Sean Bean is Sharpe, for me. Watched it all back when it was first released and loved it. So long ago! Had a real crush on Sharpe.

I keep meaning to re-watch with DH as he's never seen any of it. For DH Sean Bean is Boromir.

KateJohns · 20/07/2023 09:32

I like him. Have done for as long as I can remember. I was 13 when Sharpe started and I loved watching that. It's great when Seeny Beany pops up.

Seeny beeny or Shawny Borney
Can't have it both ways I'm afraid. 🤣

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/07/2023 09:34

I wish I'd watched Sharpe. Is it worth catching up with it now?

I love the fact that when the Game of Thrones production team heard Sean read through his lines in his own accent they said 'Great, stick with that' and so when the rest of the men of the north turned up they all had to learn to do a Sheffield accent very quickly.

FanFanFanFanYam · 20/07/2023 09:36

I suppose he plays similar-ish parts sometimes but I really like him. He’s a good actor, and I’ve rarely seen him in anything I didn’t like. He was great in Game of Thrones, really pitched his performance well, and the recent prison drama was brilliant.

Tabitha005 · 20/07/2023 09:37

I think Sean Bean has made a great living from basically just playing himself - like Sean Connery and John Cusack who are also, in my view, 'one trick ponies', although that's not to say I don't/haven't enjoyed some of their movies.

The actor that baffles me is Liam Neeson. I feel like he's been spectacularly miscast in pretty much anything he's ever done. How on earth he's got this career as a 'Hollywood hardman' type amazes me.

Star0Fire · 20/07/2023 09:37

He was excellent in Snowpiercer

He was excellent in Snowpiercer

Agreed - a really diverse and complex character

finewelshcheese · 20/07/2023 09:43

TallulahBetty · 20/07/2023 09:20

99% of the time he does play the same character, yes. See also: Hugh Grant; Damien Lewis, Jason Statham

Damian Lewis? He's totally different in everything he's been in!

FanFanFanFanYam · 20/07/2023 09:44

I love Harrison Ford but do think he’s very similar in everything - he does it really well though.

gazpachosoupday · 20/07/2023 09:28

This is why I like Sean Connery, no matter what nationality he was, always sounded Scottish

My favourite Sean character was his the scot/Russian in hunt for Red October beats his .Scots/irish/American in the untouchables.

my all time favourite fwiw was the brief glimpse of him in M&S Christmas commercial amongst a host of celebrities Men bearing gifts total yum

I have that clip I my YouTube favourites. That eyebrow lift😍

Mind you, I am a Sheffield lass so just a bit biased!

icebearforpresident · 20/07/2023 10:02

I haven’t watched a lot of things he has been in but I do love that in The Martian he’s playing a Nasa flight director and absolutely no one bats an eyelid that a guy from Yorkshire is in that position. Is his American accent that bad?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2023 10:06

FanFanFanFanYam · 20/07/2023 09:44

I love Harrison Ford but do think he’s very similar in everything - he does it really well though.

Why would anyone want Harrison Ford to be anyone other than Harrison Ford?Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2023 10:09

Had anyone mentioned Michael Caine? He always seems much the same in everything, but I can't think of a film of his that wasn't good. We recently saw one set in America - there was a brief reference to the 'brain drain' which solved his being unmistakably English nicely.

Catspyjamas17 · 20/07/2023 10:13

Not at all, I think he has really developed as an actor over time and is pretty good.

Catspyjamas17 · 20/07/2023 10:15

I didn't think much of Daniel Craig until I saw him in Our Friends in the North, he was brilliant in that. In so many other films you could replace him with a cardboard cutout, for me.

Tom Cruise is one who is Tom Cruise in everything.

Though to be fair, so was Cary Grant. But Cary Grant was amazing, so that's ok. 😍

EleanorRavenclaw · 20/07/2023 10:18

Sean Bean was tremendous in that series where he played a transvestite and Stephen Graham was his boyfriend. It seems to have been forgotten about. I also liked him in the drama about a priest. Also recently he showed vulnerability and sensitivity in Marriage with Nicola Walker. He is very varied and a very clever actor. He doesn’t always play tough guy roles. The only thing I’ve not seen him do is comedy although I could be wrong.

I don't think so. The character he plays in The Martian is kind and thoughtful. He seems like a lovely uncle in it.

justteanbiscuits · 20/07/2023 10:22

I so would

KvotheTheBloodless · 20/07/2023 10:26

He's a splendid actor, but he needs to sort his name pronunciation out. It's either 'Seen Been' or 'Shorn Born', he can't have it both ways.

trulyunruly01 · 20/07/2023 10:32

I didn't like that recent BBC drama Marriage but his acting in that, a far cry from his usual type, was not at all bad.
I agree about Daniel Craig - I was knee deep in nappies and baby sick when OFITN came out so just recently watched it (quiet night shifts). I was quite taken aback by his acting.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/07/2023 10:34

You are presumably a polymath, OP?

Hi would you mind linking this please? I tried to look it on YouTube and couldn't find it!
