New friend - odd?

I recently made friends with a woman and I’m starting to think she’s a bit off but maybe I’m being judgemental??

Anyway we arranged to go for a walk yesterday morning in the park and then go for a coffee. Half hour before we were due to meet its pissing it down so I assumed the walk was off … I messaged her and put “have you seen the weather? What do you want to do?” And she replied with “park? It might stop soon and I don’t mind the rain”. Ok, neither do I but it was really coming down.

So anyway I set off, arrived in car park and it’s now torrential rain, really hammering off the car. I messaged her from my car to ask if she was there yet and she replied saying she was sat on a bench and she’ll walk up??!! I couldn’t even see out of my car window!! So I put my rain coat off and went to meet her. She walked up absolutely wet through, no coat on, rain literally streaming down her face, sandals on. We walked for a bit and then she said we should sit and have a coffee … great … expect she meant get a coffee from a kiosk and sit on a bench!!? I said I didn’t think that was a good idea due to the torrential rain we were currently stood in. We carried on walking for a bit, she fell over, finally got back into my car absolutely soaked and she is stood next to my window wanting to chat!! I told her to get in the car!

isn’t all this a bit weird or am I just a wimp with the rain?

It's not 'average' but it's hardly worth starting a thread

^

Absolutely the opposite!! It's threads like these that bring out MN's finest

Coffeetree · 31/07/2023 18:59

It sounds like you were both trying to style it out. Like she's there in her sandals and no jacket too embarrassed to say, "I didn't want to flake so I just ran out with no coat and chanced the weather!" And you too embarrassed to say "Get in the car, daft thing, we're going to a cafe!"

CurlewKate · 31/07/2023 19:01

I think I might be like her in this warm rain. But I'm not sure I'd expect anyone else to want to join me! Why didn't you just say "Not for me! How about meeting in the cafe?"

TeleTropes · 31/07/2023 17:31

I think if the OP had suggested soft play for two adults then her friend would have been the one (rightly) making a MN post about her odd friend who rearranged a walk to soft play 😂

This thread is gloriously bonkers. The OP going along with sitting in the torrential rain drinking coffee was strange enough.
But the suggestion of soft play for 2 adults as a reasonable alternative is just class😂

I love the rain, whenever it rains really heavily I stand in the back garden in it with my face up to the sky like a right weirdo. I think it’s from living in an extremely hot country for years where the rain was a relief. I still do it now I’m home but I’ve always enjoyed the rain and would happily walk in heavy rain and rarely wear a coat…I didn’t realise what weirdo everyone must think I am 😅oh well.

You didn’t realise that was unusual behaviour until today? Really?

There’s no harm in it, but the lack of awareness is much odder than the actual actions.

WeeksintheSun · 31/07/2023 19:04

OP, tell us more about when she fell over 🤣
I think it’s odd behaviour myself but each to their own I guess. I would be worried that if I met her on a hot day, she would turn up wearing a duvet🥵🥵

Oohmissus · 31/07/2023 18:40

Is soft play a euphemism?

It sounds like a code for something kinky someone would put in a dating app:
"I like poetry, museums, dinning out, walking in the rain followed by soft play "

Agree more info needed 😂😂😂

Agree! Update needed.

I love rain and have no problems walking or gardening in it. But it is weird that she had no waterproof or umbrella. And that she didn't have empathy for you; I am well aware that my proclivity for precipitation is not shared by most people.

What age is she? Could she be vulnerable or early dementia or something like that?

PousseyNotMoira · 31/07/2023 19:07

ivykaty44 · 31/07/2023 18:35

do you not have a raincoat, wellies and shorts for under the raincoat?

Raincoat, wellies…and shorts?

This thread. 🤣

IseeNarcPeople · 31/07/2023 19:08

She sounds perfectly same to me I think she might be my soul mate.
Ask her if she likes pina coladas ?

