This winter?

Seen a couple of people posting about it, tbf they are conspiracy types, but I have anxiety after having covid & long covid and can’t go through all that again. Can anyone reassure me?

Sorry what? Do you mean more covid or some different disease?

RidingMyBike · 28/08/2023 16:12

It's certain there will be another pandemic - that's how disease works. There was one in 2009 but it ended up being not a major concern so most people forgot about it. I doubt anyone can know when it will be though.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 28/08/2023 16:12

Saw something about a new strain ( yes another!!)

BIWI · 28/08/2023 16:13

There will definitely be another pandemic - at some point. Very unlikely it will be soon, i.e. later this year/early next year.

Read this extract, from The Humane League

When could the next pandemic happen?
Scientists aren't able to pinpoint precisely when the next pandemic will occur. However, they do predict that most of us will probably experience another pandemic within our lifetime.

Is there another pandemic coming after COVID-19?
According to the Center for Global Development, the annual likelihood of a pandemic is around 2-3%. That means there's a 47-57% probability that the world will experience another deadly pandemic before 2050.

The Next Pandemic Could Come Soon and Be Deadlier

Last month, CGD hosted an event on predicting the frequency and scale of future pandemics to discuss what’s to come after the COVID-19 pandemic and the critical task of preparing for future outbreak probabilities. This blog highlights three key takeawa...

Saoirse82 · 28/08/2023 16:15

I'm assuming you mean lockdown? No, there won't be another one. Even if there was an attempt the public wouldn't comply.

I've been sent a couple of conspiracy type things in regards to another lockdown but it's just BS from those who get their news from TikTok and YouTube.

Coffeaddict · 28/08/2023 16:15

I mean most microbiologists are expecting a pandemic that has the potential to be significantly worse than covid. Will it happen this year or next or in 100 years no one knows

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 28/08/2023 16:16

If you mean lockdown over a strain of covid then - no. Who is going to listen to Rishi standing in front of a podium waffling on about Hands Face Space etc?

Gcsunnyside23 · 28/08/2023 16:17

I would say I think it is 100% likely to happen in our lifetime but I doubt it'll ever get to full lockdown as no one would adhere to it because so many think it was an overreaction. And then it will end up way worse than COVID

Crunchymum · 28/08/2023 16:17

Funnily enough someone I'd consider to be a bit of a "conspiracy theorist" mentioned another pandemic type situation to me.

I didn't ask for details but they said whilst it won't be a full on lockdown there will be a huge push on vaccines and prevention (so back to mandatory facemasks and testing, possible isolations, children being asked not to come into school until they are negative etc)

I'm hoping it's all bollocks 🙏

Lookingforwardtoautumnnow · 28/08/2023 16:20

@Crunchymum Yep, similar to this, but again these are conspiracy type people, but I wish they wouldn’t post it! Where are they getting their info from

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 28/08/2023 16:20

Yes there will be another pandemic but not a lock down we won't do that again

Theunamedcat · 28/08/2023 16:20

Yes there will be another pandemic but not a lock down we won't do that again

The irony is there may be a pandemic that needs a lockdown - but everyone will be too stupid to comply, leading to many more deaths

Crunchymum · 28/08/2023 16:23

This is someone I know in RL and I didn't ask for any details, it just kind of came up in conversation.

Only way I can cope with having this person in my life is if we don't talk about certain things, but this was the info I gleaned before I shut the conversation down.

Lookingforwardtoautumnnow · 28/08/2023 16:23

@Theunamedcat But, this winter? That’s what they’re saying

OP posts:
Catusrusty · 28/08/2023 16:25

Of course there will be another pandemic.

Clearly nobody knows when, what the disease will be, how prepared we are for it or how serious the impact will be.

Anyone stating with certainty when it will be, how it will happen or how people will react is just talking bullshit.

People can pretend they're all big and brave and the won't listen to any requirements but it's all a load of old shite. It would only take the next pandemic to be a kind of Ebola virus and for the media to get hold of photos of victims and there would be widespread panic given how fast news travels these days.

If this is making you anxious OP try and stay off social media and away from conspiracy theorists.

KickingEAP · 28/08/2023 16:30

I think the only circumstances in which there would be another lockdown in this country within my lifetime would be if there was a disease that was particularly dangerous towards children.

cimena · 28/08/2023 16:31

Not this winter no OP. Or, if it is going to happen (a pandemic is always possible), I guarantee you for a fact that nobody knows about it yet.

Radiatorvalves · 28/08/2023 16:32

Covid is doing the rounds. I’ve just had it - but sniffles and a sore throat for 3 days. Not worse. I’ll take the vaccine if it’s offered.

MrsDBaddiel · 28/08/2023 16:34

Stop following conspiraloons on social media, that would be a good start.

There’s absolutely no point in asking on here either, how would anyone on this site be any more knowledgeable than you?

VickyEadieofThigh · 28/08/2023 16:34

Lookingforwardtoautumnnow · 28/08/2023 16:23

@Theunamedcat But, this winter? That’s what they’re saying

Unless they're from the future and have invented a time machine, that's just scaremongering speculation. Nobody can know that at this point.

Lastchancechica · 28/08/2023 16:35

The new strain has been circulating for weeks in Denmark, Switzerland, US and London. ( All highly careful countries that have strict monitoring policies in place)

It is causing concern because lots of patients are being hospitalised in the US.

My neighbour has it currently still ill, on week 4.

Not ideal - but I am not locking down again either way.

DyslexicPoster · 28/08/2023 16:40

I'm not hearing anything suspicious. I was aware of covid in late December 2019 and was aware of the possible impact as I'm a biologist by education so always got my ear to the ground with interesting science news.

There will be another pandemic at some point. Its inevitable really. That's nature. Not something I will worry about. Until its definitely in the news.

Lookingforwardtoautumnnow · 28/08/2023 16:20

There have been pandemics throughout human history. There will always be pandemics. Some will be minor, some less so. But the human race is still here. And they aren't getting their info from anywhere - they are making stuff up! Stop reading their rubbish - you are just feeding the beast.

Poblano · 28/08/2023 16:45

If the people you've seen posting about it have conclusive evidence that there will be another peak of Covid this winter then they are way ahead of most scientists.

The truth is, nobody knows. Statistically, there almost certainly will be another pandemic at some point. But nobody knows with great accuracy when that will be. There are also new strains of Covid, but we don't know for sure whether they bring greater risk of severe illness or whether they will be more like a bad cold.

I think politically we are less likely to go to full lockdown again. There would be lower levels of compliance and I don't think the economy can afford it.

I would suggest (kindly) that the best thing for your anxiety would be to stay away from social media and the kind of scaremongering posts that are doing the rounds.

2weekstowait · 28/08/2023 16:45

I haven't heard much, except that there is a new strain. I have observed an increase in mask wearing lately, but I highly doubt there will be any type of lockdown or restrictions. I definitely don't think most people would abide by it anyway.
