Invited to a bbq … I’m not really a burger hot dog kinda person at all.
Everyone is bringing something, I only really would eat steak from a bbq , can I bring a steak for myself like a veggie would take a veggie burger ? I can’t afford to take steaks for everyone but will bring something else like sides potsto/pasta ?

Depends how well you know the hosts. It sounds a little cheeky, but then again if you don't like what's being served why not? Though if you are fussy how your steak is done you may be better of taking a throwaway bbq to cook it yourself

headcheffer · 26/08/2023 19:49

Jesus wept, no you can't take an expensive cut of meat just for you it's rude. It would be like taking an expensive bottle of drink and not sharing it.

Papillon23 · 26/08/2023 19:50

You can do but I would find it pretty awkward. I agree that it depends how well you know them.

I think, as an ex-fussy-eater, that I never really understand why not liking the food has much relevance. Don't you just suck that up, or not go? I spent years not liking the food though, so I just get on with it if that happens, on occasion, now.

Or take something you can take a decent contribution of - even if that's some chicken thighs cooked at home to shove in the oven and reheat.

Sparklesocks · 26/08/2023 19:50

I think it’s one thing if you brought multiples but just one for yourself is a bit different. It would be like bringing your own food to cook at someone else’s dinner party.

YouHoooo · 26/08/2023 19:50

Not unless you want to be known as ‘that rude weirdo’.

Dreamingofasandybeach · 26/08/2023 19:52

what about if you made some steak and chicken skewers? the ones where you put a bit of steak / chicken, pepper, onion, mushroom and male a few of them and then be like oh I was fancying some so thought I'd make a few? I'd be greatful if someone did that if I was throwing a BBQ - just make sure you get to them first 😋🤣

lightinthebox · 26/08/2023 19:53

No, that’s incredibly rude. A dietary or veggie requirement is one thing, but are you seriously proposing taking a steak and having the host cook it just because you don’t like bbq food?

HectorSalamanca · 26/08/2023 19:53

If I couldn't bring myself to eat a burger, I would just fill up on the sides I think. I don't think I could take just one steak. Seems a bit rude

Jellycats4life · 26/08/2023 19:53

No, you can’t. It would come across as snobby and rude.

I’d eat the food offered and save the steak for another day.

RugglesB · 26/08/2023 19:54

You're going to have to make do with sides. You can't sit there and eat your own steak in front of everyone. Blush

TheYadaYada · 26/08/2023 19:54

No. It's rude and weird. Just eat what you're served and have manners.

Terribleperso · 26/08/2023 19:54

No I Personally wouldn't/couldn't do that unless I was taking enough for everyone.
Do you like kebabs? Could easily buy some chicken/ pork and marinade and cube and then put on skewers with peppers/ onions/ mushrooms etc enough for everyone cheaply.

sugarplum33 · 26/08/2023 19:55

Definitely don't do this. There must be something else that you would enjoy from the BBQ that you could bring a sharing portion of. Halloumi? Chicken?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/08/2023 19:57

I would take a veggie or vegan offering because I am vegetarian but I would take enough to share not just some for me.. most hosts provide veggie burgers/sausages anyway so I tend to take veggie kebabs, fruit kebabs, salad, falafel,

neverbeenskiing · 26/08/2023 19:57

Of course you can't take a steak just for you and expect the host to cook it! If you were invited to a dinner party and the host served something you weren't keen on presumably you'd just deal with it? I'm not a big fan of burgers or hot dogs but if I go to a BBQ then I accept that's what's likely to be on offer.

viques · 26/08/2023 20:00

No don’t. You would have to hover over the bbq chef to make sure the steak was cooked how you wanted and to make sure some cf didn’t snaffle it! If you think they are going to be serving sub standard burgers then make your own and say you are allergic to onions or something. But take several so share.

Whattodo112222 · 26/08/2023 20:01

Definitely rude... could you eat just veggie stuff or chicken?

Whattodo112222 · 26/08/2023 20:01

Most people do chicken at bbqs. I'm sure you'll be OK.

changed1 · 26/08/2023 20:02

I would, I don't see the problem? As a host Id much rather everyone had something they like to eat than go hungry it wouldn't bother me at all. If you had an allergy or didn't eat meat produce no one would bat an eyelid if you came with your own food. So what's the difference.

Watchkeys · 26/08/2023 20:04

If you don't like bbq food, why are you going to a bbq?

Missingmyusername · 26/08/2023 20:05

Who is hosting? Could you take make steak skewers? Who the hell bbq’s a steak? Is this a thing?😂

I’m vegan- it wouldn’t bother me, but I’m easy going lol

This is what I think . If they know well that you're a fussy person , then it's Mary just being Mary .

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/08/2023 20:06

I think it’s fine. I know loads of people who follow some keto / paleo / organic diet or another, or don’t eat pork / beef, or don’t eat processed meats, or have allergies or whatever who just bring their own barbecue main. They’ll bring a something else for sharing as well, but nobody thinks anything of them having brought their own meat.

To socialise? Do you only show up to events for the grub?

To socialise? Do you only show up to events for the grub?

Then eat beforehand and show up to socialise.
