Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

No I will never have cameras to record people and dress it up as security

Safariplease · 08/10/2023 23:01

Very normal to have cameras imo - I think everyone I know does. Mainly for pets!

@GetDownkeith we bought ours from the store (nest cameras) as didn’t need anyone to install them

Similar.

My husband bought a number of wireless ones and put them up, at the beginning of Covid when he had time on his hands, after a number of soft burglaries, car tampering etc. in our very busy urban setting..

Where I live (not the UK), nanny cams are completely the norm. They’re there specifically so that nannies to babies and small children are watched, at an age where the children speak for themselves. The nanny “market” is completely accepting of this.

I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Yet another instance of my Britishness setting me apart.

Also, if they relay images over wifi (which they all do - these aren’t closed-circuit cameras) they’re absolutely vulnerable to hacking. There have been two instances of this in my circle in the past 12 years. This alone is reason enough not to have them.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 08/10/2023 23:28

Could be classed as covert monitoring of an employee which is very very frowned upon, probably illegal.

TiredMum30 · 08/10/2023 23:28

I have a camera in the living room, but it's pointed at the dogs crate, she sometimes barks while we're out at work and if she doesn't settle after a short while then my mum pops round to see to her.

I work as a cleaner and I've had 2 houses with cameras in their homes, 1 was to keep an eye on their dog while out but it was only in the room the dog sleeps and the second house I actually have no idea what it was for so it creeped me out a little in all honesty, I left that clean a short while after, not just because of the camera although it did contribute to my choice to leave.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 09/10/2023 06:49

Can someone actually tell me how inside cameras improve security and help prevent burglary?

TeaAndTattoos · 09/10/2023 06:58

YANBU I have a camera inside my house I only have it because I have pets and while I’m out I like to check on them I leave it running 24/7 my husband and I don’t even notice the camera. I would really one outside too.

DitheringBlidiot · 09/10/2023 06:59

We have one indoor camera for the dog. It only points at the room the dog is in, and we only turn it on when we go out.

Much as I hate the idea of cameras inside, it's hardly "covert monitoring" when the nanny has been be told and the OP says she can turn them off.

Only vulnerable if you use the stock cheap equipment that your broadband provider provides. If people are so bothered about hacking, why do non of you invest in decent routers etc. and stop relying on that cheap stuff your providers give out for free, answer is that its a lame excuse otherwise you would have already invested in decent cyber security at home.

no bird watchers, hedgehog watchers, pet owners?

Pet owners yes, I'm one.

Still no need for cameras though

not biased by any chance?

billyt · 09/10/2023 10:06

I work in the Electronic Security industry, designing Security systems The one place I've never installed cameras is inside a residential property. No matter who lives there.

Commercial/Retail properties I can understand but your home?

Once the bastards are inside it's too late. No experienced thief will break in without their face/head covered. External cameras are more to catch where/what they do because someone with a head cover is technically 'invisible'.

External cameras/detection and a good Intruder Alarm - yes.

Sounds like you are a saleman's wet dream

No - I don't think that most people have cameras recording within their house.

saraclara · 09/10/2023 10:18

I wouldn't even want to visit a friend who had cameras in their living room. And I absolutely would not be in that house alone, knowing that I could be watched the whole time.

What the heck do you do in your friends house that would cause such an over-reaction?

Dotjones · 12/10/2023 11:27

It's normal to have cameras in the house I don't see why people think it's odd at all. As long as you secure them properly and they are controlled by you alone there's nothing wrong with it.

With regard to the point PP made about them being pointless "because even if you see a robbery in progress, by the time the cops turn up they'll have scarpered" that misses a very important point: notifying the police promptly at least enables the site to be secured and will deter further opportunist robbers. It's not uncommon for a house to be turned over, then before the owner returns an opportunist comes along, sees the door kicked in and comes in to help themselves to whatever the original scumbags didn't take.

It's fine for the nanny to not to want to work in a place where they may be recorded of course, it's their choice to withdraw their labour, but the homeowner has the right to install them if they wish.

felisha54 · 12/10/2023 11:40

I have cameras at all my external doorways and drive but I wouldn't have them inside.

Dbank · 12/10/2023 11:40

Ladyj84 · 08/10/2023 14:29

Outside fair enough inside nope and it can be breaking the law if on and someone working for you doesn't want them on

How would this be breaking the law?

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/10/2023 11:44

The only people I know with cameras inside the house are my increasingly paranoid parents.

My dad seems to be under the impression that a burglar would want to break in and steal his very old computer. He's probably spent more on the CCTV than the computer is worth.

I would feel very very uncomfortable sitting in a friend's lounge knowing that they were filming me.

BoxOfCats · 12/10/2023 11:46

I have them inside the house - mainly to spy on the cats while I'm at work Smile

Dbank · 12/10/2023 11:48

If you think it's worth keeping her happy, then turn them off when she's there, if there's a simple way to do it.

Personally I wouldn't, I would say my house my rules, and make it clear you have internal cameras to your next cleaner.
