New friend - odd?

I recently made friends with a woman and I’m starting to think she’s a bit off but maybe I’m being judgemental??

Anyway we arranged to go for a walk yesterday morning in the park and then go for a coffee. Half hour before we were due to meet its pissing it down so I assumed the walk was off … I messaged her and put “have you seen the weather? What do you want to do?” And she replied with “park? It might stop soon and I don’t mind the rain”. Ok, neither do I but it was really coming down.

So anyway I set off, arrived in car park and it’s now torrential rain, really hammering off the car. I messaged her from my car to ask if she was there yet and she replied saying she was sat on a bench and she’ll walk up??!! I couldn’t even see out of my car window!! So I put my rain coat off and went to meet her. She walked up absolutely wet through, no coat on, rain literally streaming down her face, sandals on. We walked for a bit and then she said we should sit and have a coffee … great … expect she meant get a coffee from a kiosk and sit on a bench!!? I said I didn’t think that was a good idea due to the torrential rain we were currently stood in. We carried on walking for a bit, she fell over, finally got back into my car absolutely soaked and she is stood next to my window wanting to chat!! I told her to get in the car!

isn’t all this a bit weird or am I just a wimp with the rain?

No wellies and I never wear shorts. I hate heavy rain and make no apology for it. Who wants to go for a walk in a deluge when it's not necessary?

Me! I'm another one who loves a good walk in the rain. But I would wear a raincoat and have an umbrella. I'd wear wellies probably but I might go for sandals if it wasn't cold.

🤣🤣 I've got a few bonkers friends like this! Where I live it's considered 'hardy' to shrug off the rain!! I think the saying round here (kind of middle class area where no-one wants to admit privilege, so they try and act hard!!!) is "no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!"

Fuck that!! I hate the rain and always decline a 'walk' even if it's only drizzle!! 🤣 I don't care if Orlando camped out for 3 nights in hail on his school trip, or Jemima did her duke of Edinburgh in a blizzard! Good for them. Teenagers are mad. However, I'm not up for a mum chat in a rain coat and waterproofs! Costa is much more appealing 👍

As a fellow downpour avoider, I'll join you! 😁

I'm really enjoying an image of two women turning up at soft play together. One bedraggled and soaked through to her sandals, and one dressed like she just disembarked from a fishing trawler

ibblebibbledibble · 31/07/2023 16:58

I find it weirder that you just blindly went along with it all 🤣

This was my first thought too!

I love the rain and would be happy walking in it (not sure about sitting on a bench in it) but if I didn’t I would just say let’s meet up in a cafe or something.

Not RTFT so I may not be the first but...is she Drew Barrymore?

The start of a comedy sketch there!

I would have suggested soft play or coffee in a cafe rather than cracking on with the park plan. You're both a bit odd but people often are when they're figuring one another out! We all do odd or awkward things from time to time.

Why the fuck would two grown women go to soft play? That would be a lot more odd…

FiddleLeaf · 31/07/2023 19:50

It’s quite a funny image. Why meet in the park like teenagers and not a lovely coffee shop… in the dry?

Other than her keenness for sogginess, do you like her?

chaosmaker · 31/07/2023 19:56

@BeelziBob she sounds brilliant, if you didn't want to go out in the rain then you should have said when it didn't seem to worry her at all. I think she just really likes the rain :)

Duckskitbank · 31/07/2023 19:59

Hilarious! I’m picturing Andie Macdowell

”Is it still raining? I hadn’t noticed.”

Verystressedsenmum · 31/07/2023 20:01

i also can’t get my head around the fact you went along with it . I like the rain too I often run in the rain but I dress appropriately.
all you had to say was it’s a bit wet let’s do the walk another day & let’s meet for coffee in a cafe .

ArabeIIaScott · 31/07/2023 20:03

After 'hygge' and 'coorie', the next new lifestyle trend is from Scotland:

Pishindoon involves meeting friends to walk in the pouring, galloping rain, dressed in suitable clothing, wellie boots, and a beatific smile, feeling gratitude for the soothing background music of rain puddling underfoot, appreciating the interesting phenomenon of raisin fingers, and gently humming a bit of Gene Kelly as you go.

That is weird!
Im like you and don’t mind walking in the rain if I’ve got a coat on so would have carried on with the planned meet and walk once she suggested that but I’d have definitely been freaked out by her standing around non plussed in sandals and no jacket and suggesting you both sit outside in a downpour to have a coffee!
Did you say anything?

I wonder if she’s really desperate for company?

Give her a second chance maybe but I’d certainly be a bit on the lookout for other odd behaviour.

Completely agree with the above. I don’t mind the rain and would have come out dressed in rain coat, rain boots and umbrella - although I draw the line at really torrential rain.

I would give the friendship a chance but be prepared for fact she might be a little odd…

No friendship is worth pneumonia for.

Why would being wet cause pneumonia? It’s a bacterial or viral infection of the lungs…

You also can’t ‘catch yer death’.

haven't RTFT, but i assumed OP was a man.
has it been verified either way?

You're a wimp with the rain, no one will melt if they get rained on.

who wants to go round looking like a drowned rat?!

they didnt have kids with them , why would they go to soft play?

Garman · 31/07/2023 20:24

Soft play 😂😂

Meerkatdog · 31/07/2023 20:25

Sounds like my kind of friend. Nothing wrong with a bit of rain.

Pickledpigeon · 31/07/2023 20:27

Have you arranged to meet up again op?

Oceanus · 31/07/2023 20:28

@Hibiscrubbed I'm always one step away from a respiratory infection since March. A little bit of cold (and being poorly dressed for the weather) and I'm sick again. Being cold and wet, ahhhh I wouldn't make it, I know I wouldn't, surely I'd get pneumonia. The PJs of doom would come out.

I've never laughed out loud at a post on here before - proper belly laughing here. Thank you!
