To think Catherine Tyldesley is a CF - cakegate

I can’t help but feel that when you’re in a position of privilege and a celeb of any description, you shouldn’t by asking small independent businesses for free shit...

But, if you do, at least own it. The video of her belittling “the cake lady” really shows what a tramp she actually is.

Cakegate: Ex-Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley hits back after 'bizarre' row with Three Little Birds Bakery over free cakes

Three Little Birds Bakery said it declined a request from an events agency to make a cake and 100 cupcakes for the birthday of a "well-known" celebrity - later revealed to be Tyldesley - in exchange for promotion on social media and in a magazine.

She has shit in her own nest, so to speak. A flamingo nest at that which is just a mound of mud really, so appropriate.

Imagine having a party where all your celebrity guests (as quoted in the email) know you tried to blag your cake? Every look or taste of it will be the elephant in the room. Maybe the cake should have elephants 🐘 instead of flamingos.🦩

LoobyDop · 04/08/2023 08:58

The best, biggest giveaway in the story was the request “oh, and a small cake for her husband, because it’s his birthday too”. Very clear who the main character is in this universe.

I don't really know who she is but even I can see she's put a spoke in her own career by behaving like an entitled brat and then doubling down on it.

I did see her instagram video, someone shared it on twitter as "when you order Mrs Merton from Wish" which made me laugh long and hard.

Foolish woman.

"when you order Mrs Merton from Wish"

🤣

That's it! I'd been trying to work out who she was putting me in mind of during her catty rant! Quite uncanny lol.

Just so supportive on here this morning. ☹️

Everyone is being supportive though..of the ‘cake lady’. Honestly if you are going to trot out the meaningless ‘be kind’ phrase which basically means ‘shut up and let people behave how they like no matter how rude and entitled they are’, you can’t not expect your post to be commented on scathingly.

I reckon OK mag was a total lie" is she pamicing it was just blagging and worried nox OK wont feature her ever again!! like who buys Ok still??
I saw the K hopkins video and thought her specs were hilarious BUT dont think either 2 women come across well(CT being the absolute worst)
There was no need to put in so much detail re the HB but I suppose it detailed the sheer outrageousness of the ask.
I dont know- i dont think the LBB was looking for this to go quite so viral.
Ct is a total muppet and a wasp. like she is toast on the celeb circuit for a while at least!! so hard on small business nowadays. The Mel B cake was FAB

I saw the bakers post and applaud her .. in the events industry this seems commonplace and beggars belief to expect skilled people to work for free . Catherine s response was below the belt and unpleasant. I doubt very much that the baker needs any kind of publicity .
I work in events and have worked for high profile clients , but was contacted by a tv programme Real Housewives of Cheshire in 2016 to provide my services in return for “exposure” and responded to them with a similiar email … not surprisingly I didn’t get a response back !
You can die of exposure 🤣

oh my god; that email is pure class!!

SunnyCornishCove · 04/08/2023 08:36

I don't support freebies like this, but I don't think the bakery displayed the best professionalism at all. They must have known the celebrity name would come out. All the passive aggression from both sides - really unsavoury.

The bakery have the right to push back on unreasonable asks.

And other small businesses may be emboldened by 3LB’s response to refuse similar unreasonable asks.

Radyward · 04/08/2023 09:08

Be kind sends me straight to RAGE .hate it
whats wrong with calling someone out on their actions when they refuse to apologise?? Tone deaf doesnt come close
Entitled much CT!

BoohooWoohoo · 04/08/2023 09:12

I'm behind the bakery 100%. They were right to publish the actual email so that people could see for themselves the cf behaviour that small businesses deal with. I have seen small businesses make sm videos with the "exposure not paying the bills" sound and this is what they mean. By publishing the email, hopefully people will stop trying to blag freebies from this baker who is good enough to do a Spice Girl's paid cake.
I assumed that CT was using a filter to look skinny in that video. She should have stayed quiet or issued an apology rather than make things worse. Her children don't deserve harassment but as a person whose feed is #ad #gifted , she is being a cf. Why is she exempt from being kind and where is her respect towards a successful female business owner? Just because CT thinks she has more influencing power than she does, it doesn't make it ok to behave like this. She's not the only "celebrity" who could pay but won't but should have shut up or admitted it. I guess that people will be waiting to see if she posts a birthday cake on SM for her birthday.

SunnyCornishCove · 04/08/2023 09:12

@CherryMaDeara I agree the bakery should push back on unreasonable requests, but to publicly shame in a such a passive aggressive manner, I wouldn't use them as it showed them to be just as unpleasant as CF and her crew.

Fizbosshoes · 04/08/2023 09:12

I think she a scapegoat for all the other freeloaders (she won't be the first and she won't be the last)
But I think the Instagram post probably made things worse, and she didn't cone across well or seem very apologetic. She looked very thin in it but I wasn't sure if it might have been filtered (not that that's relevant)
What I find strange about "influencers" or Instagram in general is that the celeb/influencer gets an item for free, when in most cases they could easily afford it....but it may well be out of budget for many of their followers. (Ive never understood why A list celebs get goody bags worth thousands at the Oscars either when they could afford all the stuff themselves anyway)

CherryMaDeara · 04/08/2023 09:04

We are supportive, we’re supporting small businesses, not tight but well off celebrities.

