New friend - odd?

BeelziBob · 31/07/2023 16:50

I recently made friends with a woman and I’m starting to think she’s a bit off but maybe I’m being judgemental??

Anyway we arranged to go for a walk yesterday morning in the park and then go for a coffee. Half hour before we were due to meet its pissing it down so I assumed the walk was off … I messaged her and put “have you seen the weather? What do you want to do?” And she replied with “park? It might stop soon and I don’t mind the rain”. Ok, neither do I but it was really coming down.

So anyway I set off, arrived in car park and it’s now torrential rain, really hammering off the car. I messaged her from my car to ask if she was there yet and she replied saying she was sat on a bench and she’ll walk up??!! I couldn’t even see out of my car window!! So I put my rain coat off and went to meet her. She walked up absolutely wet through, no coat on, rain literally streaming down her face, sandals on. We walked for a bit and then she said we should sit and have a coffee … great … expect she meant get a coffee from a kiosk and sit on a bench!!? I said I didn’t think that was a good idea due to the torrential rain we were currently stood in. We carried on walking for a bit, she fell over, finally got back into my car absolutely soaked and she is stood next to my window wanting to chat!! I told her to get in the car!

isn’t all this a bit weird or am I just a wimp with the rain?

I think it might be the bewildering situation of you and your friend being... different.

Are you not ok with that? I mean, people aren't odd just because they're not the same as you. You can just say 'I'm not comfortable with this' if you're not comfortable.

MrsHsGirl · 31/07/2023 18:35

I am absolutely hysterical at this thread - the casual mention of her falling over in the rain has me in stitches.

You're not judgemental OP, she's mad as a box of frogs!

I have yet to encounter a towel that dries clothing adequately.....

do you not have a raincoat, wellies and shorts for under the raincoat?

MrsHsGirl · 31/07/2023 18:36

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 31/07/2023 17:53

🤣 the idea of her falling over is making me laugh more than it probably should. How did she fall? Did she just jump back up again and pretend it hadn't happened?

Agree more info needed 😂😂😂

Soonenough · 31/07/2023 18:36

Drunk ?

ibblebibbledibble · 31/07/2023 16:58

I find it weirder that you just blindly went along with it all 🤣

This. It’s not my idea of fun to sit on a bench in torrential rain either but why would you not just say no?

Maiden2021 · 31/07/2023 18:40

Is this a 'friend' or love 'date' interest?

Oohmissus · 31/07/2023 18:40

Is soft play a euphemism?

Someoneonlyyouknow · 31/07/2023 18:41

Smallceramicfrog · 31/07/2023 17:59

I love the rain, whenever it rains really heavily I stand in the back garden in it with my face up to the sky like a right weirdo. I think it’s from living in an extremely hot country for years where the rain was a relief. I still do it now I’m home but I’ve always enjoyed the rain and would happily walk in heavy rain and rarely wear a coat…I didn’t realise what weirdo everyone must think I am 😅oh well.

Have you recently met a new friend for a walk in a park? She was a bit odd, complained about a light shower, and wouldn't stay for coffee.

AtomicBlondeRose · 31/07/2023 18:41

I refuse to believe anyone actually likes being out in the pouring rain. Sitting and drinking a coffee in a downpour for example is just weird and all the MNers who fall over themselves to say they’d love it are, at best, exaggerating a lot - hence why during the rain, seating areas outside cafes are empty and the inside is full. And I’ve never seen anyone sitting drinking coffee on a bench in torrential rain. Leaning against a wall trying to shelter under an overhang maybe!

And I’ve been out during the rain today on a day out. The bit when it was raining on me I did not enjoy, despite being in a waterproof jacket etc. It was annoying, drippy, my bag all got wet - who LIKES that?

queenofthebooks87 · 31/07/2023 18:42

The comedy of this thread is exactly what I need today. Imagining the confused look on the OP's face, followed by the casual reference to the new friend falling over had me in stitches. Then the suggestion for two adults to go to soft play sent me over the edge...you would have to be completely psychotic to want to enter the hell on earth that is soft play without a child 😂

Laiste · 31/07/2023 18:44

No. Sorry, that's bloody strange!

And - why did you go along with it?!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 31/07/2023 18:45

Why would two adults, presumably without any kids in tow, go to soft play?

She sounds daft and you sound dafter for going along with it OP!

LardoBurrows · 31/07/2023 18:49

She is probably a Geordie. They are well hard and don't believe in coats.
I expect you are a southern softie Op.

threecupsofteaminimum · 31/07/2023 18:50

An Icelandic friend of mine would find this a wonderful idea, it's possibly a cultural difference, I wouldn't have gone cos I don't particularly like being in rain.

It's odd that you couldn't find it within yourself to be honest with her at the time. I don't mean to be horrible but perhaps this friendship isn't for the long stretch.

Liv999 · 31/07/2023 18:50

Yes very odd, she must be completely bonkers or desperate for company, or both

BadNomad · 31/07/2023 18:51

Once you are completely drenched, you don't even feel the rain anymore. Your problem was you were half-dry. Next time, leave your coat behind and become one with nature.

This doesn't make sense. She could have had OP's company indoors.

Emmamoo89 · 31/07/2023 18:54

🤣🤣

LightSpeeds · 31/07/2023 18:56

She fell over 😂

JudgeRudy · 31/07/2023 18:57

It's not 'average' but it's hardly worth starting a thread. At most I'd have mentioned it fo my friend/husband later that day. Does she have a car? People that don't are quite used to being out in all weather's. Most just get on with it. Then there's a considerable amount of people who work outside in all weathers. I'm quite a warm person. I generally wear less clothing than others. I can't actually remember the last time ivwore a jumper or cardigan. If I was going out straight from the walk I might reconsider but the idea of a walk for many is to get fresh air. You'll have got that and it's not been cold for a while.
Each to their own though, so just make it clear you really dislike getting wet (or cold etc). I think it's odder that you went out, considering how you feel.

coxesorangepippin · 31/07/2023 18:57

This thread does have under currents of snapped and farted, I have to admit

She said she didn't mind the rain though...

swayingstreetlamp · 31/07/2023 18:57

Wet weather chicken 😂😂

Ppbbwwt · 31/07/2023 18:57

I went through a soft play circuit once as an adult (did have my 6 year old nephew with me though) and got stuck in between two soft pillars. Really embarrassing and my nephew had to go and get a member of staff to get me out! Anyway, yes it is odd to want to sit on a wet bench in the pouring rain and drink coffee. Doesn't mean she's not a nice person though - maybe arrange to meet up again, at a cafe for tea and cake or something? (Not at soft play!)
