I have cameras inside and outside my house because of a burglary - AIU re nanny ?

Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

This is for a business.

JustKen · 08/10/2023 16:05

If you have CCTV coverage on the exterior of your house, you will capture images of intruders anyway, so having them inside the house is excessive imo.

CaptainHammer · 08/10/2023 16:06

I work in care and the majority of clients have cameras in their homes now. It did feel strange at first but you soon get used to it. If you’re happy for her to turn them off while she’s there then I can’t see her problem.

Brokendaughter · 08/10/2023 16:07

I have cameras in the kitchen, living areas & halls, but not in bedrooms or bathrooms.

They are on at night, if any workmen are in the building (I've had issues with some of their behaviour in the past), or if I'm away.

If I didn't trust a nanny enough to let her in without a camera on her at all times, I'm not sure I'd trust her enough to be a nanny to my child.
Same deal with a cleaner.

Surely it's a place of business if you are employed there . Irish law would recognise it as so. Perhaps UK is behind in the EU updates post Brexit.

Incorrect. Data protection is only for businesses….

we don’t have the same filing laws in public to private too

for example in public you have zero right to privacy…..

‘ I have them on when we are home and don't see an issue for us tbh.’

Can you really not see the difference between you being filmed and you having access to the tapes, compared to you using your cameras to spy on your nanny and her phone use?!

I don’t know anyone with internal
cameras. But I am a bit older maybe as I am in my fifties and perhaps less paranoid than people seem to be nowadays.

She’s said about 8 times she’ll teach the nanny how to turn them off herself. She’s not spying on her or her phone use.

PeloMom · 08/10/2023 16:09

We do have cameras inside ( living area, playroom, kid room) and outside

Bleuuuughhh · 08/10/2023 16:09

When we moved into our new house there was ctv everywhere. Instead of it making us feel more safe, it made us more paranoid. What looks like a bad man lurking in the bushes, is fact a bloke tying his shoelace. Plus, didn’t want to watch husband scratching his arse in another room…

KnutonHardz · 08/10/2023 16:10

I've installed cameras in my DF's home, yard area and near sheds, I'm currently living back home his farm) I've had to do that as a result of equipment theft, and the premises having been "scoped". I'm fairly certain I know the people involved, and the cameras are a preventative measure.

We do have some nurse(s) and a more general house-help here several times a week. I've explained and showed them camera systems. They have never expressed concern, at least directly to me.

ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere · 08/10/2023 16:11

I have cameras in and out - mainly to check in on the cats if I go away for the weekend.

Not full coverage, but in the kids playroom, in my bedroom (that one only turned on when we're away) and in the kitchen.

Plus a camera in the chicken coop

I've mentioned it to babysitters/my parents when they're staying and no-one's been bothered, but I'd be happy for them to put little hats on the indoor ones or unplug them while they're there if they did.

PeloMom · 08/10/2023 16:11

To add: we’ve had a few Nannie’s and none has had issues with the cameras - we do disclose at interview stage and are very clear where the cameras are.

Sumtimesiamgreen · 08/10/2023 16:12

After I was burglarised I got outside cctv.
Not even considered inside, however someone I know did get cctv inside. Weird AF and I stopped going round.
If you must keep them you will need to show nanny how to turn them off. It’s right weird.

saythatagaintome · 08/10/2023 16:13

OP that’s incredibly paranoid of you.

OldTinHat · 08/10/2023 16:15

@EmmaEmerald I have psychosis. I hear and see things that aren't real and, since my dog died who would alert me to any threats, the internal cameras give me security in that I can check if noises or people I hear/see via the cameras are actual threats or part of my illness.

I was more amused that she couldn’t see why a nanny would be bothered, when she as the camera-owner was oh-so chilled about the cameras.

Marblessolveeverything · 08/10/2023 16:20

Can't imagine living like that. Glad it isn't the norm here. The idea you would never have total privacy in your own home is mind boggling to me. Certainly kill any spontaneity, the idea of hang on a sec so I can turn off the cameras or worse forgetting and it being out in the ether , eh nope for me.

therealcookiemonster · 08/10/2023 16:22

@camerawomana not sure why the uproar. I have cameras and motion sensors everywhere - inside and outside (obv not bathrooms etc). I inform everyone who visits my house of this, including my housekeepers. tbh they are very happy to have the cameras because they know if anything breaks/is lost I am not going to throw around false accusations. it also helps them ask me questions when I am not home eg. which cupboard to take stuff from etc.

but mainly I have it for my own security living by myself and convenience (I can check if I've switched lights off, what is that noise etc. without going to the other end of the house or when i am out).

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 08/10/2023 16:24

I would be very uncomfortable being in someone’s home and they were filming me. Definitely not the norm with people I know.

You're assuming someone is constantly watching. I don't even think about the cameras. Out of the millions of cameras they're going to hack mine ? What are they gone see anyway ? Me cooking ? Cleaning ? My kids playing ? I don't do anything I wouldn't want someone to see in communal areas anyway ! I don't walk around naked etc. I only change in my bedroom and there are no cameras there. I think any footage of me and my family would be way too boring for anyone to care about.

No one is filming you. It's not about you. It's just a camera in a room. It records everything, it's not going after just you and filing you. Everyone I have told said ' finally '. I must just know very different people to the average mumsnetter !

I'm literally constantly under CCTV in my office. Cameras are everywhere on every corner, wherever you go too.

I know a couple of people with a ring doorbell type thing at their front door but I don’t know anyone with cameras inside. There are cameras on the car park at work but none inside. I never used cameras to keep my children safe …. keeping them safe was my job!

kiddosbedtimealready · 08/10/2023 16:30

This may have GDPR consequences for you as your nanny is an employee. She would have subject access rights over the internal footage in which she appears. If she leaves, you would have to tell anyone new coming in that you have CCTV inside your house, which is what it is. I would get rid of the internal cameras.

I don't want a new nanny anyway and I have no problem telling anyone that comes in that I have cameras. So we are good.

Happy to cover them while she's there but I want them on when there is no one in the house. I have them on when we are home and don't see an issue for us tbh. Fair enough if she doesn't want them on but otherwise they're on for security.

Why? The camera outside would alert you to a burglary.
