To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

OP posts:

She's hero worshipped because of her talent, determination and tenacity. I couldn't give a shiny shit if she swears. If I had daughters, I'd want them to look at her as a role model, she's fantastic. Females can swear too OP, its no reflection of whether they're amazing or otherwise. I don't think we all have to be 'laaaaaaydies' to be incredible.

melaniepond · 21/08/2023 14:57

BloodyPrime · 21/08/2023 14:28

FIFA said Earps' positioning was checked by VAR and the goalkeeper's foot was on the line when the penalty was taken.

“As with all penalties, the Video Assistant Referee checked Spain’s penalty for encroachment by the goalkeeper and determined that Mary Earps’ back foot was in line with the goal line,” FIFA said in a statement issued after the game.

It didn’t look that way at all but I’m happy to accept it and therefore have zero issues with Earps!

Maverickess · 21/08/2023 15:01

I've just googled 'Jordan Pickford - swearing' and one of the first things that came up was how fans were left 'amused' at his outburst to a linesman in a game in 2019, saying that the player was 'fucking off side you cunt'.
Swearing at an official, on the world stage, being a role model.

That didn't seem to cancel out the achievement of him taking and scoring a penalty in the same game, or many of the brilliant saves he's made before or since, or the hero worship. So why should it for his female counterpart?
And obviously it is absolutely is tolerated in the men's game.

In a game that we lost, Mary Earps performed her boots off, yet people have to try and discredit it somehow rather than celebrate the way this women's team has performed consistently to get to that stage and the interest it has sparked for women's football as a sport all over the country and in particular one woman's skill.

We showed the game at work yesterday - the atmosphere was amazing - just like any other high profile game, exactly as it should be.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/08/2023 15:08

Do you think she not quaite naice, OP?

The lionesses don't set themselves up as role models, the press do that for them.

HTH.

Also fed up with all the hype of the Lionesses. KJT won a gold medal in athletics yesterday but nobody cares because it didn't involve kicking a ball around.
I was about to say much the same thing.
I agree that it is unreasonable to expect women athletes to be held to higher standards of behaviour than the men and I'm pleased our nationsl team has done well. But I am fed up of all the hype around the Lionesses too. (Not their fault as individuals I don't suppose.) People are kidding themselves if they think that the interest is because they're women and it's beneficial to women's sport in general. The interest is because it's football and this is a football obsessed nation. The rest of women's sport is still an after thought.

Yeah we know - I’m interested in the football, as I am with the men’s. Our better national team just happens to be the women’s, and that’s no bad thing. Who do you think is kidding themsleves?! 😂

RobertaFirmino · 21/08/2023 15:11

What we have here is this:

'Footballer swears on the pitch'.

You're only outraged because she's a woman. Did you think it'd be a sweet little kickabout between the gyals? It is not ME's job to 'think of the chiiiiildren'. It is your job to think of your children and if you are offended by swearing then I'd suggest not letting them watch any more games because our female players are just as serious and passionate about the game as the men. Some would say perhaps even more so.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/08/2023 15:16

People like/watch different sports shocker! I don't watch athletics much, or cricket or tennis - I do watch football, three day eventing, show jumping and occasionally rugby - I have always watch football - I am from a family of footy fans - 2 of my three DD's play for women's teams, we go to the women's FA cup final every year and have done for years - all this 'whataboutery' is silly

You need to go to Specsavers then because she wasn’t a mile off at all

Mummytotwonow · 21/08/2023 15:21

FGS it’s a swear word - she’s passionate, has a kick ass boss woman attitude - something I want my daughter to have, especially in this day and age!! It was a bloody cup final and she saved a goal!! She’s not walking around swearing I’m front of lots of people/kids

RestingMurderousFace · 21/08/2023 15:24

Don’t give a shit about the swearing but the nickname, ‘Lionesses’ makes me cringe myself inside out for some reason.

melaniepond · 21/08/2023 15:25

@WeetabixTowels You’re quoting me saying I was happy to accept I was wrong. I wasn’t the only person who thought she was well off her line but certain camera angles can be deceptive. I think she’s a great goalie.

