To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

We used to get a few big ones every year. My own kids have had a few small ones from parties. But I would rather get the tubs. Better for sharing. There's been a few Christmases I couldn't decide between the 4 so bought all 4. Gone off quality street now though. Seem to be hard and inedible.

I prefer the tubs too Titfor

Well there's nothing U about any of that.

YANBU and you have also been educational. Our village used to have a post office - with a post box outside - but it closed down and became a nursery. Then the post box also seemed to look like a nursery with damp crochet toys on top - the phonebox had already become a library (of which I do approve) and so I assumed this was some toy equivalent of the post box, a sort of colonisation from the nursery.

It never occurred to me that the post box was still functional!

I hate the tweeness, I hate poppies making remembrance into something pretty and insta too - unless toppers are littered with shells and gangrenous limbs. Why does everything have to be cute

god I’m so annoyed - although OP you are very amusing and the thread is hilarious

How is it a waste of yarn? What do you think yarn is made for?

Because (a) rain (b) you can only use yarn so many times and (c) I prefer to use yarn for clothes.

Psychonabike · 10/09/2023 18:52

I live in a Scottish town. Scotland is mostly non supportive of the monarchy on any given public survey. Less than a third support the monarchy on any recent poll. Of the remaining third a good proportion are indifferent/neutral, so you can imagine that finding actual support for the monarchy is pretty rare except in English ex-pats and around military bases.

The local postbox topping crochet team is overwhelmingly made up of English retirees who found the town a nice welcoming place to settle. Which, generally, it very much is.

I quite like their postbox toppers around the year, but lost sympathy when they spent a lot of time complaining about vandalism of their jubilee based toppers.

I mean, read the room people. Imagine moving to another country and having the mind blowing arrogance to use public spaces to celebrate a system that the majority of people who live in that country disagree with and feel oppressed by. And then being outraged that some people took exception to it. Utterly tone deaf.

Here's a lovely one in Guernsey on a blue postbox.
Sorry if it's already been posted - have read 3/4 of the tread

You can wash sweaters knitted from yarn, so why is rainwater such an issue?

So do I. And "hard and inedible" covers a multitude of sins.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Whilst down here in the Republic of Khan I'm not bothered about the monarchy either way doesn't mean I don't object to having it embodied in acrylic in a public space.

YABVU.

I have a degree and professional corporate career.

Time picking my nose, itching my arse and scrolling on MN are a drain on resources. I could be spending all my spare time looking for a cure for cancer ( past career in medical research) or programming free school websites. But I choose not to.

I hope to god you don't have a wasteful hobbies? Like reading books and such other pointless crap that cuts down trees or uses electricity. Like being on MN. The ultimate waste of everything.

They look like absolute shit after a while out in all weathers.

Talking of which.
Some “joker” stuck one of those joke shop dog turds on the top of the village post box.
Caused uproar in the village for weeks. I thought it was hilarious, I was heavily outnumbered.
😉😁😁

Apologies. You misunderstand me. I'm not saying they shouldn't crochet toppers (if they really have to) but that they shouldn't put them on the boxes. In a public place. Where I see them.

Obviously the modus operandi of a postbox topper is to sit atop a postbox so just making the things would seem to be a waste of time. But I'm nothing if not reasonable so if people want to eschew my suggestion of making string bags then so be it.

Thing is I have a sneaking suspicion that people who create them think that they are doing something useful for society. Hence my suggestion of an alternative and even more useful hobby.

Are you jealous OP? As well as irate and unhinged?

I don't pick any vibes up which would indicate the OP is jealous???? Odd? The old MN chestnut: you express dislike for something/someone = you must be jealous.

I hate these things - I'm not jealous. I think the point is, when things are randomly placed in public spaces without any kind of consultation or agreement they will cause a reaction, and that's OK. Surely OP's point is that it's an imposition on everyone by a very small minority and if you don't like that sort of thing it IS mightily irritating. It's really not about jealousy.

I for example hate cartoony images, Disney included. I would hate it if these were scattered all over the shop so that I couldn't avoid seeing them in my everyday life. Jealousy wouldn't enter into it - red mist and rage might, though!

Sorry, you failed to see the humour in my post. I was deliberately using the MN cliche, after remarking that I was jealous of people who can knit/crochet.

I've crocheted 1.5 scarves. Badly (hence the half a scarf) so I'm well jel of the topper makers.

Maybe I'll just make many bad scarves and stick them round post boxes. I might just do that. Maybe.

Posted on wrong thread oops.

longestlurkerever · 10/09/2023 20:37

The thing is that post boxes have a positive impact on me. I really like their classic design and cheery red. I miss proper art deco phone boxes and stylish street lamps and post boxes are pretty much all we have left. So the toppers do spoil that a bit. It's not a huge thing but I do agree with the OP.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 10/09/2023 20:40

I love them! I aspire to be able to make them but I don't actually know how to knit or crochet. I have plans in my head and my local post box is just sitting there calling me... I think I'll put rabbits on my first one. I love rabbits! 🐇🐇🐇

OP you obviously are not a fan of the post box tops and can only assume that graffiti in play grounds telling little people to fuck off etc doesn’t bother you 🤦‍♀️
I would just like to say as a friend of an amazing friend who has cheered up our local post boxes . She is now disabled, walks on crutches but can still crochet and very talented. She is an amazing human being ..just think about other people’s lives before being judgy!!

They're this centuries equivalent of those hideous knitted scarecrows and clowns that were inflicted upon us when I was a kid.

BIossomtoes · 11/09/2023 14:05

Blimey, when were you a child? I’m 70 and I don’t remember being inflicted with clowns or scarecrows. They’re street art.

Where did the OP say that 'fuck off' graffiti was in any way acceptable?

You post grates because somebody's dislike/indifference or failing-to-fawn is not an indictment of the time/effort taken to produce these things, nor a personal reproach to the person themselves. There's absolutely no need to be mawkish about your friend who is not being attached in any way.

It's very much a marmite thing; I would prefer people to stop utilising/dressing-up street furniture as if it was their own personal space; it's not.
