To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

Who the fuck is GAIL?

FofB · 09/09/2023 20:44

Well, I do appreciate the work that's gone into them. However, my local town has lots and inevitably, some drunken fool will come out of the pub and knock it off- then cut a massive Facebook drama with about 500 people saying it is DISCUSTING that VANDALS have DESTROYED them. (Mainly they've just been knocked wonky)

So I'm on the fence really.......😉

They're lovely Confused

I can't imagine objecting to something so whimsical and downright British

Are you a furriner?

What's that? Is it someone who likes acrylic wool fashioned into implausible scenarios atop a perfectly innocent post processing system?

You see I could 'cheer the world up' with Pollockesque daubs on the local postboxes but that would be vandalism.

IANBU

Yes it would. Toppers are attached with cable ties and removed in seconds with a pair of scissors, leaving no evidence that they were ever there.

Royal Mail has no issue with them as long as they do not obstruct the door the postie opens, or the little square showing when the next collection is.

MidnightOnceMore · 09/09/2023 20:46

I like most of them. I'm not a fan of crocheted remembrance things, I like that to be dignified and quiet.

They cheer up other people who need cheering up. It's a bleak world at times, a bit of stupidity/eccentricity is fine - it's not like I have to join in!

Fallingthroughclouds · 09/09/2023 20:46

Can someone post a pic please. I've never seen one.

Murpe · 09/09/2023 20:47

I rather like the post box toppers, but the type of yarn bombing that consists of basically knitting an acrylic tube for a tree trunk is bizarre - how is that better than bark? Aesthetically, nor for the good of the tree itself, nor for the wildlife that exists on it? Trees wrapped in plastic, I find it quite a strange idea.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/09/2023 20:47

our closest town has them but they are only up for two months of the year and you can buy a map to find them all. All money raised from map sales goes to hospice care.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/09/2023 20:47

If the creators of these things are so community minded, why don't they make gloves/scarves for homeless guys instead? Or would that not be public enough?

That's such an irrational comment. People can't do something they enjoy and think is nice for the community as long as other, more worthy things exist?

What a miserable bunch of moaners. Crochet is hardly offensive!

Yes, because wool can just be removed, it doesn't require painting over.

fairyfluf · 09/09/2023 20:47

I quite like them. Some people go bonkers with them. I don't like them when they are soggy though.

Stroopwaffels · 09/09/2023 20:47

Oh and I am another person who has no idea what a "gail's bakery" is. Certainly not a Scottish thing.

Surely if you care about hospices you could
cut out the middletopper and donate direct?

We have a Gail's Pantry AND our local postbox was besmirched with one of these. Is it a Gail-related conspiracy?

No Gail's in our town but some great toppers. I like them.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 09/09/2023 20:49

There are always amazing ones on the postbox near me. It's outside a Waitrose and the designs are wondrous Yesterday it had one of a ginormous octopus - it was incredible. I love this humble street art - it's like the local version of Banksy. Here's a previous one. YABVU

You would certainly have a point if it were decided that all tree trunks should be covered up with crochet. The occasional crocheted trunk is just a bit of a change and displays a bit of creative craft.

Justaredherring · 09/09/2023 20:50

ong I am such a miserable old Scrooge and I think they’re adorable! They always make me (and my small children) smile. I had no idea anyone hated them! Hilarious 😆 Well done for being grumpier than me, OP!

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 09/09/2023 20:50

I agree, waste of resources, generally no style, middle class version of lame graffiti. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. And string bags are a much better use of creative energy!

ShanghaiDiva · 09/09/2023 20:50

topper photo- theme is by the sea.

You could say that about literally every single event, show or project run to raise money for charity.

ActDottie · 09/09/2023 20:52

They’re harmless and I quite like them seen some cute and creative ones in my time make me smile.

Oops- your inverse snobbery is showing.

@IrateAndUnhinged
yes, no doubt you could just donate but charities are always looking for new ways to encourage support and donations.
