Invited to a bbq … I’m not really a burger hot dog kinda person at all.
Everyone is bringing something, I only really would eat steak from a bbq , can I bring a steak for myself like a veggie would take a veggie burger ? I can’t afford to take steaks for everyone but will bring something else like sides potsto/pasta ?

Who the hell bbq’s a steak? Is this a thing?😂

If you eat meat, yes, it is.

Of course it's a thing. There are loads of other things you can barbecue which are not processed meat products 🙄

DinnaeFashYersel · 27/08/2023 07:35

Take a steak and say you are on a diet and avoiding fatty foods. Would they might popping your steak on the bbq.

They might still think you are a bit annoying but it's less of an issue than not liking their food or you thinking they are going to give you food poisoning

Malificent1 · 27/08/2023 07:36

I really liked the skewer idea someone suggested. Chop up your steaks and make some skewers with mushrooms, chicken etc.

Canisaysomething · 27/08/2023 07:38

You don't have to take a steak for everyone! Just take a few or a few steak kebabs and they can cut them up and have a piece each or half a steak. Just don't turn up with 1. It's about sharing food not you catering for everyone there.

Mikimoto · 27/08/2023 07:02

Are you also going to take a half-bottle of Rioja gran reserva, along with some cans of Carlsberg?

@Mikimoto no but also it’s implied you “bring a bottle “ whic I will also do but it’s kinda implied you’re bringing a bottle for yourself to drink and one for the host …. Not for 15 people which is a different r expectation for food

@Canisaysomething yes actually I think if I by a couple steaks and they put on bbq and see what happens ! I can’t supply each person

In that case, you could bring lots of steaks. You can have one and others can. Check with host though so she doesn't buy too many hot dogs.

gawditswindy · 27/08/2023 07:41

Why not take some cheaper steak for everyone? You're saying you can't afford to take steak for everyone but fillet is your preferred cut. If you were to buy rump, flatiron etc you'd be able to stretch to more so it looks like a genuine contribution. Fillet's maybe not robust enough for a barbie anyway.

Missingmyusername · 26/08/2023 20:05

Who is hosting? Could you take make steak skewers? Who the hell bbq’s a steak? Is this a thing?😂

I’m vegan- it wouldn’t bother me, but I’m easy going lol

Who the hell thinks bbq-ing steak is weird? Maybe it's weird where you live but it's completely standard where I am. Even if people in your circle don't, do you not know any South Africans, Argentinians, Australians, NZers, Koreans, Jaianese..... bbq steak is normal. It's normal amongst the English where I live in Surrey also

nameitagain · 27/08/2023 07:45

@Missingmyusername DH does and over his dead body would he bbq a fillet steak!

Good grief you really are not a person who frequents bbqs are you. No one would bbq a fillet steak. It's not the right cut for bbq. One would bbq a rib eye or sirloin or if you know what you are doing you could slow bbq a joint like a rump or pincanha. It needs fat to bbq. A fillet steak would be dry

cornflakesandtea · 27/08/2023 07:47

When we do chicken we buy drumsticks or thighs and cook them in the oven before we put them on the bbq. Could you do this? Cook them at home, stick some foil over them, and then stick on bbq to reheat?

Could you buy some of those thinly sliced steaks? You could grab a few packets of them and have one on a bun?

I think the best solution is the kebab idea a pp suggested.

BringItOnxxx · 27/08/2023 07:51

As above. Take some precooked chicken and eat that.

user1477391263 · 27/08/2023 07:55

I think it would be rude.

Sorry, you have my sympathy, as only having processed meats sounds a bit grim. I hate hot dogs.

Is there something alternative and more affordable you could do that could be used to feed several people - like chicken marinated in something tasty? I don’t think you need to count the number of people attending and literally provide that many portions - just take a decent sized box with enough to provide several people’s portions. And some wine etc.. Then just have some of your chicken and the veggies.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/08/2023 07:58

Why don’t you eat something before you go, buy a couple of steaks and cut them into say 4 portions? Hover. Ensure you get one or 2 bits of steak and a bit of chicken.

54isanopendoor · 27/08/2023 07:59

OP you need a cheaper cut of steak to barbeque so it isn't dry (something with more fat than fillet). aldi, lidl or morrisons are all ok & you'll get 4/6 for £20.
cube it & thread on skewers with onion, mushroom, cherry tomatoes if you like.
you can make up quite a few skewers with 4 steaks- prob about 8 or 10?
when you get to the barbeque, say to your hosts that you are on a paleo diet.
so plse could they save a couple of skewers for you if poss? then hope for best!

Cynicaltheorist · 27/08/2023 08:01

Honestly, OP, it sounds as if BBQs are not your thing so don't go. And you're expecting your host to cook your steak for you. Talk about precious: 'you can all eat burgers and sausages but I can only eat fillet steak.'

No reason you can't taken a potato dish and a salad and eat those and just not have meat. You sound very high maintenance and a real pita.

Janieforever · 27/08/2023 08:01

I think maybe as you’ve so many issues round bbq food, you could eat your steak before you go or when you get back? Then if you take some veggie skewers and say pasta salad, you can maybe cope without meat for the time you’re there?

fedupnow2 · 27/08/2023 08:02

One meal that you can just fill up on sides won't kill you? You will stand out like a snob and embarrass yourself. Skewers are also an option.

CoreopsisEverywhere · 27/08/2023 08:03

Just take lots of nice side dishes and eat those or some kebabs to spread the meat more thinly. You won’t starve.
Taking 1/2/3 steaks will just be rude, and with more than 1 they might well just be taken by other people (and it would look so rude if you insisted on having one of them).

Melmi256 · 27/08/2023 07:18

@Terrysnotmine fillet ! And not cook myself

This detail is breathlessly unreasonable. You want to take fillet steak, the cut for
people who want to look fancy but don’t actually know what tastes best, to be cremated by someone else on a barbecue? At least take sirloin.

Wiii · 27/08/2023 08:19

What about taking a veggie burger and saying you're cutting down on your meat, if it's getting food poisoning you're worried about.

Sueveneers · 27/08/2023 08:19

Where I am we do a piece of steak in the burger instead of ground beef. It really tastes much better.

BackAgainstWall · 27/08/2023 08:20

Not a good idea.
People would notice and you’d make yourself look very selfish being the only one eating it.

Morechocmorechoc · 27/08/2023 08:20

Underdone pork won't hurt you and is often served slightly pink in a nice restaurant. So have pork. Also its so obvious if chicken is properly cooked, so get a piece, take it straight apart and look. If the liquid on the.b9ne is clear it's cooked.
