Just after everyone's opinions. I'm on an all inclusive holiday . Nothing flash . European destination. Hot sunny . 3*. Would you feel offended if a female sunbathes topless at the pool? Just for context I have done , but put bikini top on to go in pool and her drinks . It's literally just going topless when laying on sunbed . More context age range is babies up to 70+ . Lots of different shapes and weights of people . Lots of bellies make and female and lots of big boobs on men. Like I say this is just for context . Just interested in people's opinions. I'm with my husband on holiday .

What I find quite odd is wanting to get your tits out in a family environment, like at a family hotel pool.

And if its just a body and shouldn't be sexualised then why can't people just go the whole hog and get some sunshine on their anus?

This.

KimberleyClark · 04/08/2023 10:53

I’ve only ever done it once, in the far distant past as a 20 something on holiday with a friend. But I wouldn’t do it now. Just wouldn’t feel comfortable.

BonneMamanIsMyJam · 04/08/2023 10:55

I wouldn’t judge you for being topless although I would judge you for sunbathing given how bad it is for your skin

If I was there with you OP I would be topless too. With plenty of sunscreen of course. I fail to understand the objectors on here.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That must apply to disgusting as well.

Your ideas about anuses sound quite repressed from my perspective. There's nothing sexual about an anus. It's a waste deposit.

Comedycook · 04/08/2023 11:00

I feel like it's more acceptable on a beach than by a hotel pool...but no idea why I feel like this.

Eyesopenwideawake · 03/08/2023 18:25

@AncientBallerina Not a problem in Portugal, all ages, all sizes. No issue at all.

Where I’ve been (which admittedly is the same area in Algarve many times) there would be very few women topless, like you might see one or two a day on a busy beach. Never/rarely at the pool. Mostly Portuguese holiday makers. I found it unusual because everyone of all ages was wearing thongs but everyone had a bikini top on!
Maybe it varies by location in Portugal?

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 04/08/2023 11:09

Zebedee999 · 04/08/2023 10:25

Neither men nor women should be topless in the scenarios you mention. But why single out women for your misogyny? One rule for men, another for women right.

Lol I’m misogynistic now I’ve heard it all ffs.

Breasts are sexualised.
You can’t lie and say they’re not.

Would you be happy being at a pool with your kids or grandkids whilst a man’s sitting there with his penis out?

At a beach you can see someone from a distance and there's plenty of space to actively avoid them if you're not comfortable

If you’ve got no bottoms on then there is a big chance you could show your anus because you’re not stuck like a statue the entire time.

I was on a nudist beach and saw plenty of anuses when people were bending over or moving into s different position.
Probably why I didn’t stay long and it was my first and last ever time on a nudist beach.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 04/08/2023 11:16

Those of you that say that breasts are not sexual (which I would agree with when they are performing their main function - feeding) ; do your breasts not feature heavily in your sex life? I wonder if that's the difference.

I think it's inappropriate in front of children - maybe because I have girls, maybe not. We drill in to them the pants rule, but also the private parts rule. Your chest area is private, no one should be touching it or asking to see it. To then have a random woman get them out in front of everyone to save tan lines would just confuse matters.

I think it's really tacky, luckily we don't stay at places where this is considered normal.

Breasts are sexualised it's sad but there it is. There is a reason women don't walk around town centers with their breasts out, or forests or theme parks etc... It is attention seeking, it's very obvious.
I really don't like it around children, they can't consent to seeing it and I think from about age 9 upwards when they really start noticing bodies of the opposite sex it's not really great for young boys to be forced to be around it.
If you want to do it at the beach I have much less of a problem with it, but around a family pool I'd definitely judge you.”

Really good points. OP, forcing younger children to look at naked breasts, which they wouldn’t be allowed to see in a film, for example, is unfair. Not all children have been breastfed and you may make them feel uncomfortable. You may believe that they shouldn’t feel that way but that’s for their parents to decide, not you.

At a family hotel, inappropriate.

natura · 04/08/2023 11:25

Curious about those of you saying it's fine at the beach, but not by a pool – what's the rationale there?

I'm assuming there are likely to be kids in both places...

TedMullins · 04/08/2023 11:31

All these people saying “breasts are sexual, sad but true” and using that as justification for it being inappropriate to be topless… so you’d rather just roll over and accept the misogynist status quo than do something to challenge it? It’s an absolutely unfair double standard that women’s breasts are sexual but men’s chests aren’t and a fairly recent one too - in medieval and renaissance times women’s dresses were often cut below the breasts as that was fashionable. I don’t care generally about societal norms especially when it comes to inequality between men and women. I don’t want to live like that, I want to live by my own beliefs. People challenging the status quo is the only way attitudes will change. Men’s nipples can equally be erogenous zones for some men, but apparently that’s different.

I don’t believe any body part is INHERENTLY sexual all the time - it’s sexual in a sexual situation. Nudity at a nudist beach isn’t sexual. However many vaginas or dicks are hanging out there they’re just body parts. Topless or even nude sunbathing is just existing. Nudity isn’t illegal unless it’s being done with the intention of offence. Someone sunbathing topless is minding their own business, and any disapproving feelings people have about that are entirely their own issues and the absorption of societal misogyny.

How is it confusing matters? It’s a pretty easy lesson to teach children that adults can decide what they’re comfortable with in regards to their own body, and in situations where people don’t wear many clothes, like a pool, beach or gym changing room, some might want to show more body than others and there’s nothing wrong with that because it’s just a body and we’ve all got one. That’s entirely different from someone asking a child (or unwilling adult, for that matter) to be naked or touching them, which is never OK. If anything it reinforces the autonomy lesson in that they shouldn’t ever let anyone else tell them what to do with their body, but when they’re an adult they have the power and choice to decide what they want to do with it.

FoodCentre · 04/08/2023 11:39

And if a man or woman in a non-sexual nudist environment (or a topless woman at the beach) leaves their clothes off and walks to the market, or to a restaurant, is that still them just existing? They're not having sex, they're not trying to offend, so it must be fine? They're just going about their day.

I'd dispute the idea that naturists/nudists somehow switch off all the sexual attraction when they see a nice pair of boobs as soon as they enter a nudist environment. You can't know that, at all.

Lobelia123 · 04/08/2023 11:41

If your kids went to their friends for tea or to play and then told you their friends mother was walking about with her tits out, I'm almost certain you wouldn't think it was appropriate.
