Just noseying on Rightmove - how did any of this get past building regs? I thought the lack of handrail on the stairs was bad enough until I saw the landing!

Carpets in seizure patterns... nope

No handrails, is just strange and makes it look unfinished.

I have floaty stairs but they have the glass like panels with handrail on top. Same with the balconies.

BeignetPommes · 01/10/2023 23:54

I’d have to crawl up the stairs and across the landing on my hands and knees

Exactly my thought! Like being cragfast

Caerulea · 01/10/2023 23:58

Legitimately furious about that carpet. I need to know who I write a letter to about it.

Bobbielikespeas · 01/10/2023 23:58

I like how there's an old car parked on the drive, prob from when the house was built... 👀

Sugarfree23 · 02/10/2023 00:01

It has to have had a balustrade before it was signed off. Someone has later removed them, possibly thinking the looked ugly.
The laws are there because people have been killed falling from open stairs and landing.

LeafLife · 02/10/2023 00:02

It looks like a spoiler alert for my nightmares tonight!

Quite terrifying.

Same! I just said to DH I would need to cross the landing like a crocodile 😂

You could add a bannister to the stairwell and it would look ok and make it less of a accident waiting to happen.

But those mad floating deathtrap upper corridors? It would look super weird if you added hand rails to those or even glass screens. What do you do with them?!

And the one on the opposite side of the stairs has a handy-dandy window to crash through if you fall off that side.

They probably describe that feature as "easy outside access". 😉

jenpil · 02/10/2023 00:08

I notice the house is located near Altrincham.

Did it once belong to an elderly footballers wife wannabe? 😂

Are you sure the upper landing at the top of the stairs doesn't have a glass bannister? I think it looks like it may have. I know a couple who have people over all the time with un- bannistered stairs and they seem OK ( they don't have children obviously!)

Neither open area has anything. There would be an anchor for even a glass panel near the stairs and at some point around the window area that is open across from the stairs. Ditto, nothing off the bedroom balcony to stop one from getting to the driveway fast as can be.

Did your concerns prevent you from going ahead with the purchase OP ?

OldTinHat · 02/10/2023 00:13

The carpet. The tiles. My eyes!!!!!

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 02/10/2023 00:14

I think it’s super cool! Needs some (ahem) new carpets and less metreage of curtain fabric, but I love the stairs, landing and shape!

Grumpusaurus · 02/10/2023 00:21

They might have originally had balustrades but later removed them. Horrendous fuggly interiors and bathrooms. Nothing a sledgehammer and wallpaper stripper could not fix.

SemperIdem · 02/10/2023 00:22

Can’t quite get my head around that set up.

Why is it that the vaguely to extremely monied seem to have less self preservation skills than the norm?

Stairs and landings with no railings, a submarine minivan? So much money, so much will to risk your life for no reason.

WoollyBat · 02/10/2023 00:23

Another one who has weird dreams about houses like this! Scary stairs and landings that you can fall off or that don’t connect properly, or that get too thin or have gaps. Does anyone know what dysfunctional house/staircase dreams are supposed to mean?

pollyglot · 02/10/2023 00:24

Talk about the epitome of bad taste...utterly, completely hideous.

You have to admire that beautifully mown lawn though, don't you………

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/10/2023 00:38

Looking at the architect's site linked earlier, they still seem to like placing bidets miles from the loo. A minor oddity, in the context of so many more bizarre decisions, but telling about their views on practicality.
