New friend - odd?

I recently made friends with a woman and I’m starting to think she’s a bit off but maybe I’m being judgemental??

Anyway we arranged to go for a walk yesterday morning in the park and then go for a coffee. Half hour before we were due to meet its pissing it down so I assumed the walk was off … I messaged her and put “have you seen the weather? What do you want to do?” And she replied with “park? It might stop soon and I don’t mind the rain”. Ok, neither do I but it was really coming down.

So anyway I set off, arrived in car park and it’s now torrential rain, really hammering off the car. I messaged her from my car to ask if she was there yet and she replied saying she was sat on a bench and she’ll walk up??!! I couldn’t even see out of my car window!! So I put my rain coat off and went to meet her. She walked up absolutely wet through, no coat on, rain literally streaming down her face, sandals on. We walked for a bit and then she said we should sit and have a coffee … great … expect she meant get a coffee from a kiosk and sit on a bench!!? I said I didn’t think that was a good idea due to the torrential rain we were currently stood in. We carried on walking for a bit, she fell over, finally got back into my car absolutely soaked and she is stood next to my window wanting to chat!! I told her to get in the car!

isn’t all this a bit weird or am I just a wimp with the rain?

Don't drink coffee in the rain if it's filling up faster than you can drink it.

Batalax · 31/07/2023 20:32

Next tim just say you’d rather not. Suggest something else and ask her if she’d rather do that or leave it till another time. Problem sorted. You’ll soon find out if she just likes the rain or if she’s actually just weird.

What was her chat like!

LuckySantangelo35 · 31/07/2023 20:32

She behaved weirdly, end of

WonderingWanda · 31/07/2023 20:34

I think I would've said 'Crikey, you're already soaked, Where's your raincoat?' When I first saw her and then taken her for an indoor coffee to dry out.

I love the rain, whenever it rains really heavily I stand in the back garden in it with my face up to the sky like a right weirdo. I think it’s from living in an extremely hot country for years where the rain was a relief. I still do it now I’m home but I’ve always enjoyed the rain and would happily walk in heavy rain and rarely wear a coat…I didn’t realise what weirdo everyone must think I am 😅oh well.

I adore heavy rain too. I run outside in my garden in storms and jump in the puddles and I don't like wearing sweaty rain jackets either, if it's warm (over, say, 17°C), I'd rather not wear one and just get a little wet. I love the feeling of the rain on my skin.

But, I've learned that the world does not treat autistic weirdos like me very kindly, so I pretend to be just like everyone else so I don't have to feel judged... And I wear the coat and feel sad inside. 😥

WonderingWanda · 31/07/2023 20:35

Also, yes a bit odd but give her a chance.

I love that. I'm going to write it down for when I next need it!
I can see it being framed and placed in the living room so I can look at it daily.
😁😁😁

NY152 · 31/07/2023 20:38

Thanks this has made my day😂

Lavender14 · 31/07/2023 20:39

Rain doesn't bother me either but I probably wouldn't have expected someone else to go along with it. I'm guessing she was really keen to meet you and it just doesn't bother her. Next time it's like that you take the initiative and suggest a coffee shop instead?

Vettrianofan · 31/07/2023 20:40

Water doesn't hurt😂 I was out walking this morning for an hour and a half in heavy rain in woodland, with the dog and all my DC. We were all appropriately dressed for the weather. It isn't a big deal for some of us 🤷🏻 I have also walked out in the rain with sandals on when on my own on pavement walks.

I need outdoors for my sanity rain or shine 😆

Hibiscrubbed · 31/07/2023 20:41

Oceanus · 31/07/2023 20:28

@Hibiscrubbed I'm always one step away from a respiratory infection since March. A little bit of cold (and being poorly dressed for the weather) and I'm sick again. Being cold and wet, ahhhh I wouldn't make it, I know I wouldn't, surely I'd get pneumonia. The PJs of doom would come out.

