Things on MNs that are confusing?

Just curious if anyone else wonders about these things:

  1. DP/DH with super outing hobby - what are these hobbies, naked trampoline tennis?

  2. DP/DH with super stressful job - what is it? Is it a known stressful job or is DP/DP just describing it as that? Anyone ever consider DH is incompetent or has been over promoted?

  3. The notion of a "posh wank" - it doesn't exist, it's a lie told by men caught cheating. Do people really believe it's a real thing?

OP posts:

Oh, and these GP surgeries where you can just pop in anytime and demand a range of blood tests for - insert obscure condition- which is highly unlikely in the first place and was suggested by a random on MN.

That puzzles me too. Seemingly all these GPs are happy to oblige with the demanded blood tests, and never point out that it will be a waste of time and resources. They must be so pleased that their patients are doing their job for them!

KingKhazi · 24/07/2023 06:24

People who refer to their DD or DS as "they" throughout the post to avoid being outed.

Far more annoying are the posters who claim they are “soooo confuuuuuuuused!” by this. No one is that stupid, surely?

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 24/07/2023 09:02

Threads slagging off Brits but the OP never says what country they come from, incase it's 'outing'.

ForTheSnarkWasABoojumYouSee · 24/07/2023 09:05

My GPs, and DC's GPs at Uni, and my parents' GPs have always seemed happy to dole out blood test forms at the drop of a hat in response to a complaint of "feeling a bit tired/shit"

I actually get quite annoyed by the constant accusation of double standards all the time. I'm not denying it happens (before I get deluged with examples..the hen do / stag do ones a few days ago being a case in point) but quite often a long and nuanced thread is derailed by this accusation when it's not warranted and isn't relevant. It just is an opening for MRAs to jump on and call us all man haters instead of acknowledging that there are some major issues.

I find the double standards on here laughable! Honestly, they’re jaw dropping.

Threenow · 24/07/2023 09:07

Parents in earlier times than now had no idea how to care for/bring up children, and can't be trusted to look after their grandchildren for even an hour. All of us who were brought up in these earlier times have massive issues and will be psychologically scarred for life by our parents terrible methods.

For some of us, that's true. And since our parents won't accept that we know better now, damn straight they're not seeing the kids alone. What do you suggest?

SparklesTheSoupDragon · 24/07/2023 09:12

Posters who ask for advice on, say, a name but then don’t actually say what the name is.

Posters who go completely off the scale of rational thinking, such as the poster who stated “this is abuse” along with the words “vile” and “cruel” because I suggested I was going to stagger 3 year old DD’s many party gifts and let her open them across a week. I mean, my mum is a bit OTT and I usually use her as a barometer of what is rational and what is not, and she doesn’t even touch the sides compared to some people.

And there's another one! Posters who think every single post is aimed at them and feel compelled to reply!!!

TATT = tired all the time - is a common reason for people to consult GPs with it's own battery of tests which are frequently normal

There's no test for anxiety obviously so often a diagnosis of exclusion which is reluctantly acknowleged by OP after pages and pages of diagnosis by MN committee

The other scary board for dangerous 'medical advice' is infant feeding/failure to thrive

No answer, then. I thought not.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 24/07/2023 09:21

I can’t stand the faux confusion from some posters when someone phrases something or describes something in a way they wouldn’t. “But… what do you mean?! I don’t understand! What could this incredibly strange thing be?!”

You know exactly what they mean - it just isn’t how you’d phrase it. This is particularly noticeable with Americanisms. I don’t particularly like them either, but I’m not going to feign ignorance and confusion if someone says they there something in the trash, for example.

There was a thread not long ago where the OP used the term “ice cream truck” instead of “ice cream van”. The number of posters who claimed not to understand what this meant was ridiculous. “What is an ice cream truck? An entire truck devoted solely to ice cream?! Goodness, whatever next?” Fuck off.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 24/07/2023 09:23

Oh, and that’s another one - grown women using “Goodness!” and “Gosh!” Were they all educated at Mallory Towers?

StolenCookie · 24/07/2023 09:24

tinkertots · 23/07/2023 21:38

Don't forget the whole cooked chicken that can feed a family of 9 every day for a month!

I remember seeing someone on here actually post this for real. They got rinsed in the comments.

DrSbaitso · 24/07/2023 09:31

As an interesting semi-aside, the most abusive comments I've ever had on here have been from people who are full of rage at the idea that the shitty, authoritarian, violent techniques used on them as children by their parents may have damaged them. They are certainly not damaged, their parents are fantastic so SHUT UP YOU REVOLTING FUCKING CUNT, I AM PERFECTLY STABLE AND MY PARENTS DID A GREAT JOB!!!111!!11 YOU CUNT!!!11!!1

(Since this thread is all about the things people on here don't understand, I probably have to clarify that I'm not actually saying this to anyone and I'm not calling anyone a cunt. I'm just reporting how a certain type of definitely not-damaged person responds to the discussion.)

BibbleandSqwauk · 24/07/2023 09:33

The utter inability of some posters to accept that not everyone has the exact same set up / accessibility etc as them. "surely there MUST be a bus / friend / neighbour / few quid spare / a sport they like / something they're good at / a few spare hours" any sentence that starts with "surely you can.." etc shows a woeful lack of imagination.

And @usedtobeasizeten as I said, I'm not denying they exist at all, often appallingly so, but not ALWAYS. Using it on some threads where you aren't actually comparing like with like is irritating.

Youdoyoutoday · 24/07/2023 09:34

Massive salad for lunch anyone?

And those that are fuming!

WeWereInParis · 24/07/2023 09:40

I find the double standards on here laughable! Honestly, they’re jaw dropping.

The worst example of this I ever saw was a man who posted who, for various reasons, was temporarily taking full custody of his children.

The lengths posters went to go explain why the mother shouldn't pay any maintenance at all were staggering. "How can she possibly get on her feet while paying maintenance??"

That shit would not fly if it was a man avoiding maintenance.

watersprites · 24/07/2023 09:42

My DS (young adult) is 6ft4 and my DD is tall too - I’m not!!

and do you find most people are the height of your son?

LadyGrinningSoul85 · 24/07/2023 09:45

Fizzadora · 23/07/2023 22:59

Well yes but that's because we get ripped to shreds by the universerati for being right wing 😉

"Well yes but that's because we get ripped to shreds by the universerati for being utterly selfish and not giving one fig over how our voting choices destroy actual lives of others as long as we punish those dirty benefit claimants/immigrants/poor people in general for existing"

There you go. Fixed it for you.

watersprites · 24/07/2023 09:46

But in MN no one should be friends with school mums and anyone asking any favour ever, even if happy to repay it, is a CF.

yep, this is true. It's not like this at all in real life.

The other thing I don't understand is the competitive 'should I go to A&E/ring 111' threads. 'My arm is hanging off and I've been in agony for days, do you think I should ring 111'.

OMG yes, you can only phone 999 & go to A&E if your dead basically

This ^

It's fucking insulting as a grandparent.

It's fucking insulting as a grandparent.

It's fucking traumatic as a child of those techniques.

We know better now. The evidence is in. Keep up or stay away from children. It's not about you and what you find insulting.

thebear1 · 24/07/2023 09:51

Posters who claim to be able to smell when another woman is wearing a scented sanitary towel. Fair enough if you don't like them, don't wear them. But if you can smell them when someone else is you should hire yourself out as an alternative to a sniffer dog.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 24/07/2023 09:54

@DrSbaitso , You don't even know what methods I even used when I raised my children.

But looking at a lot of children today and the amount of power they have over their parents and teachers I actually wonder what will happen when they become our leaders.
