Just noseying on Rightmove - how did any of this get past building regs? I thought the lack of handrail on the stairs was bad enough until I saw the landing!

I've seen a similar lack of banister in a house where the owner needed a lift for a wheelchair. In this case it might not be worth providing one, because the seller wouldn't know which initials to put on the gold-plated balustrade.

Is that a camera in #32?

Spotlight. The fisheye makes it look a different size to the other two, but if you look at pic 33, you’ll see it’s actually the same size.

BlippiIsAnnoying · 02/10/2023 01:08

Just needs Jack Nicholson roaming around with an axe to finish it off.

TakenUpTheOxoTower · 02/10/2023 01:11

That landing is giving me a weird zingy feelings in my legs… I would feel drawn to the edge of it, if I was there!😱
The stairs not so bad, as I’d cling to the walls… but it all seems optically wonky…
The carpets are very “ Marlene and Boycie” and it all seems show-offy.
Not for me, thanks, I think there’s a funny vibe going on…

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/10/2023 01:12

The white things in pic 32? They're lights.

Hope not! Most UNsuitable for anyone frail and/or elderly.

ilovemyspace · 02/10/2023 01:15

Going by the comments, this says so much more about the people who post on AIBU than about the house itself!

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 02/10/2023 01:24

The agent is going to be extremely confused as to why there’s a peek in views of the listing and no actual viewing conversion.

The landing reminded me of the local cinema in the late 80’s minus the open mezzanine. I’m sure it would be great with neutral carpets and a few added safety features.

echt · 02/10/2023 01:41

It's as if the joiners just walked out without finishing the job and the owners thought fuckit and stubbornly refused to employ anyone else to finish, and the ensuing lawsuit dragged on and on like Jarndyce v. Jarndyce in "Bleak House".

Lachimolala · 02/10/2023 01:48

One glass too many of rose and I’d be brown bread 😂 I’d walk straight off the landing.

Imagine tripping on the stairs!

I don't see a camera but what made me laugh too hard is the roof beam that goes down and through the closet on the left.

Yet, it also fits with the "open floor" plan.

That they are sane and have good taste? Yeah, I get that too. 😉

I havent RTWT but my brain immediately went to The Shining. What a hideous house

and yes dodgy stairs.

Plus raised bath next to a window

FarmGirl78 · 02/10/2023 02:28

I have very similar stairs, except mine are open tred so there's no riser bit. I'm used to them now, never fell once in 10 years. Previous house with carpet on the stairs I slipped down twice in only 6 months. Mine are allowed because they were there BEFORE building regs were ever a thing. I could get a brand new stairscase that was open tred with no bannister and because it's a replacement that would be fine. But you couldn't put stairs like that into a new house, or to replace ones which previously had a bannister.

But that landing - just NOPE!!

The one you'd choose if you really disliked your relatives and you'd hope they might have a little accident.....

SmokedCheese · 02/10/2023 05:28

I look at it and see great potential, the shapes of the rooms and windows are pleasing. Gut the inside and make the exterior woodwork black, it could be quite something

Poppysmom22 · 02/10/2023 06:10

Yeah that's a recipe for disaster

thefirstmrsrochester · 01/10/2023 22:05

I’d have to crawl up the stairs and across the landing on my hands and knees.

Quite terrifying.

This! First job would installing balustrade go up the stairs and all around the landing!

I like the house though - the size of the bedrooms!

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 02/10/2023 07:01

@SmokedCheese glad I’m not the only one who actually does like it. Or what it could be.

ErmWhatever · 02/10/2023 07:22

I find the decor oddly comforting. It's like my nans house on steroids. It's just missing some dusty knick-knacks and carpet in the bathroom.

Those stairs would make a wonderfully dramatic death scene in an 80's-esque whodunnit.

MyCircumference · 02/10/2023 07:25

terrible and that carpet is atrocious

TheSpikySpinosaurus · 02/10/2023 08:03

Bloody hell. Stairs and landing are illegal. See eg www.fastbuildsupplies.co.uk/knowledge-hub/guide-domestic-stairs-uk-building-regulations-part-k/

How did the owners get them past building regs?

And the carpet, wallpaper and curtains are fugly. You'd need a customer-made carpet for that's size of house, and it would cost THOUSANDS. No thanks.

TheSpikySpinosaurus · 02/10/2023 08:09

And Rightmove doesn't mention any of the illegalities in its sales blurb. Odd.

A film production company should get in quick before the new owners renovate.

A full on period 80s period piece, starring....Suranne Jones as the housewife. Her cheating husband (owns a chain of provincial law firms) is found dead at the bottom of the stairs and the finger is pointed at her ...
