we have a guest or housesitter and would ABSOLUTELY turn them off if we had a trusted individual in the house who didn’t like them, and would show them how to disconnect them themselves to give them the comfort that we couldn’t watch them.
