"Cheeky" swimsuits. Just why?

disappearingfish · 21/09/2023 17:22

I get it for posing on the beach, but why do swimwear makers cut the bums off suits otherwise aimed at the "proper swimming" market. I do not want to see bare arses at 0630 under the bad lighting of my local council swimming.

This, for example. Who buys this? www.arenasport.com/en_uk/006660-women-s-swimsuit-arena-mesh-panels-power-back.html

Because they want to? Because being nude is quite freeing? I swim nude in a private beach spot I know. I’m alone, no one else sees me. I just enjoy it. You think all nudists who go to places together are doing it for the male gaze? Men and women of all ages go to nudist things and it’s often very respectful because it isn’t bloody sexual It’s part of Spanish culture and the men don’t stare like they would hear because it’s common and women of all ages, even the elderly, do it. I’m sorry for you that you can only assume that women do things for men, but not all of them do. Being naked, being topless isn’t all about bloody men. Maybe you have nudity issues but some women don’t. Stop sexualising everything.

Absolute nonsense that it’s part of Spanish culture, my mother was spat on for wearing a very conservative bikini on the beach in the ‘fifties. It’s part of international culture perhaps, and the Spanish have accepted it because of the number of foreign nationals who come to Spain with their own “cultures”. British woman behaving and dressing like slappers whilst on holiday in Spain have contributed to that.

I'm teetering on overweight, but my foof is morbidly obese, so I would have the same look on the front and the back. Bit like Cher in that Turn Back Time video but with much more flabbage.

😂
Bless you for that! You paint quite a picture!

Teddleshon · 23/09/2023 10:36

I thought topless sunbathing was now illegal in Spain.

Blueink · 23/09/2023 11:02

The OP is right that pools can be crowded, especially if you have to use it at peak times, you are tightly packed in swimming lanes with a close view of the person in front.

I don’t think it’s must of an ask for people’s arses to be covered by their costume, or at least not made a feature of by deliberate design.

DeclineandFall · 23/09/2023 12:25

I like the top of that swimsuit but I figure the money they spent on the top half had to be saved somewhere else so they left the arse off. It looks stupid- like they have a wedgie.
Best thing about these swimsuit threads is I am getting targeted by ads for q nice looking swimsuit with full bottom coverage. Bless the algorithms.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 23/09/2023 12:56

I don’t get it either. Fair enough on hols if you’re looking for an all over tan I guess but otherwise nope. Even in my young days when I had a nice pert peachy arse I was discerning in who I showed it to, Janet at aqua-aerobics and Clive in for his regular 20 lengths were not in that number

CatMadam · 23/09/2023 13:23

I’ve seen men in Speedos so tight you can literally see their foreskin, a wee bit of arse cheek seems tame in comparison imo

Emanresu9 · 23/09/2023 13:24

If it’s “just a bum, no big deal” why aren’t men wearing them?

ask yourself that.

disappearingfish · 23/09/2023 13:25

Why are you putting your nose mere inches away from someone's arse? I'd be asking to get you removed from the pool, I think that is highly inappropriate.

Scenario from last week. I am standing in the shallow end having just swum a length. I turn around to pick up my kick board just as a woman gets out. Her bare arse is about a foot away from my face, she is bent over because she is kneeling on the side before standing up. Another 1/2 cm of material less and I would have been able to see all the way up to her tonsils.

Just a point of clarification. I didn't start this thread saying "women who do x are ugly etc."

I started it to say that when in an environment that is focused on sport, fitness and wellness (the local pool) I don't want to see bare arses - any bare arses, male or female - inches away from my nose.

It's not a new or uncommon concept that certain clothes are appropriate or inappropriate for certain scenarios. I would never wear a "cheeky" swimsuit anyway, but I definitely wouldn't wear one where I might bump into old Mr Miggins from no.78, or Colin the IT guy from work.

The arses are not bare.

