Just after everyone's opinions. I'm on an all inclusive holiday . Nothing flash . European destination. Hot sunny . 3*. Would you feel offended if a female sunbathes topless at the pool? Just for context I have done , but put bikini top on to go in pool and her drinks . It's literally just going topless when laying on sunbed . More context age range is babies up to 70+ . Lots of different shapes and weights of people . Lots of bellies make and female and lots of big boobs on men. Like I say this is just for context . Just interested in people's opinions. I'm with my husband on holiday .

Is it acceptable to walk down the high street with no top on?

If not, why is it any different to sitting on lying down being topless?

Why are there not topless women on TV during the daytime?

I can imagine if there was a topless presenter on CBeebies the parents would start a riot.

Soggysoggydew · 03/08/2023 23:39

@MavisChunch29 what is actually wrong with sunbathing topless? Do you struggle not to stare at bare breasted women? Does your bloke? Do you find breasts ugly to look at? Or what?

Unless some topless women is rubbing her tits on your nose surely every issue with bare breasts can be avoided by just not looking?

Hopelesscynic · 03/08/2023 23:40

I would absolutely not, for fear of creeps, photos being taken and generally being quite private about my body. And most definitely not at a family hotel pool, out of consideration for parents who may not want their children exposed to random (half)naked bodies. And I am European btw!

wyntersuhn · 03/08/2023 23:41

I wouldn't myself, and I wouldn't be hugely comfortable about someone doing it at a pool. A beach is different, lots more space to spread out.

The high street and the pool are not the same thing. You also wouldn’t walk down the high street bare foot.

Tv presenters are at work. People do tend to wear clothes at work…

You would think so, wouldn't you?

I must be incredibly self absorbed, since in the event that I was lying on a nice beach or by a pool on holiday I would barely even notice other people being there let alone what they were or weren't wearing. I'd have no interest in the ones I did notice, and nor would I expect them to have any interest in looking at me - I see nude women every day in the changing rooms at the gym and ordinary everyday human bodies don't even register.

That said, my eyesight is shit Grin

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 03/08/2023 23:45

My 11 year old son would be mortified if I got my boobs out. I don't think anyone else would care

WandaWonder · 03/08/2023 23:45

It is unsafe but if you want to sure, don't see the point myself and if it is something I need to question don't see the point doing it but no doesn't offend me nor the wrinkles from people who do it

What is actually wrong with your reading comprehension and why are you asking me personal questions?

Same here… people just fade into the background of what I’m doing unless what they are doing is particularly interesting. Like kite surfing or trying to carry an inflatable dingy on their own in the wind. Breasts are not very interesting.

SocksAndTheCity · 03/08/2023 23:49

How is it unsafe, @WandaWonder ? I don't sit in direct sun so I don't burn, but the point of wearing as few clothes as possible outdoors on a nice day is comfort, at least as far as I'm concerned Smile

@MavisChunch29 what personal questions?! You said topless sunbathing is bad/inappropriate and I asked why? That isn’t a personal question.

MavisChunch29 · 03/08/2023 23:53

No I didn't.

Ok, I’ll rephrase my question- why do you think it’s ‘just fucking weird”?

Also, what personal question did I ask?

MavisChunch29 · 04/08/2023 00:10

@Soggysoggydew That was about a particular situation where we were a group of girls on holiday in our 20s and most of the other people near the pool were groups of lads in their 20s. Yes, it would have felt fucking weird to sunbathe topless by the pool - and in any event we had a private roof terrace if we wanted to do that.

Neither did we go on the 18-30s party boat trip the rep wanted us to go on with a bunch of lairy lagered up chavs.

MavisChunch29 · 04/08/2023 00:12

@Soggysoggydew Those personal questions.

ZiriForEver · 04/08/2023 00:20

MavisChunch29 · 03/08/2023 22:43

Not by the pool, not one person has said that is acceptable.

The only place I have ever sunbathed topless was when we had a private roof terrace when I was on holiday with my mates in the 1990s. Obviously didn't want to give any of the groups of lads by the pool a free boob show. Why on earth would you want to do that? Just fucking weird.

I did say so. And I am not the only one, it's actually around 50:50.

Holiday resort pool is obviously a sunbathing place, so it is more similar to beach situation than high street or child TV or other places some used for comparison.
So yes, I see sunbathing topless on the poolside as ok (for the sake of simplicity, let's talk about countries where it is legal)

Why would anyone do that? I suppose because the OP values her tan more than what you consider acceptable. Good for her.

How is that personal?! I was asking why you hold that opinion. I wasn’t asking your bra size or whether you get on with your mum! Literally just why you hold the opinion you do… you chose to state your opinion in an online forum where people are having a discussion- that invites questions about your opinion. That’s why people usually write ‘I think X is the case because of Y’.

oviraptor21 · 04/08/2023 00:22

I would prefer not to have to police where I'm looking so it's a no really from me. I'm not that bothered as long as you're not bothered when I look in your direction.

I wouldn't do it myself as I wouldn't want to be either looked at or potentially surreptitiously photographed by some leery man.

etinaz · 04/08/2023 00:29

HowmuchcanispendatChristmas · 03/08/2023 22:18

Exactly. Why sexualise breasts all the time . They are just part of me and I have no control over what other people think if I'm topless . The point of this thread was to enable a thought provoking discussion from all angles which it's done .

I was with you until this point OP.

Women's bodies - breasts - are and have been sexualised forever. To pretend that the playing field here is level is disingenuous. It's not posters sexualising breast, it's society, media, blah.

There is a context here.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 04/08/2023 00:29

It's our own insecurities that sway our opinion. I'm quite confident in myself so what other women choose to do doesn't bother me one bit. I imagine the posters against are insecure and are petrified of their OH's staring at an attractive, confident woman. That's what it all boils down to really.

MavisChunch29 · 04/08/2023 00:38

My opinion is this:

  • Is anyone else sunbathing topless by the hotel pool?
  • If yes, go ahead, if not, don't.
  • Generally, don't, because it's not something people generally do by shared hotel pools, and in some countries it is definitely not acceptable.
  • Generally, don't, because it's a bad idea to burn any parts of the body, which sensitive and less exposed areas would be and also sunbathe for a long time to get an even tan because of the risk of skin cancer.
  • It might have been more prevalent in the 1980s but then so was smoking and teenage girls appearing topless in a daily newspaper, among other things. Times change. People also know about skin cancer and that some men take any opportunity to take and share images of women and girls for sexual purposes, and that it is much easier to take photos these days.

Do you honestly believe this? That any posters who don't agree are insecure, jealous and 'petrified'? Seriously?

I find your kind of reasoning completely baffling.

Exactly.

Oh they must be jealous. Oh they must be insecure. Oh they must be worried that their partner is staring at other women. Oh they must hate the human body. Oh they must be against breastfeeding.

What a load of crap.