I don;t think she IS that well off. Apparently the very top "names" in soaps like Coronation Street are on about £100k. That is a good whack of money, but not film-star level. And she stopped earning that - if she was ever on the top money in the first place - over 5 years ago. And since then has only had dribbles of work here or there.

She is not nearly in the same earnings league as other TV names like Holly Willoughby, Zoe Ball etc. But still wants the celeb lifestyle.

Elmers · 04/08/2023 09:14

There are so many elements of this that make it farcical.

  • the fact they attempt to claim she's a big deal with lots of celeb friends (without naming her)
  • Any true celeb wouldn't need to be asking for freebies, they have brands sending them all sorts for free
  • That they seem to think having over 7000 followers is impressive. It might be for some everyday nobody like me, but for a big celeb, that's actually a bit of an embarrassing number
  • The percentage of those 7000 (of which who knows how many are bots) actually becoming paying customers of the cake lady would be absolutely miniscule - potentially zero, especially as it's something that can't be purchased online and posted
  • That CT tried to claim the bakery was always going to get paid and the company were being misrepresented when the lady shared a screenshot of the actual message which clearly stated "payment would be made in the form of promotion on their socials"
  • That they then sent legal threat to the cake lady, as if that was doing them a favour
  • That she even thought saying anything other than "oh I'm so sorry to the cake lady, of course I'd like to pay her" was wise.
  • The sheer arrogance of everyone other than the baker
As you might be able to tell, this one has really got under my skin.
Magssss · 04/08/2023 09:15

Bit of an aside, but I really worry about the children of influencers. It strikes me as such an unhealthy environment to be born into (elaborate birth announcements are just the beginning). The children just seem such an afterthought to the most important thing which is the parent keeping on top of content/likes/responding to comments/taking 1000s of photos to get just the right one. the children have no say about maybe wanting to grow up privately. Imagine that was your mum or dad doing that to you. I find the whole thing so narcissistic and concerning.

What will she do about the party now I wonder? Jason Manford has already been booked to attend apparently 😂

Did you see JM sticking up for her on SM? Normally I like him but it’s a bit grim. And I bet he’s getting paid 😂

The bakery have the right to push back on unreasonable asks.

And other small businesses may be emboldened by 3LB’s response to refuse similar unreasonable asks.

I think it’s great what they did and hopefully will make other celebrities and their representatives think twice before making this sort of entitled, exploitative request.

The thinking behind it is really quite unpleasant – hopefully your business is struggling enough that you will do a significant amount of work for free, in exchange for some crumbs of ‘exposure’. The pressure and culture of such requests is insidious and grinds you down as a small business owner. It’s demoralising.

This business’s response will have empowered others to draw a clear line in the sand and stand firm against attempts to devalue their work.

It’s great that she drew attention to this.

TheCrystalPalace · 03/08/2023 22:19

Very unwise response. Came across as a spiteful dig.

Also, has she lost a huge amount of weight? Her face in that video looked very different from the other photo in the article.

She didn't look real, she looked like an android. I hope it's filters.

MeinKraft · 04/08/2023 09:21

Do you know, yesterday I thought a what a storm in a teacup over a misunderstanding, she can't have known the company were asking for the cakes for free. But now I've watched her response and 😬 what a dick 😆

SunnyCornishCove · 04/08/2023 09:23

@Holscgnmusch you're entitled to your opinion but I entirely disagree. There's nothing great whatsoever about the bakery's post. Really distasteful and spiteful to start with. I wouldn't use them.

grass321 · 04/08/2023 09:24

the children have no say about maybe wanting to grow up privately. Imagine that was your mum or dad doing that to you. I find the whole thing so narcissistic and concerning.

It's horrendous. Particularly photos/videos in the bath or on the loo. Why would you share those type of photos with thousands of random strangers? (Not to mention the chance of it being doctored for nefarious purposes).

And that's before we get to the reality of your life being one long Truman show. Everything, no matter how private, being a video opportunity. The worst are sharing your kids' personal medical details (Mrs Hinch, I'm looking at you).

CT came across as petulant and spiteful in her riposte. Far worse PR than the original email.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 04/08/2023 09:24

It’s not just z listers, I know someone who owns a successful clothing company and her DH owns a successful company too. She’s forever grifting asking for “free” stuff like childcare (when the grandparents can’t do it!) and other bits and pieces like cake, party stuff etc. She’s very focussed on her designer lifestyle and looked up to Katie Price.

I think if one person does it the others will follow. So it’s good Catherine has been called out on it.

GenieGenealogy · 04/08/2023 09:26

CT came across as petulant and spiteful in her riposte. Far worse PR than the original email.

Agree with this. If she'd made a video saying that she had no idea businesses were being asked for freebies, that she was very sorry and that she wished the amazing bakery every success in the future, this would have all gone away.

But she didn't, she doubled down on her "it weren't me, babes" nonsense and has just made herself 100 times worse.

MillWood85 · 04/08/2023 09:26

Oh the Be Kind brigade have arrived... hurrah.

Next on MN Bingo is the "remember Caroline Flack...."" then we can shout full house.

Hmm

100k is a shit load. Even if she's on a good bit less, she's on a good whack. She's not on UC. From her video, she comes across as an entitled little madame. And i haven't a clue who she is, so she should bear in mind that she's perhaps not half as famous as she thinks she is.
