New friend - odd?

I recently made friends with a woman and I’m starting to think she’s a bit off but maybe I’m being judgemental??

Anyway we arranged to go for a walk yesterday morning in the park and then go for a coffee. Half hour before we were due to meet its pissing it down so I assumed the walk was off … I messaged her and put “have you seen the weather? What do you want to do?” And she replied with “park? It might stop soon and I don’t mind the rain”. Ok, neither do I but it was really coming down.

So anyway I set off, arrived in car park and it’s now torrential rain, really hammering off the car. I messaged her from my car to ask if she was there yet and she replied saying she was sat on a bench and she’ll walk up??!! I couldn’t even see out of my car window!! So I put my rain coat off and went to meet her. She walked up absolutely wet through, no coat on, rain literally streaming down her face, sandals on. We walked for a bit and then she said we should sit and have a coffee … great … expect she meant get a coffee from a kiosk and sit on a bench!!? I said I didn’t think that was a good idea due to the torrential rain we were currently stood in. We carried on walking for a bit, she fell over, finally got back into my car absolutely soaked and she is stood next to my window wanting to chat!! I told her to get in the car!

isn’t all this a bit weird or am I just a wimp with the rain?

My autistic sibling does things like this all the time. Things that seem totally logical to her and absolutely bizarre to everyone else. E.g. Going to a wedding barefoot, or having a nap in the middle of the room everyone is socialising in, or spending the night in a hotel lobby instead of booking a room. I would strongly suspect autism.

That took longer than normal

Wonderering · 01/08/2023 00:31

This post made me laugh so much, thinking of her just sitting there on the bench waiting for you and acting like the rain isn't a thing at all. Literally sounds like something you'd see in a comedy! It is odd, but as PP have said, it's ultimately harmless.

JaffacakeJanine · 01/08/2023 00:54

Giggling like a maniac at this thread, I need the next installment pronto, OP please don't stop being friends with this person, it's Mumsnet GOLD

NewName122 · 01/08/2023 00:57

Op has anyone suggested soft play 🤣 definitely odd.

NewName122 · 01/08/2023 01:01

I'm laid in bed, it's 1am, and I am literally laughing out loud reading this hilarious thread 🤣🤣

Someoneonlyyouknow · 01/08/2023 01:29

Added to my watch list.

If it is a possible romantic meeting it makes slightly more sense.

I want to know more about the falling over, did you both politely pretend it didn't happen?

I think OP drew the line at outdoor coffee and would the person who suggested Soft Play please explain

Catsmere · 01/08/2023 01:34

I'd have cancelled, no way am I driving anywhere I don't have to in heavy rain! As for walking, yeah that's fine if it's lighter rain, but sitting in it? Drinking coffee in it? No, nor would I have agreed. But then I don't know anyone strange enough to suggest it, so wouldn't have been caught out by the suggestion.

Catsmere · 01/08/2023 01:54

Purplepinkfairy · 31/07/2023 20:42

I find the fact she wasn't dressed appropriately very odd.....

Yes, especially the sandals in rain. Horrible thought as far as I'm concerned!

BeelziBob · 01/08/2023 06:43

Thanks everyone for the replies.
To clear up a few points:

We met at a dog show
We’ve met up before and I’ve always thought she was a bit “quirky” - she’s done and said odd things previous times we’ve met but this really was the taking the biscuit! I do love the rain but sandals and sitting with a coffee on a bench in torrential rain? The cup would have been full of rain water within 5 minutes! 😂
I went along with the walk as I really don’t mind the rain, however when it gets that heavy I have my limits but by time it got torrential, I was already there and I knew she was sat in it waiting for me. I had a raincoat with me so thought what the hell … however once we actually met up it just got weirder

She fell as her foot slipped out of her sandal. She actually sat on the floor (in thick mud water!) to check her sandal for a few seconds after she fell. I asked her if she was ok and she said she was but was concerned she’d broken her sandal!?

We didn’t and have never been to soft play.

I've only read your posts OP, but did you not comment on how strange it was to be walking in such torrential rain with no coat on? I mean, I can kind of see why you still went for the walk, it is just water afterall, but I would have been laughing about the strangeness of it all myself.

Catsmere · 01/08/2023 07:19

Tbh she sounds more bizarre than quirky, OP! I guess though the main question is, are you enjoying each other's company?

Zonder · 01/08/2023 07:43

Is she good company apart from the odd stuff? If so I would meet up again but make a firm suggestion of something that you have set the boundaries for next time.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 01/08/2023 08:01

Having an autistic family member I've met and socialised with many nero diverse people through a group he belongs to and I too wonder if this is the answer as you say she is known for being quirky. Over the years I have learnt to embrace the difference, I now ask myself when something odd happens, does this matter, if the answer is no then I continue with the unusual situation and ignore any looks from other people. If the answer is yes, I'm getting cold and wet and I don't like it, I say that and state I will be moving to a cafe instead and my friend is welcome to join me if they wish.

JustDanceAddict · 01/08/2023 08:04

I’d walk in drizzle but not torrential rain, I would’ve suggested meeting in a cafe instead. It’s what I do with friends if bad weather forecast.
Def wouldn’t walk in torrential rain, no/one stays dry in that even in suitable clothing.

Gsyllama · 01/08/2023 08:18

Hard to know, but my mum and I have very different rain levels. She will say "its POURING, you MUST take a coat" when I think "it's drizzle, I will skip the coat"

Talkingtothetrees · 01/08/2023 09:39

HAHAHAHA she sounds excellent tbh

Coffeetree · 01/08/2023 11:12

This thread is amazing. She sat in the mud!

Next time take her to soft play.

user123212 · 01/08/2023 11:43

She was testing you!! 😂

10HailMarys · 01/08/2023 11:51

We met at a dog show

I have to say… this does very much chime with my experience of a lot of people who are really into dog shows 🤣

She definitely sounds like an oddball but possibly also highly entertaining. I think I’d have been crying with laughter at the point where she was sitting down in a muddy puddle after falling over.

I bet if you did suggest a grown-ups-only trip to soft play, she’d be up for it 🤣

danblack87 · 01/08/2023 11:51

I think the point here is that you went along with it!! Who is more weird? I would have put the 'meet up' off or suggested 'driving to the nearest coffee shop for a chat'. She might think you were weird not suggesting just that. Perhaps she thought you would invite her into the car rather than her trying to speak to you through the window!!! LOL

10HailMarys · 01/08/2023 11:55

coxesorangepippin · 31/07/2023 18:57

This thread does have under currents of snapped and farted, I have to admit

I like to imagine the rain-loving friend probably trumped as she fell over, at the very least

TheBerry · 01/08/2023 12:15

Lol is she a bit of a free spirit type?

She sounds mental but as long as she’s nice and you like her then it doesn’t matter.

Just maybe be a bit more assertive about what activities you do.

runfly · 01/08/2023 12:26

If I did not know I had not met up with any friends I would think this was me.
I am neurodivergent and me and dc went for a walk in the torrential rain last week specifically because dc wanted to. I was absolutely soaked through and I also slipped in the mud. The rain does not bother me at all but people who saw us on the way back looked horrified.

I fully embrace that I am odd and quirky and would have just been grateful for the company so would have been happy to have taken the suggestion of somewhere else but I think you would need to suggest this first.

GalileoHumpkins · 31/07/2023 17:21

Would two adults want to go to soft play on their own?

😂

LuckySantangelo35 · 31/07/2023 20:18

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

no she’s not
who wants to go round looking like a drowned rat?!

Apparently the 145 people who voted that OP is being unreasonable 😂.

I love walking but not in torrential rain.