CurlyTandtheTangles · 21/08/2023 15:27

Oh leave her alone.
She's not there declaring "look at me everyone.. I'm a role model".

She's worked hard to become a brilliant goalkeeper.
Not a role model - That's a load media crap dangled over them. Fantastic of she inspires others. but she was there to save goals.

So she swore at a time of intensity.
You never sworn OP?? Twiddle your pearls.

MrsAvocet · 21/08/2023 15:29

All the people who are trying to tell us that the progress of women's football is beneficial to women's sport in general, and indeed wider women's rights that's who. A huge part of the hype around the Lionesses has been from a feminist angle not a sporting one. There have been loads of posts on here in recent weeks exhorting women to get behind the team for no other reason that they are women, and berating those of us who are not interested in football for not doing so. But that seemingly doesn't apply to women who are similarly successful in other sports. Which is fine, if people are honest about being interested in the football team simply because they are football fans, but there has been a lot of claims made about the wider impact of this team's success that I can't see any evidence for.

TakeNoNoticeoftheNoise · 21/08/2023 15:32

I agree, I'm no prude and can swear like the rest of them, but she is a huge role model for young girls and this showed a real lack of judgement. That said, I do like her and think otherwise the Lionesses have done the nation proud (except Lauren James kicking her opponent!).

So why was he not sanctioned for that behaviour? If any of us spoke to someone at work like that in a lot of cases we'd be out of a job. So why is ok for somebody getting paid to do a hobby and be cited as a role model?

Cyclebabble · 21/08/2023 15:38

Wind up post right? She was awesome.

AllyCart · 21/08/2023 15:40

I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross...

Your language is not so clever, either.

Who the fuck uses "gross" other than American teenagers?

BygoneDays · 21/08/2023 15:42

OP, remember what you said when you saved that penalty in that World Cup Final?

No, me neither.

BygoneDays · 21/08/2023 15:43

titbumwillypoo · 21/08/2023 14:25

I'm confused, if this was a teacher or a nurse swearing in front of their customers they'd get hauled over the coals. The majority of people are able to do their jobs without swearing in the course of their work. So can someone please explain why "professional" sports people are not only excused for this behaviour but cited as role models?

You don’t play much sport do you?

ohfook · 21/08/2023 15:44

But nobody is hero worshipping her because she swears. They're hero worshipping her because of her being a standout player on the pitch yesterday. That save was awesome and she had her work cut out against a clearly better side.

I actually don't care for football. What I like about her is how she's taken Nike to task over their crappy treatment of goalkeepers.

I’d be confused if a nurse or a teacher was standing in goal for England as well

We are not “clients” we are supporters.

I will confess to not having seen any of hte match but to have anyone moan about swearing on MN is priceless, I have read on here things I have never before seen in writing or rarely heard!

Frazzled2108 · 21/08/2023 15:54

Oh get a grip. She is fucking inspirational.

AreYouShittingMe · 21/08/2023 15:54

Raw emotion. Anyone who has a problem with that needs to ask themselves why.
Goalkeepers often get the shitty end of the stick- an outfield player makes a mistake, there is often someone else who can cover for you. Keeper makes a mistake it's more costly. As Casillas said 'no matter how many goals you save, people will only remember the one you missed'.
Mary E will have had a career of people reminding her of her misses, too right there's going to be some emotion when she makes such an important save.

JudgeJ · 21/08/2023 15:56

LubaLuca · 21/08/2023 12:33

She swore, at nobody in particular, loudly and passionately after succeeding under huge amounts of pressure. Big deal. Nobody's saying this is the reason she's a hero, it's just an amusing clip from the match.

I don't know if the Spanish players were swearing too, I can't speak Spanish.

Having seen Spanish TV quite a lot I can assure you that they swear, often in English too! Some German guests once told us the English is the best language for having a really good swear.
