To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

There's another thread on here tonight about how awful door wreaths are. There's a lot of misery about tonight. If you don't like these things that's fine . If you stick your nose even further up in the air you won't see any of these things anyway.

RampantIvy · 09/09/2023 20:55

Off to Google Gail's.

100% @IrateAndUnhinged . Just more stuff for landfill. Postboxes are great just as they are 😁

If it’s genuine wool then they are biodegradable. If it bothers you that much maybe you should be chasing the sheep around the fields telling them off for moulting and rubbing up on things.

Not everyone has to like or appreciate others art or crafts but no need to be the enjoyment police either.

Fallingthroughclouds · 09/09/2023 20:46

Can someone post a pic please. I've never seen one.

pictures posted on every page…rtft 🙄

Op you’re wrong. They’re works of art.

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 09/09/2023 20:57

Ok the pictures of toppers on the thread are much better than the scruffy woolly hats we have near us.

WaltzingWaters · 09/09/2023 20:57

I like them! Make me smile seeing the effort someone has gone through to make different designs. Although, yeah, they do look a bit crap after weeks of being out in the rain (which is pretty much always in the uk).

Wisterical · 09/09/2023 20:58

They're ugly as fuck and, like all 'yarn-bombing', they are just littering and vandalism. Nasty plastic yarn too.

XenoBitch · 09/09/2023 20:58

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/09/2023 20:51

Surely if you care about hospices you could cut out the middletopper and donate direct?

You could say that about literally every single event, show or project run to raise money for charity.

This. A few towns/cities have just wrapped up their painted sculpture trails. Bristol had unicorns, and Swindon had balloon dogs. Both will raise a lot of money for charity.
Going out and looking for them was a great activity for people to do over the summer holidays.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 09/09/2023 20:58

Aww I used to make postbox toppers- we had a whole local online community doing them during lockdown. It gave us a lot of pleasure to make them, and seemed to give a lot of people pleasure to see them during the dreary 2020/21 COVID lockdown winter. I got so many messages about my Christmas one to say that people were taking their children to post their Santa letters in it and that it made it really special. I only really stopped as crocheting for big occasions gave a time pressure that took some of the enjoyment away for me. You're a fun sponge OP 🤣

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2023 20:58

FuzzyPuffling · 09/09/2023 20:21

If they are genuinely made of wool, surely they would shrink in the rain and become teeny weeny egg cup toppers?

you clearly grew up in a post-lycra world of saggy knitted swimsuits

IHateWasps · 09/09/2023 20:59

I like them. They're cute and I admire the work that's put into them. I absolutely despise the ones that are put on trees though. Trees look perfectly good as they are. They don't need a bloody scarf!

RampantIvy · 09/09/2023 21:01

So Gail's are London based only?

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 09/09/2023 21:01

Oh and all my wool was donated, usually from the wool stashes of deceased old ladies. My base was reused every time (unless it was stolen, which unfortunately did happen) and figures were usually kept to be reused, or unravelled to be reworked. No extra landfill - in fact, I have probably saved loads of wool from going to landfill from house clearances!

greengreengrass25 · 09/09/2023 21:01

I think they are great

I do crochet and knit but would rather make things for my family or for gifts

margotmargeaux · 09/09/2023 21:01

YABU

They're harmless and fun.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/09/2023 21:03

No, have seen Gails in Cambridge, Marlow, Beaconsfield….

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/09/2023 21:04

I’ll ask. What is Gail’s?

Fallingthroughclouds · 09/09/2023 21:04

Oh I rarely read a full thread. Thanks for your super friendly comment though RYBXNF 😊

sheworemellowyellow · 09/09/2023 21:05

Ach, you’re just not appreciating the artistry of ‘em. They’re proper, everyday Jeff Koons for the masses.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/09/2023 21:06

@JayAlfredPrufrock
bakery

12moose · 09/09/2023 21:06

I think they're charming and I like to think, in this fast paced world, where everyone brags about how "busy" they are, some people are just happily knitting something to cheer up their town centres and make people smile.

For those who say it's just more for landfill... well, so are candles on birthday cakes, theatre props, pretty bookmarks, and all manner of unnecessary things that sweeten life.

You sound like a misery guts :D

IrateAndUnhinged · 09/09/2023 21:06

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/09/2023 21:04

I’ll ask. What is Gail’s?

If you've got £25 to spare on a dry bun it is the cafe for you

I can't decide if you actually do mean aberration or if you mean abhorration. So I am going to abstain.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/09/2023 21:07

Oh and I am another person who has no idea what a "gail's bakery" is. Certainly not a Scottish thing.

It's a bakery shop. Called Gail's.

BasicPumpkinSpice · 09/09/2023 21:08

YABU I think they are sweet