Best steer clear of me, I’m in pjs of doom right now. With pneumonia! While pregnant. 😆 I’ve not deployed the bathrobe yet. It’s a spot warm, if wet. I’m not allowed any actually effective antibiotics so I’m just on weeks and weeks of amoxicillin. I don’t actually feel too bad, considering. Much better now.

Picked it up from a relative who’s a respiratory consultant. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Purplepinkfairy · 31/07/2023 20:42

I find the fact she wasn't dressed appropriately very odd.....

Merryoldgoat · 31/07/2023 20:42

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/07/2023 16:55

You're a wimp with the rain, no one will melt if they get rained on.

People always say this.

It’s still HORRID - no one is saying never go out in the rain - just going for a recreational walk in pelting rain is not fun.

Oceanus · 31/07/2023 20:49

@Hibiscrubbed Oh, darn it! That really effing sucks. I hope you feel better soon. I've had 3(ish) respiratory infections in a short time, so I can sympathise. It effing sucks it happened to you at such a sensitive time. Fuck pneumonia! Your relative better give you something massive and super posh for you birthday, Christmas, Easter and when the baby's born!
Fuck pneumonia!

Barrell · 31/07/2023 20:51

Some people are in proper denial when it rains in the summer. It was blowing a gale and throwing it down the other day and I drove past loads of people in shorts and summer attire, getting drenched.

Valerians · 31/07/2023 21:22

Soft play 😭

monpetitlapin · 31/07/2023 21:28

Ppbbwwt · 31/07/2023 18:57

I went through a soft play circuit once as an adult (did have my 6 year old nephew with me though) and got stuck in between two soft pillars. Really embarrassing and my nephew had to go and get a member of staff to get me out! Anyway, yes it is odd to want to sit on a wet bench in the pouring rain and drink coffee. Doesn't mean she's not a nice person though - maybe arrange to meet up again, at a cafe for tea and cake or something? (Not at soft play!)

That was my favourite episode of Peppa Pig too. 🤣

Abitlosttoday · 31/07/2023 21:34

FromAustin · 31/07/2023 16:56

Do you know if she has other friends or family? I would think she’s possibly really desperate for company.

Or maybe she’s read about what munsnetters post about ‘flaky friends’ so is taking it to extremes and will not even cancel in very bad weather. 😂

I think you should have just insisted that it was postponed or that you went somewhere indoors.

I agree - a bit desperate for company so prepared to get drenched in the pursuit of connection.

BrunoMarzipan · 31/07/2023 21:39

I don't know, sorry OP. But I did actually laugh when you said she fell over! Can you describe it? Was it slippy grass? I'm one of those weirdos that can't help laughing when people fall over 😂🙈

collectorsedition · 31/07/2023 21:41

”I’m not made of sugar. I’m not made of sugar.”

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/07/2023 21:45

Perhaps she didn't want to appear FlakyGrin
I keep laughing at the thought of her falling over in sandals
Sounds like an episode of Miranda

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 31/07/2023 22:37

But it's different when you're determinedly plodding along with dog and DCs who need some fresh air. I've done it with a friend when our babies were in prams and would only sleep on the move.

Two friends lapping a park, having a conversation while blinking drops out of their eyes and then deliberately sitting on a wet bench when they could be sitting in a café, or even outside one with an awning if they wanted fresh air... it's a strange choice.

LunchBoxPolice · 31/07/2023 23:23

I haven’t laughed out loud at a thread in ages, this is cracking me up
“she fell over” 😂

CherrySocks · 31/07/2023 23:30

Very strange. Even if she has some weird attitude to torrential rain, she would surely understand that most other people prefer not to get soaked.

TyrannasaurusJex · 01/08/2023 00:10

This is so stressful. Am desperately trying to get 6 week old to sleep but am physically shaking with contained laughter at this absolute car crash of a thread. I smirked at "she fell over" but fully lost the plot at "soft play" 😂
Ah this is the sort of thing that truly makes me proud to be British.
