Climate lockdowns

Jbrown76 · 31/07/2023 20:38

As seen in the media recently, Europe is experiencing extreme heat, fires ect caused by climate change and global warming. It's terrifying. what sort of things can be done, will climate lockdowns help?

Do you think we'll have voluntary or mandatory climate lockdowns? Aka banned from travelling, no flights, cars ect, no red meat, encouraged to walk or cycle,15 minute cities?

When do you think it might or will happen? What will it look/be like? Will you voluntarily lockdown and reduce your carbon footprint? Or does the government habe to mandate climate lockdowns?

@Kazzyhoward yeah I’m going to carry all of my nursing gear on the bus 🙄

No one ever seems to be able to answer how those of us who live rurally and need cars are meant to continue to live and work? All these carbon credits, pay per mile nonsense, it’s only going to affect those who genuinely need a car to do their jobs etc, carers, I work in community nursing covering a large rural area and that’s not going to change when they want more and more hospital at home with an already inflating elderly population particularly in this rural area. Actually another area to look at is the immense healthcare waste all those people I visit with chronic leg ulcers some daily and all those bandages being chucked out, diabetic equipment libre sensors etc being changed every fortnight I could go on

If we reserved cars just for those purposes it would have a massive benefit still.

And more buses and trains for people who don't need cars per se, just to get from a to b.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 02/08/2023 16:42

@Begsthequestion true but would people go for that? Certain people allowed cars when others aren’t? I also worry that those making the rules will just tar everyone with the same brush regardless of where they live

No one is suggesting that no one gets to drive in a car ever. But we should be conserving and being more mindful of what we do have. Without a doubt, a massive proportion of what we 'waste' fuel on is discretionary. I have friends with lots of time on their hands who pop into town (a 30 k round trip) for no good reason, see 30 cars in the car park at away matches which might be 30 km away with no one car sharing, children being driven to school by stay at home parents when they are less than 2kms from the school. Or people choosing to buy houses a one hour commute from where they work because they have to have a 5 bedroomed house for their 4 person family. These are all choices and sadly their is little incentive other than people's own consciences- and budgets in some cases - to do otherwise. Our lives, almost all of our lives are hugely wasteful on the whole. We should at least admit that even if we choose to do nothing about it..

Yeah, I know, but the "preachy people" don't think of the real life practicalities.

No one complains that ambulances get the right of way on any road, or that some doctors have flashing blue lights to get to a patient quicker.

I don't know if many people particularly enjoy obeying must government policies but it's part of the social contract and we're not exactly a population that protests much.

So what's your real life/practical answer to that? How are you going to persuade people to use cars less for discretionary/unnecessary car trips?

The lazy/simple answer is to charge more, increase fuel prices, introduce congestion/emission charges, but that just punishes the poor and is merely a minor inconvenience to the rich. So, basically, a flawed strategy.

So, come on, how do you do it fairly without bankrupting the poor who need their cars for work, disabilities, etc.?

Can't you think of anything yourself? C'mon. Don't be lazy.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 02/08/2023 17:01

@Begsthequestion the be fair my car is mainly used for work and odd days out at the weekends. My groceries get delivered by Asda etc so maybe I’m ok 😄

MariaVT65 · 02/08/2023 17:06

You’re talking as though all that would be simple and have little impact.

I mostly use my car for short trips, as my son’s nursery isn’t walking distance. I mostly wfh. But if I had to take him and pick him up on the bus, that would add more time to my day, when i already work, and would mean I’d have to pay more childcare hours, which would price me out of work.

No way in hell I’d obey it anyway after the hell of the pandemic.

Not sure that’s all accurate. Most of my friends (in the South) have long commutes because they can’t afford to live near where they work. And it’s not always easy to just ‘find a job nearer your home’

Well I am talking about where I live in Ireland so I know it's not exactly comparable. And of course there are always exceptions but the problem is that everyone is so busy making exceptions for themselves (including me!) that the overall total of fossil fuels burned/resources wasted just keeps getting higher and certainly isn't getting any lower. Every day examples....I really need a holiday because I've had such a shit year, I don't want my child to feel different so I'll suck it up and do the 20 bags of plastic tat in the party bags, I really enjoy this new hobby but its 20km away, oh well, I want to feel that blast of heat when I walk in the door in winter.... and on it goes. Vanishingly small numbers of people genuinely live in a way that reflects the crisis we face. I just wish people would admit that even if they don't do anything about it..

We all know that peoples' actions are the problem, but what is the solution? What solution will start to solve it without impoverishing the already poor? We need solutions to change the behaviour of people who can change their behaviour, not blanket bans/taxes, etc that will hit the poorest/hard workers most.

I don't have any answers, or at least none that are politically possible currently. But I do believe that being honest with ourselves and with the reality of the situation overall is at least a start..

I would vote doe reforestation of areas which are not used for agriculture atm.

I can spot types of post v similar to the Covid lockdown ones. You know, the ones about "needless gallivanting" and "selfish" coffees out... and then declaring that in the future, we will all be spending the vast majority of time in our homes so we'd better get used to the idea. "No more popping to Mum's for a cup of tea, no more big family Christmases... it will all be on Zoom".

I don't know if these people really feel this way, or whether they get off on putting the frighteners up people and stressing them out. Or if it's an attempt to "normalise" extreme positions.

Either way, I wish they'd stop.

What textbook did you copy that load of drivel from.

Sheesh, I'm convinced some people won't be happy until we're back living in caves.

Clearly just regurgitating what they read on Twitter.
