Climate lockdowns

Jbrown76 · 31/07/2023 20:38

As seen in the media recently, Europe is experiencing extreme heat, fires ect caused by climate change and global warming. It's terrifying. what sort of things can be done, will climate lockdowns help?

Do you think we'll have voluntary or mandatory climate lockdowns? Aka banned from travelling, no flights, cars ect, no red meat, encouraged to walk or cycle,15 minute cities?

When do you think it might or will happen? What will it look/be like? Will you voluntarily lockdown and reduce your carbon footprint? Or does the government habe to mandate climate lockdowns?

That is, quite literally, the opening to a dystopian novel. Given the flak the ULEZ is getting, I don't think it would be supported.

HopelessBlue192 · 31/07/2023 20:41

Hahahahahahaha. Absolutely no to the lot of it.

sashagabadon · 31/07/2023 20:42

It’s been pissing down here the last few weeks!

Wsmi · 31/07/2023 20:42

What is the premise of your question? Do you want climate lockdowns?

Are you one of those that enjoyed the Covid lockdowns so much that you want lockdowns to be the default way of living. Allowed out of the house only for one walk of the day?

How do you suggest climate lockdowns would be paid for? Money borrowing and money printing. That turned out well last time, didn’t it? What exactly is your take or agenda here?

StillPerplexed · 31/07/2023 20:44

I can't see anything like that being popular even if the sky was on fire. But as things get worse, climate-wise, we may well see the replacing of more roads with rail, limiting flights, and expanding renewable power network with a green jobs program. Doesn't have to be individualised and austere.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 31/07/2023 20:44

Do I want it? No
Do I think we will get to a point where we are not allowed the same freedoms we currently have, do to the climate crisis? Yes

HermioneWeasley · 31/07/2023 20:45

Absolutely fucking not. No, no, no. The Uk produces something like 2% of the world’s carbon emissions - there is literally nothing we or our government can do to make a difference

Deloresadores · 31/07/2023 20:45

That’s a giant leap. I think people are waking up to the changes that need to be made nim
nog sure making everyone stay home and confiscating their hamburgers will help.

This post is so odd I wonder if you’re some sort of pro oil bot. It’s like you’re scare mongering. You even have the correct trigger words.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 31/07/2023 20:45

It doesn't have to be something we volunteer for, either. It may well be something that is enforced in the future

Wsmi · 31/07/2023 20:46

Less than 1%

Deloresadores · 31/07/2023 20:46

Not sure what happened with my typos. I’m not sure was what I meant.

Justcallmebebes · 31/07/2023 20:46

Never gonna happen

NuffSaidSam · 31/07/2023 20:47

No, I don't think we'll do anything that will massively inconvenience our lives. We'll just carry on until it's too late.

cruffinsmuffin · 31/07/2023 20:47

No flights, no cars, no red meat?!

Well we wouldn't be able to get to work, and the lovely local farmers would be out of business.

We're as a country so low down the polluting list, even doing every slightly whacky thing in your post wouldn't save the climate.

midgetastic · 31/07/2023 20:47

You’d be surprised. Remember all those begging to be locked down over an illness that would morning harm a vast majority of healthy adults. They couldn’t get enough of it. Never underestimate the power of stupid.

romdowa · 31/07/2023 20:47

I bloody well hope not. I'd rather see the industries that are the largest polluters be sanctioned instead.

lljkk · 31/07/2023 20:48

I think we are fecked as a species, at least with regard to maintaining good quality of life long term, & there is zero political will to stop it happening.

Proofinthepudding · 31/07/2023 20:48

You are on the windup aren't you OP? Don't be so. God damn ridiculous.
I'm convinced certain posters love revelling in misery

Ah but that's industry see? Can't have that suffer, can't make that clean up it's act as it's industry and matters way more than people

Wsmi · 31/07/2023 20:46

Less than 1%

Does that account for the stuff we buy/use from other countries? Like the stuff China makes for us do the emissions from that manufacturing process etc. count as their footprint or ours?

Spendonsend · 31/07/2023 20:49

I dont think in the uk things will get banned, but i think costs of things will rise and the average person will be poorer so they wint be doing it anyway. Like naturally reducing meat and never flying.
I think the rich will just carry on doing what they like.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 31/07/2023 20:49

Justcallmebebes · 31/07/2023 20:46

Never gonna happen

Never? We will never be banned from, say, travelling by plane or car due to emissions? Or have restrictions placed on what we can eat, where we can travel, what we can wear, what fuel we can access? You really can't see a future where that happens?

midgetastic · 31/07/2023 20:49

Can't actually see it would help

There are so many things that could help that could also improve quality of life

SunnyEgg · 31/07/2023 20:49

No but I think insurance for various things will cause changes