You mean some skin on her buttocks. That nano second (unless you decided not to turn away) must have been devastating for you. How dare this woman wear a revealing swimming costume in a place she has as much right to be as you have. Burn her.....burn them all, then hopefully you can get some peaceful butterfly in without the trauma of a few extra inches of skin.

Scoobydoobywho · 23/09/2023 14:22

I can't think why you wouldn't want a random persons arse cheeks sticking out of the water in front of you. It would be like a re-enactment of Jaws coming at you from below.

We're going to need a bigger boat...

It doesn't sound like you've seen Jaws, though, or like you go swimming very often. That's honestly not what it's like even if someone is wearing a thong swimsuit. You don't get a face full of bums when swimming. Well, not at my gym anyway. Maybe that's a perk for the Gold members.

YouveGotAFastCar · 21/09/2023 17:27

This type of swimming costume is really popular at my local leisure center. There's more butt-less costumes than ones with full coverage.

Possibly because it's more comfortable? I've never worn one but I can imagine that would be the case, similar to thongs. And it's a pain in the arse having to make sure you're cossie is in place when you get out of water...

I'm unfussed, to be honest. It's a bit of butt cheek.

More comfortable?

Like thongs?

Thongs are bliddy HORRIBLE to wear - and unhygienic, too. And who wants to see fat/saggy/scrawny/ spotty/ etc backsides everywhere? Or even nice tour pert ones like the model's?

Keep your arse covered up, ffs!

Sigmama · 23/09/2023 15:31

Thongs are horrible, why do people want fabric right up their arse

I have no problem with seeing any of the above bottoms in revealing swimwear and don't spend extra time gawping or judging them. I barely notice and certainly don't label them. I'm amazed at the level of interest everyone seems to have in other people arses.

Teddleshon · 23/09/2023 15:59

I have less than zero interest in seeing peoples arses which is why I would prefer them to be covered.

Wishthiswasntmypost · 21/09/2023 17:33

I am constantly infuriated at clothes manufacturers making women look like idiots. The vast majority of bums you see in these are not stunning. They just look frankly like they've got a wedgie. People stare with wry smiles. You never see men wearing ridiculous items of clothing. It really makes us (women)look easily led, and is usually laughable

Exactly and you never see men wearing provocatively cut clothing showcasing their intimate areas.

This is clearly built for the male gaze

disappearingfish · 23/09/2023 16:01

@Fallingthroughclouds but it's not just a few extra centimetres of skin, is it, it's right up her arse crack. With some delightful bum curlies poking out one side. I'm not a gynaecologist, a colorectal surgeon, a beautician or a yoni massager. I don't want to see strangers' arses. I think it's just good manners to keep your privates covered in public settings.

Fallingthroughclouds · 23/09/2023 16:42

I think you're just going to have to deal with it. It's far from illegal and you'll find most people just aren't bothered.

There are plenty of other choices out there. These women have chosen these items and I'm sure a lot of people think they are attractive. There is a lot of revealing clothing out there for men, just check out Shein. As for the male gaze you could argue getting your hair cut, wearing skirt, nice shoes, makeup is also for the male gaze. We could just all wear sackcloths and be done with it!

Well, I am dealing with it in that I'm not publicly confronting people, starting a petition or an anti-arse-in-public political party. A thread to air grievances on MN ranks pretty low on the activist scale.

Add in orthopaedic surgeons for hip replacements. The poor man has seen my buttocks more times over the last three years than I care to remember.

But I'm with you, for me, the arse cheek wedgie is not a flattering look. Whereas some women look amazing in other types of bikinis. I'm sure others would say the same about my swimwear which is also fine. We're all entitled to give an opinion.

Then it's part of Spanish culture... Brits didn't wear this stuff until recently either.

Oh and you're really gross for calling them slappers.

Teddleshon · 23/09/2023 17:59

@disappearingfish Thinking about it the-anti-arse-in-public political party could well be a vote winner.
