Just noseying on Rightmove - how did any of this get past building regs? I thought the lack of handrail on the stairs was bad enough until I saw the landing!

@MojoMoon I'd definitely watch that.

If it doesn't meet building regulations, you'd struggle to get a mortgage on it I would have thought? Or at least they'd withhold part of the money until you'd installed bannisters etc.

Angrymum22 · 02/10/2023 08:47

It’s right out of the 1980s when it comes to taste. Fancy drapes, patterned carpets, weird Greek columns and ragged walls all straight out of the 80s. Don’t judge too much no doubt mumsnetters will be making the same comments about the current taste in battleship grey in years to come. But the stairs!!

AlienatedChildGrown · 02/10/2023 08:54

The stairs look like shark’s teeth from the hallway, so at least you get fair warning.

My balance is crap so there’s no way I’d be walking up there. I like my legs unbroken and as few collywibbles as possible when going from ground to first floor.

Maybe there were rails to start with but some interior designer ripped them out to make A Statement ? Although you’d think they’d done enough statement making given the rest of the house.

Just needs Jack Nicholson roaming around with an axe to finish it off.

My first thought!! 😂

Beargrumps22 · 02/10/2023 08:58

looks like that house in the originall series of Birds of a Feather! all those swags but that carpet should never have left the factory!

purplepeace · 02/10/2023 09:12

love this estate agent blurb:

"whilst the interior has reached the stage where cosmetic improvements are required and therefore presents an ideal opportunity to remodel to individual taste."

I wonder if potential purchasers have to don safety harnesses and hard hats before going on a viewing? Grin

loislovesstewie · 02/10/2023 09:26

Why have they not installed a banister and some sort of railings for the landing? That can't have passed building regs , I can't get my head round that!

He popped in, said something about a shortage of axe-worthy doors and did for the balustrade.

TheFeistyFeminist · 02/10/2023 10:08

A quick google tells me that:

Three or more steps, or a drop of 900mm, must have a handrail

But if you are the owner occupier you are at liberty to remove the handrail at your own risk.

So surely for selling, they would have to reinstate?

You could put clear toughened glass along the walkway.

theresamooseloose · 02/10/2023 10:16

I’m afraid this is often the case with posts on here!

MaggieFS · 02/10/2023 10:25

Bedroom 4 is obviously the one for guests you wish weren't staying, because you have to cross the death trap drawbridge landing just to get to the loo from it.

WhatapityWapiti · 02/10/2023 10:57

It’s funny that the scale of everything else is enormous then they have chosen that space-saving garden furniture that packs into a cube for small patios!

All of the carpets in that house should be illegal.

I'd rip them up on the viewing, even if I had no intention of buying the house.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/10/2023 11:25

So many rooms, and only three of them rectangular.

WoollyBat · 02/10/2023 11:32

Robert glenister as the late hubby. She was already his younger 2nd wife but now he’s been having an affair with Carey mulligan.

WoollyBat · 02/10/2023 11:33

Oops that was to mojomoon!

openallday · 02/10/2023 11:34

The 1980s called. They want their carpet back

Omg! That funny patterned carpet makes you dizzy and that could easily result in a fall into the abyss

VoldemortsKitten · 02/10/2023 11:38

This bit is utterly terrifying, how can this have worked for anyone?!

openallday · 02/10/2023 11:38

This place would be a fantastic film set for a period piece

Barring the obvious death hazard that is the top floor

That bathroom! Dynasty vibes

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 02/10/2023 11:58

I suppose you could put a trampoline in the hallway to catch falling bodies.

wutheringkites · 02/10/2023 12:10

I guess this is one way of making sure you're never asked to have the grandkids overnight.

I have a gymnast/climber DS who would LOVE swinging down from the catwalk 🤣.

Actually, perhaps it is a retired firefighter and there used to be a pole to slide down?

YachtMistress · 02/10/2023 12:43

Jeez, that's a busy interior, 😎 and hazardous ......Parkour anyone?

ScentlessAprentice · 02/10/2023 12:51

Oh that staircase is making me feel pukey. And the carpets are potentially bringing on a seizure 😂

martinisforeveryone · 02/10/2023 12:58

That house has only one redeeming feature for me and that’s location, even the back garden’s claustrophobic. Any ‘landscaper’ must’ve been on the books of the architect. I was involved with house building in the early 90s and building control was red hot on staircase safety. Rectifying, remodelling and refitting the whole building and garden would be like a dog chasing its own tail and even then it’d have niche appeal.

As a PP said. It needs a developer. Preferably to demolish and rebuild with up to date standards and modern materials.
