Have you ever been ‘outed’ on Mumsnet

There are so many threads now where people feel they might be ‘outed’.
Have you ever recognised somebody or been recognised on Mumsnet?

Yes.

A family member asked me if I'm a particular username. I said no but they were correct!

I name changed and am now more careful about what I post.

littlepeached · 04/08/2023 15:20

Yup! Got me into trouble actually.

AdamRyan · 04/08/2023 15:22

Yes - both ways 😂

SnotSnotSnottySnot · 04/08/2023 15:22

Nearly, twice! Name change frequently now.

MiMiPies · 04/08/2023 15:23

I've recognised someone on here but no one's said they've recognised me yet

ilovesooty · 04/08/2023 15:25

A former friend of mine posted here and I could recognise her through every name change. I think she was banned in the end.

I couldn't care less about being recognised on here personally.

twelveerasers · 04/08/2023 15:26

Yes I'm very sure that a friend recognised herself as the toxic friend /bully in a post I wrote and she's been smarmily nice to me ever since. I think she knows that I know that she knows but neither of us will talk about it and if she said anything I'd deny it completely

FallopianTubeTrain · 04/08/2023 15:26

My mum spotted me a few years ago on a food nostalgia thread. I spotted my mum earlier this year on a book recommendation thread.

cheerioagain · 04/08/2023 15:27

I wonder how many of any one user’s friends/family etc are actually on here. Like I wonder what the odds are. It’s a big site but does everyone use it? Hmm

Thesearmsofmine · 04/08/2023 15:29

I recognised someone from a very personal situation that they posted about. I would never tell them though.

OneTC · 04/08/2023 15:30

Yes years ago I described a (fairly distinctive) friend of mine and a poster recognised who I was talking about and worked out who I likely was from that.

Was kind of a shock though.

I have no idea who the other poster was

Maddy70 · 04/08/2023 15:30

Yes I have been recognised on here. Doesn't bother me hughly I don't have a lot to hide

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 04/08/2023 15:30

I've been stalked around the net recently, including MN, because I'm a, "mean, evil terf".
Sge made up things about my daughter and refused to pay back money she owes me, because of my views.

OSU · 04/08/2023 15:34

I spotted my sister on here years ago.

veryberrypericherry · 04/08/2023 15:35

And just changed my username again!

Sometimes I see threads and think 'oooh is this a trap?' So if I answer truthfully to the thread someone will know it's me!

Like when a local area one comes up, a work area one and something about kids like mine I think hmmm is someone fishing to try and catch me!

I know, I know! I'm not paranoid in other ways, honestly!

HakunaMatiłda · 04/08/2023 15:36

I know my SILs username

IglesiasPiggl · 04/08/2023 15:38

I recognised a school mum on here after she posted about a very specific local incident that only she and I witnessed. I didn't tell her though.

I’ve thought this too!
I name changed frequently for this reason.

Goldenboysmum · 04/08/2023 15:41

Yes, with this username, ( a lady who lives in my area) but anyone who knows me would work it out easily.

My son was my Goldenboy and I've posted about his suicide, his name and a photo.

I do have another username that I use for other stuff and as far as I know I've not been recognised with that one.

TheSlowRush · 04/08/2023 15:45

Yes - someone recognised me and it ended a friendship.

Oh my god!!! Me too.

sunshineandstrawberryjam · 04/08/2023 15:50

One of my workmates is very outspoken on FWR. She posted about some issues in our (fairly woke, tbh) workplace and I worked out who it was. I've not said anything, but it's made me a lot more careful as I now know how easy it is to be recognised.

Kaibashira · 04/08/2023 15:51

Once my friend was texting me about my new baby. She then put the gist of the exchange on mumsnet and I read it basically in real time. It wasn't mean-spirited so I didn't tell her then and probably never will.

Thebigblueballoon · 04/08/2023 15:53

No trap here, genuinely interested.
I don’t see the point of a name change if you’re going to apply the specifics to a story?!

I recognised my opposite neighbour on here. It was on a thread about 'normal people' sending their kids to private school. Their house is worth >>£1 million and they drive a Tesla, which made it all the more ironic.
