This winter?

Seen a couple of people posting about it, tbf they are conspiracy types, but I have anxiety after having covid & long covid and can’t go through all that again. Can anyone reassure me?

And yes there will be another pandemic. As we decimate the environment it will become inevitable. There’s places we weren’t supposed to be tinkering with. We only have the common cold etc because we domesticated animals. Imagine when you remove whole batches of ancient forest.

MigGirl · 28/08/2023 17:32

@Lookingforwardtoautumnnow
Trust me if we where to see an Ebola type virus (death rate around 50% on average) pandemic people would comply with lockdowns, or they would naturally not go anywhere due to the risk. I think we where lucky that covid had such a low death rate as it was.

I don't think covid is much of a threat now. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/new-covid-variant-symptoms-eris-b2399859.html

@RosemaryDill yes I also think antibiotic resistance is a huge problem right now. Let's hope they find a fix for that one or we'll be stuffed.

All we know about new Covid variant Eris and its symptoms amid surge in cases

Eris is now the second most prevalent Covid variant in the UK and most common varient in the US

Don’t listen to the conspiracy theorists listen to the doctors who know the facts

TeenLifeMum · 28/08/2023 17:33

Lots of people seem to have covid right now. Just treated like a bad cold (the current strain isn’t like previous ones).

KingSeokjin · 28/08/2023 17:34

My dad was vaccinated, he died from COVID in the early hours of Sunday morning.

@Crunchymum Yep, similar to this, but again these are conspiracy type people, but I wish they wouldn’t post it! Where are they getting their info from

Work in healthcare, not heard a single thing. Absolutely no chance the public would comply to the same level (at most, people might put on a mask in a crowded space but I think that would be it). Unless people were dropping dead in the streets from a killer disease, very much doubt there will ever be a lockdown again.

SomeCatFromJapan · 28/08/2023 17:35

I don't think we have the give in our economy for another lockdown. Economically we're in a very different position to 2019. The lockdowns weren't cheap.

IDontOftenComment · 28/08/2023 17:36

Try to stop worrying OP, I’m a bit like you, I always seem to notice anything scary in the news, but we can’t change it by worrying. Just make sure your jabs are up to date and be careful but not obsessive.
I really don’t want to catch it but I’m not going to lock myself away from family and friends. It seems some people are wearing masks in crowded places, no harm in doing that if it makes you feel safer.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/08/2023 17:37

What do you mean, 'another pandemic'? The original one never went away, it has been ongoing. The fact that the government prefer to pretend that it ended doesn't mean it did.

If there is there is nothing you can do about it so don’t bother to worry about something you can’t change and may never happen
anyone could get a terminal illness next week which is far worse but you don’t worry about that

From other conspiracy nuts.

Easy way around this is don't use Facebook as a reliable news source. Because it isn't. No social media is.

I think the only circumstances in which there would be another lockdown in this country within my lifetime would be if there was a disease that was particularly dangerous towards children.

I agree.
I don’t think many people will be prepared to damage the lives of kids because of an illness that doesn’t affect kids. Both my kids were harmed far more by school closures and lockdowns than by having Covid infection, and I expect most parents would say the same.

quiteathome · 28/08/2023 17:40

At some point there probably will be. I don't know about covid and what will happen there. It is difficult to know as not many people are testing anymore.

In the short term the country can't afford lockdowns etc. As for the future, don't really know.

I am assuming older people and vulnerable people will receive a covid vaccine with their flu vaccine this year. Apart from that I think this year will be about coping.

At some point there will be another pandemic, but we don't know what or when that will be.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 28/08/2023 17:40

We are still in the pandemic.

There will be another pandemic very soon.

It may or may not be a coronavirus pandemic.

Covid is not over.

Covid is not a cold or the flu and is not seasonal. There have not be low case numbers since 2021.

Protecting the vulnerable by locking them at home doesn’t actually protect them because by definition they are the people most likely to require outside care or healthcare and hospital visits - and unless the staff in those positions and the other patients are themselves “safe” - then vulnerable people are still at risk. I can’t believe people still don’t understand this. There are people still shielding.

The best way to prevent transmission is to improve public health and thing like ventilation in public buildings and spaces - and to isolate the sick.

We’re all screwed because people are stupid.

jamdonut · 28/08/2023 17:40

I think that unless people are dropping in the streets, nobody will be bothered in the least.

CarolDunne · 28/08/2023 17:41

I am ready for another lockdown.

I am flipping shattered with all the running around again.

A month with a 2km restriction would be lovely right now

Exactly this!
its just the public are fed up of hearing about it, the news no longer reports on it but yet some nhs staff are still dealing with multiple sick covid patients. We’ve just been told to go back to mask wearing at work. Not for the patients benefit but to protect staff, our department was almost wiped out when everyone had covid (and were poorly with it) just a couple of weeks ago. Many clinics were cancelled at the time due to staff covid sickness.

MumblesParty · 28/08/2023 17:43

OP you have to remember that anyone can say whatever they like on Facebook. I could post on there now that I’ve got inside information about a new and particularly nasty strain that is moving across from China, and that I have it on good authority that we’ll be locked down again by Christmas. I’m very selective about Facebook and have few “friends”, but if I had plenty, and if my settings weren’t private, then I could start a rumour in minutes.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 28/08/2023 17:43

All the people saying “we can’t afford lockdown” is quite short sighted - can we afford for the workforce to be decimated by disease?
Both in the short term time off for sickness but in the long term due to long term implications of infection on the body.

How many times does a child get the flu? A few times in their childhood if they’re unlucky (and they can get a vaccine) - do you honestly think they can withstand multiple covid infections each year, even once a year (and no vaccine).

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 28/08/2023 17:47

@Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic do you know nothing about Covid? Kids were typically very safe from the virus. Also, there is multiple vaccines from it which are still in place today, the uptake on them is minuscule exactly because Covid is barely a threat anymore.

KingSeokjin · 28/08/2023 17:51

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/08/2023 17:37

I'm so sorry.

Thank you

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/08/2023 17:52

I think you'd find that if the government were offering the vaccine for free, the uptake would be very high.

As it is, most people aren't being offered it this year. I personally feel so threatened by covid that if I have the opportunity to pay for vaccination, I will.

Children may 'typically' be less affected by covid but that doesn't mean that none of them get ill from it and there is increasing evidence of long term effects.
