AIBU to think... 'here we go again?'

Anyone watching? I've always said 'innocent until proven guilty' but also 'there is no smoke without fire'.

Having been sexually assaulted myself, one of the stories seem so similar to mine.

What's your thoughts?

This is the most confusing post, I know. I just don't know how I feel.

Odious man. Never forget how he and the equally odious Jonathan Ross cackled like 12 year olds when they played a spiteful trick on dear Andrew Sachs on live radio, claiming they'd shagged his granddaughter. Can't stand either of them

BeckyBoo841 · 17/09/2023 12:08

In the case of Saville, do you think he should have died with his reputation in tact? Given he never faced his day in court?

He did die with his reputation intact.

It wasn't until after his death that the scale of abuse became apparent, and witnesses came forward. There's absolutely nothing, at this point, to support the assertion that RB is akin to Savile.

Both faced a trial by media.

There are still pockets of men whose sexual ‘banter’ has never left the 70/80’s. I work with such a person.

Thankfully he’s retiring soon.

Switcher · 17/09/2023 12:18

His case will be tried and hopefully come to a just and true verdict. If he has committed this crime, I don't really want to read endless column inches about what it means. It means he's a criminal who should face a stuff sentence.
If he's found not guilty it means maybe if he hadn't been such a slut he wouldn't have got himself in this misunderstanding. I really dislike him either way and he seems nuts.

billysboy · 17/09/2023 12:20

an odious sexual predator for sure , a pity there isnt a proper new broom clear out to get rid of people like him and anyone else that enabled it by not saying anything either

Furryrug · 17/09/2023 12:25

There really needs to be a massive shift in establishments regarding whistle blowing, this seems to be another case where appalling behaviour is known about but people are not confident in coming forward for fear of repercussions

BeckyBoo841 · 17/09/2023 12:17

You're deliberately ignoring a slew of nuance to suit your position. Savile was posthumously reported to the police by hundreds of people! No one has reported RB to the police.

How do you know?

BeckyBoo841 · 17/09/2023 12:29

I think you should hold that position 'that no one has reported him to the police' for a week and see if it still stands.

BaroldandNedmund · 17/09/2023 12:32

I don’t know what to think about this but I’d like to point out that Russel is nothing like Jimmy Saville. Russell’s life was absolute chaos and he’d have had very willing girls throwing themselves at him. He was a very attractive man. He was totally over the top and I imagine took things too far. I’m not apologising for him but I don’t think he’s a monster.

The youtube thing I very much doubt was pre-meditated. He’s got over six million followers and because of his way with words he can churn out a video every day with minimal planning/editing. Most videos are getting between 500k and one million views and that’s thousands of pounds every day. He’s just one of the many people who aren’t actually right wing but have started to make a fortune appealing to the right-wingers of YouTube (like Neil Oliver). So that’s how his channel has evolved.

To the people asking why these women didn't say anything earlier:

Johnny Vegas groped a woman's breasts, stuck his hand up her skirt and fingered her onstage in 2008. She was about eighteen or nineteen. I heard people saying that Johnny Vegas was such a nice man, she must have "taken it the wrong way" (WTF?), she was dining out on the drama, etc.

Vegas later appeared on the Jonathan Ross. I can't remember the exact phrasing, but they both massively downplayed what he had done.

And bear in mind that this happened not only in public, but ONSTAGE, and therefore there was no question that this really happened.

And this was only fifteen years ago.

Furryrug · 17/09/2023 12:36

@BaroldandNedmund what is he then, if not a monster?

What!

is this real?!

My god why hasn't HE been prosecuted for sexual assault??

Applescruffle · 17/09/2023 12:38

I know someone who had sex with him. It was consensual but she said he was very matter of fact about it. No seduction just "right, you're coming back with me" and seemed absolutely convinced that everyone would want to sleep with him, like it wouldn't occur to him that someone might say no.
So it doesn't surprise me.

nfkl · 17/09/2023 12:38

Trial by media means nothing

Either you have evidence of facts or you don t (and here, there are solid evidence)

That it becomes public through news media (and the Times and C4 s lawyers must have vetted this to the latest comma, the legal system doesn t look kindly on slanderers in the UK), social media, justice system does NOT change the facts.

Frances0911 · 17/09/2023 12:40

He's always come across as creepy to me, and never found him funny.

There's no way his behavior of the past twenty years would be tolerated now. He'd have simply been cancelled, which wouldn't have been a bad thing.

newnamethanks · 17/09/2023 12:41

@BaroldandNedmund oh. That's all right then. Thanks for putting us all straight. Nothing to be concerned about. Ta.

Raping multiple women is not simply ‘going too far’. It’s monstrous and needs to punished with serious jail time.

Shame on you for minimising rape. You would be singing a very different tune if it was your daughter.

And as for finding him attractive 🤮

How can you find someone attractive who pisses live on camera, with his pants going brown from the piss?

pinguins · 17/09/2023 12:42

MusicMum80s · 17/09/2023 11:46

I haven’t seen the documentary but read the evidence in the Times. The rape allegation is about as iron clad evidence wise as you can get. She messaged him about it the same night it happened and he apologised and has the evidence of this and Times have verified it was his number. She told multiple people the same day and went to a rape crisis centre with a friend the same day where they took DNA samples. She also underwent 5 months of therapy to deal with the trauma and the rape allegations are all in her medical therapy notes which have also been reviewed by the Times.

Short of having a rape on video tape this is as iron clad as cases like this get. I’d be shocked if he’s not arrested and convicted.

But has no one noticed that they never said the results of the DNA samples? Somewhere, they must have a record of those samples, if they weren't processed at the time it needs to be done now to confirm or refute what happened.
Because currently it's nowhere near iron clad. And if this does now go to court it will need to be to get anywhere, we all know how low conviction rates are.

Yes and we've heard what happened when girlfriends said no to him.

I have no doubt that there are literally dozens of audience members that 'went backstage' and were frightened into sex or a sexual act with him. I hope they are ok. This all coming out on tv must be very traumatic for them. Many of us try and forget about these incidents with entitled men. It's way too common.

That makes him a successful YouTube grifter, it doesn’t mean he’s not a YouTube grifter, or that he isn’t influential. Both things can be, and are in this case, true.

I mean, that's literally what I said when I said, that two things can be true at once.

@LaffTaff

''You're deliberately ignoring a slew of nuance to suit your position. Savile was posthumously reported to the police by hundreds of people! No one has reported RB to the police.''

Wrong...

The Met are now involved and calling for more women to come forward.

He is not getting away with it this time.
