To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

Don’t give a shit about the swearing but the nickname, ‘Lionesses’ makes me cringe myself inside out for some reason.

Not half as cringy as the Matildas though!

There are many things in life that are “totally unnecessary” @enchantedsquirrelwood indeed football is one of them. So is opera. And really nice wine. Or lovely frivolous clothes. But life would indeed be a poorer place without them. And i Happen to like swearing. It adds to me life’s rich tapestry. And you can’t fucking stop me!

Very well put!

Swearing is a great communication resource. Nothing more eloquent than a good curse in context. And a World Cup final is definitely the right context.

Inertia · 21/08/2023 16:06

YABVU.

Mary Earps is an absolute role model in terms of resilience and determination to succeed. I would be delighted if my daughters showed her talent, drive and passion. She is brilliant .

😂

I once taught where a mixture of Spansh and English was used, teaching was in English and sometimes when I heard things being said in Spanish I would say 'Do not use langauge like that in this room' and they never knew that I spoke little Spanish but tone, looks and gestures are very telling!

ItWasneaMe · 21/08/2023 16:10

Lest we forget this, they may not have won but they came second IN THE WORLD. That's an achievement in itself.

"I've just googled 'Jordan Pickford - swearing' and one of the first things that came up was how fans were left 'amused' at his outburst to a linesman in a game in 2019, saying that the player was 'fucking off side you cunt'.
Swearing at an official, on the world stage, being a role model."
So why was he not sanctioned for that behaviour? If any of us spoke to someone at work like that in a lot of cases we'd be out of a job. So why is ok for somebody getting paid to do a hobby and be cited as a role model?

Not being an official at the game concerned, I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️ however the point was that OP said it's not tolerated in the men's game as part of her argument.
Clearly it is. And if it's tolerated in the men's game then the only hypocrisy would be to not tolerate it in the women's game because it's women.
Whether you agree or disagree with it being tolerated at all is a different question.

saraclara · 21/08/2023 16:13

She swore, at nobody in particular, loudly and passionately after succeeding under huge amounts of pressure

That. I'm not a swearer and I hate the use of the c word. But for goodness sake, the adrenaline, the achievement, the stress...I totally understand why she'd react that way. She was an absolute star, and yes, a role model to every young girl.

If a parent is incapable of explaining to their seven year old that 'yes, we don't swear, but sometimes people are under huge pressure and they'll use one of those words, and that's okay' then that's their problem.

Excellent point.

No, they have parted ways with him.

I thought this was going to more about it not being the save of the century. DP predicted exactly where the Spanish player would aim based on her past penalty taking and she didn't strike it particularly well.

That said, I think the Lionesses have all been phenomenal by and large. I don't condone violence and Lauren James rightly served a two match ban.

of COURSE that the man knew @MotherOfGodWeeFella I mean, why do women even play football eh.

Swearing angrily at children in your care is not the same as swearing triumphantly at the void.

Do you honestly not know this?

I think she was fantastic, pure talent and fun personality.

What about musicians wearing fuck all, grinding and their lyrics all aimed at children?

Which musicians are doing that? I seriously can't think of any.

Sorry - that should have said "Do you honestly not know this @titbumwillypoo ?"

Tit. Bum. Willy. Poo.

Yeah, I saw a bloke on Facebook complaining yesterday that her behaviour wasn't 'ladylike'. Quite right. A women's place is to look pretty, keep the house and the kids clean and make sure her husband is happy. Quite what she is even thinking playing football I don't know. All that mud and extra washing she's creating for herself. Disgraceful.

Ha this

almostoverthehill · 21/08/2023 16:33

I have no words! Honestly OP. I suspect you will be another that won’t return as you didn’t get the response you had hoped for. I can only imagine you are a woman of older years to have such a backward mindset.

Want2beme · 21/08/2023 16:34

Spanish manager, "¡puta!". Look it up.

Mary Earps is a legend.

ODFOD - he told me as we were watching and he was right! He said, "If Earps has done her research she'll know she usually aims bottom right [of the goal as seen on screen]." He knows loads of football stats and info. And he's a former ref of women's and men's football. He says the women's game is more skills based as the men tend to rely on the additional physical power they have.

I'm 65. I LOVE Mary Earps and all the other Lionesses!

No need for the ageism. My relatives in their 80s are absolutely open minded and forward looking, and wouldn't have batted an eyelid at a fairly understandable expression of emotion under pressure.

Backward mindsets have more to do with personality and education than they have to do with age.

Mikimoto · 21/08/2023 16:51

So the "model" is to not have A-levels, get covered in cheap tattoos and swear disgustingly in front of millions of kids on national tv?
How about any male partners involved: do they were polo shirts done up to the top, and white trainers? Because that's a great look.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/08/2023 16:52

Slight derail but excellent news about Mason Greenwood.

Cowardly of united to feel the need to do a "litmus test" first but hey ho.

JayJayEl · 21/08/2023 16:56

Hahahahahaha. Are you actually being serious? You're trolling, right?!

titbumwillypoo · 21/08/2023 16:59

MasterBeth, I asked why it is acceptable for sports people to use foul language at their place of work and still be cited as role models and not face disciplinary actions yet in most other professions behaviour like that would result in major sanctions?

MumToBeOf2 · 21/08/2023 17:00

You're a prude.

I've been to Lionesses games before, she's a wonderful woman. She's an inspiration for so many, and her swearing a little isn't a big deal.
