To call my neighbour selfish

Fedupandgrumpy1 · 21/09/2023 19:36

We live in a quiet street with about 10 houses in. I have mobility issues and also struggle with my MH. It's important for me to have as much sleep as possible so I tend to go to bed at 10.30pm and don't get up until about 11am.

Very recently a family moved in next door. They have 3 children who are lovely and not a problem. But their mother annoys me and I feel she is being selfish. She works strange hours and most days leaves the house to go to work at 4.30am. She drives an old car and the doors creaks when she opens it. She then normally sits in the car with it running for 5 mins before driving off. The father is fine.

I have spoken to her and told her about my health issues and have asked her to consider changing her working hours, replace her car or to park her car in a road away from the house. She said she was sorry that she disturbs me but she cannot change her working hours due to the nature of her job. She said they can't afford to replace the car and as its an old car she has to warm it up before going anywhere. She admits the door creaks and said that oiling is didn't help. She is not willing to park away from home and she doesn't think its safe to walk on her own early in the morning with no streetlights.

She is making me more poorly. I am now having to sleep a bit in the afternoon due go being disturbed and as a result am missing out on me time.

What can I do about it? I'm fed up of her selfish behaviour.

Maybe you two could switch houses. She needs the isolation to get "enough" sleep and to have her "me time".
You would like a less isolated place and I bet the neighbors would love to have you.

This is an excellent idea.

Right now, despite it being daylight, there is a tawny owl flying over the field next door looking for mice, a seagull on the roof of my shed laughing at this and in a minute my tame pheasant will put his head through the hole in the door he made by tapping for food.

I'm getting too old to be safe in the countryside on my own but at least I'm not about to batter my neighbour.

I got up this morning and thought about the fact that a woman who can't afford a new car herself, thinks it's appropriate to ask another woman to buy herself a new car.

Fedupandgrumpy1 · 21/09/2023 19:47

I'm not sure what a reverse is but I am being serious. I don't choose to be poorly, but she can choose her job. I wouldn't go waking her up at 11pm as I know she gets up early and that would be unfair and I would appreciate the same consideration.

Only thing you can do is to move your sleeping pattern to match hers.

Clearly you cannot expect her to change jobs, park somewhere else or buy a new car

This! It sounds like you don't even work, so you can sleep any time. Get some bloody ear plugs.

Efacsen · 22/09/2023 09:42

Shhhhh everyone OPs trying to sleep............................

NuckingFightmare · 22/09/2023 09:48

@Fedupandgrumpy1 what do you do with your 'me time'? A nice bath or quiet jigsaw or do you watch tv or play music?
At what times do you do this?
Do you have any pets?
Just trying to consider the noise levels from your side.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 dying at that comment

Toddlerteaplease · 22/09/2023 10:00

So if the OP doesn't work, that's 24/7 'me time' that she has?

SomeCatFromJapan · 22/09/2023 10:01

This is hilarious. You literally want the neighbour to either change jobs, change cars or park miles from her house just so you can loaf about happily in bed all day long. And you think she's the selfish one.

JohnsonandTrumpSittingInATree · 22/09/2023 10:08

Omg you can’t be serious!! How selfish and entitled are you! I can’t even believe this is real

ManateeFair · 22/09/2023 10:10

Fedupandgrumpy1 · 21/09/2023 20:13

I don't have the money to buy her a new car. Mine is on the mobility scheme so I don't even have my own car but appreciate that the scheme helps me. I do know that I wouldn't be able to afford a car myself so I know its not easy, but she does work so should have some spare money.

"She works so she should have some spare money"

I suspect I'm replying to someone's creative writing exercise here, but I'll reply as if I believe it to be real: if you think she has spare money for a car just because she has a job, you are either mad or five years old.

Her life doesn't revolve around your health issues. You are being ridiculous.

Ididntknowuntiliknew · 22/09/2023 10:22

The neighbour may have other options to resolve OPs need for ‘me time’.
Could her family move house quickly and cheaply, given that she has a job.
Or possibly get rid of some of the kids, to reduce household costs. Then she could just get a little job on the checkout somewhere.
Thinking outside the box is OP’s responsibility ultimately.

Reigateforever · 22/09/2023 11:27

I do believe it is a reversed message, the neighbour who has written this.

Why would I get my neighbour to write my post for me?

A touch more understanding on the Op's side wouldnt go amiss, her neighbours leaving for work a 04.30 in the morning, in her old car with a creaky door, helping to pay the taxes that pay for her to lay in bed most of the day and pay for her brand new mobility car parked on her drive.
Absolute liberty to be fair.

That's a horrible comment.

Threads like this do those with disabilities no favours.

I have adult children living at home who I like watch tv with in the evenings. I have one black lab.

During the day I like to read.

We live in a small village in the Yorkshire Dales. My neighbour works on a farm a couple of miles away. I don't mind Countryside noise.

NuckingFightmare · 22/09/2023 12:30

Is the tv ever at a volume that may be heard through your neighbours wall?
Does your dog ever bark?
Just pointing out that this is usually normal household noise.
I mean, your neighbours could demand you throw out your tv and have your dog pts. After all, you choose to have them, right?
Can you see how unreasonable that would be?
Now put yourself in her shoes for a moment and take on board the suggestions on this thread.

Did you ask your adult children for an opinion before speaking to the neighbour?

I'm wondering what they said

SomeCatFromJapan · 22/09/2023 12:49

I'm sure your neighbour would love to have a life reading, lazing in bed and watching telly instead of getting up in the middle of the night to labour on a farm. Try being grateful.

Mulhollandmagoo · 22/09/2023 13:02

Flipping heck, you still don't get it do you @Fedupandgrumpy1???? 😦 This is getting painful now!

FarEast · 22/09/2023 13:26

And I agree with a PP upthread. It’s people who think like you who make it harder for really disabled people - many of whom still actually work for their living.

I think you need to get out and go some volunteer work. It might help you develop some empathy.

momtoboys · 22/09/2023 13:56

The fact the OP has not had this thread removed from sheer embarrassment clarifies that this is indeed a windup.