Bigjamsandwich · 31/07/2023 19:09

I don’t know why but this is making me laugh far more than it should 😂 Definitely reminds me of a scene in a sitcom where two British people are defiantly having a cup of tea on a park bench and partaking in civilised conversation despite the increasingly terrible weather. Severe hurricane at the end and dignified conversation/tea drinking carries on 🌧️ ☔️

CitizenofGotham · 31/07/2023 19:09

That is a bit bonkers but I wouldn't let it cloud your judgement of her, if you like her otherwise.

"She is stood next to my window wanting to chat" made me laugh out loud though, imagining her banging on the window, rain running down her face while you're posting on here on your phone 😁

GameOverBoys · 31/07/2023 19:11

Was she from Manchester?

Imsureitsprobablymebut · 31/07/2023 19:11

Mad as a bag of frogs.

Or maybe an actual frog…..

Hawkins009 · 31/07/2023 19:11

Military training perhaps

WeeksintheSun · 31/07/2023 19:12

🤣🤣 oh dear me. I am crying with laughter. Sorry OP…

I can’t stop laughing at this thread. Literally crying 😂😭. Thank you OP and brilliant mumsnetters for brightening my evening.

Tara24 · 31/07/2023 19:14

This thread is so British.

The lashing rain in summer.

The two 'i don't want to say what I really think' women skirting around any potential awkwardness or faux Pas. One sat on a bench in the torrential rain, the other willing to drive and meet the friend.

The awkward chat by the car.

Love it.

We are all mad. 🇬🇧

WhichEllie · 31/07/2023 19:15

What on earth. 😂

“have you seen the weather? What do you want to do?”

Is this really what you sent? What an odd text! Why would you ask “Have you seen the weather?” if it had been pouring? Does she live underground? Was there a risk that she hadn’t noticed the torrential downpour? It just seems so bitchy. 😂

Anyway, you’re unreasonable. The better text to send was “It’s too wet for the walk so let’s meet at [coffee shop] at [time] instead. We can save the park for a nicer day.” And then if she actually is a weirdo and still wanted a walk you could just insist on rescheduling.

Fairyhouses · 31/07/2023 19:15

LardoBurrows · 31/07/2023 18:49

She is probably a Geordie. They are well hard and don't believe in coats.
I expect you are a southern softie Op.

My girlfriend is a geordie and is a right softie with cold/wet weather!

OP this thread is funny.

But I think one of the oddest things about it is why you didn't say 'I don't fancy a walk in this weather-can we reschedule/go to a cafe/pub instead?'

She does sound a bit quirky but It's not really a sackable offence IMO. Maybe she just wants to prove that she values your time together more than she cares about rain?

ActDottie · 31/07/2023 19:19

It’s just rain. It’s a bit odd she wasnt properly prepared for the weather but it is only rain.

ShouldReallyGoToBed · 31/07/2023 19:20

🤣🤣 I've got a few bonkers friends like this! Where I live it's considered 'hardy' to shrug off the rain!! I think the saying round here (kind of middle class area where no-one wants to admit privilege, so they try and act hard!!!) is "no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!"

Fuck that!! I hate the rain and always decline a 'walk' even if it's only drizzle!! 🤣 I don't care if Orlando camped out for 3 nights in hail on his school trip, or Jemima did her duke of Edinburgh in a blizzard! Good for them. Teenagers are mad. However, I'm not up for a mum chat in a rain coat and waterproofs! Costa is much more appealing 👍

Curseofthenation · 31/07/2023 19:21

I was suggesting what I would do when meeting a friend as I have a toddler. I'm 31 weeks pregnant and writing off the cuff 😅, my mind is a bit fuzzy today.

TulipCat · 31/07/2023 19:31

ivykaty44 · 31/07/2023 18:35

do you not have a raincoat, wellies and shorts for under the raincoat?

No wellies and I never wear shorts. I hate heavy rain and make no apology for it. Who wants to go for a walk in a deluge when it's not necessary?

VivX · 31/07/2023 19:32

OP, I think you should make this woman one of your best friends.
She's proved that she isn't flaky enough to let a bit of rain prevent her from meeting up.

There will never be a dull moment with somebody who is willing to stand chatting with you while she is literally standing in the torrential rain.
