To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

I also love Coldplay

Me too. I like Taylor, Ed and Coldplay....is there no hope for me? It’s me, hi, I’m the problem it’s me. 🙋🏻‍♀️😂

@Jongleterre when I was growing up i hated everything mainstream. I thought Morrissey's disdain for popularism was the coolest thing ever. I didn't think you could like The Smiths and George Michael and so I made my choices. But as a middle aged woman (who still loves The Smiths) I see that Morrissey is an insufferable prick and that George Michael was not only incredibly talented but a kind and lovely human being. I kick myself for a sense of superiority over people who just liked something different.

Music snobbery is tiresome.

She's absolutely dreadful. Mine are adults but if they had liked her 'songs' when they were children I would have failed as a parent.

Oh give over - if a life long Evertonian can cope with her children being Man U fans (hello!) then you'd get over it - I mean unless you would think the only sign of a good parent is controlling their kids tastes with an iron fist?

I like lots of musicians - have a wide and varied taste (DD1 has got me into female drill artists recently) - I like Pink and Gaga and also TS

DD's partner got 6 tickets - she's taking DD to Edinburgh, her mum to Wembley and Me and DD3 are going to Liverpool (I'm from there and my family still live there OP if that's okay with you) - I'm excited to see her - I thing she's a great song writer and very talented.

Have I gone mad on FB/MN about it - no - but people do get excited about stuff - My mate is beside herself to have landed DM tickets today!

Music is always personal and criticising other tastes is just daft and a tad mean.

I'm still gutted The Jam (greatest band ever) split up before I got to see them live.

TheaBrandt · 15/07/2023 14:36

Big fans here. Girls liked her at primary we eye rolled then listened to her other stuff and bloody loved it. Soundtrack of our family holidays. Saw Reputation as a family best night ever. Teens now like cool rappers Dh likes his Elgar but we still all love Taylor. Family bonding!

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 14:36

@tabulahrasa that makes sense I didn't know she had to cancel due to covid!

I don't get it either, dd is a fan though.

Think this is the crux though. She appeals to a certain demographic, namely daughters, who bring their mums, and gay males. It's not a demanding bunch.

She's obviously a talented artist, and her and her team of songwriters do come up with some decent tunes, but she's derivative. From Joni Mitchell onward others have been doing it for decades.

The biggest Taylor Swift fangirl on the planet wouldn't dare to put her anywhere near the level of a Freddie Mercury.

Swift is a product of the current music environment. Dull, harmless, lacking originality, but probably among the best of a really low quality field. Look at the nominations for awards shows today, then compare them to three decades ago. The drop of in standard is astounding. Glastonbury had Guns N Rose's, Elton John as headliners, who on earth is there today that could come close to putting on a show like those two?

The Korean pre-packaged groups sum up the cheap nature of current music. Simon Cowell (and the other Simon) really started the downturn in quality.

I'm really not a music snob for asking what the hysteria is about and being genuinely intrigued.

@StopBeingASquare I was responding to a comment by a PP that they would feel they had failed as a parent if their children liked Taylor Swift.

SayHi · 15/07/2023 14:43

She’s so fake.

I understand why kids might like some of her songs because they’re very cheesy and catchy but I don’t understand how anyone over the age of 14 can be so obsessed and can’t see how fake she is.

I remember when she was claiming to be so upset about Kanye West using her in a music video and then it later came out that it was her idea. She obviously denied it and then it was proven because it was caught on camera but her fans still wouldn’t believe it.

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 15/07/2023 14:44

There's always some fluff-brain who says they have never heard of someone who is one of the biggest most successful stars on the planet! 😆

Don't believe a word of it and think they are trying to sound all 'edgy.' (AND FAILING!)

@StopBeingASquare YABVU. Taylor is a Goddess, and she is very talented and gifted. 100s of millions of people worldwide love and appreciate her. My adult DD - and 6 of her mates were ecstatic to get concert tickets, and they are 28 to 33. Not kids. My neighbours - female couple 38 and 43 are huge fans too, and are also going to see her.

She is so talented, and so pretty too. I love her. As pps have said, you don't HAVE to 'get' the 'hype. No-one cares.

Bet you mock and deride adults who like Disney too, AND adults who play video games.

Everton, being Man U's feeder club, are close with Man U though. Like a tearful mother sending their kid off to their first day at school, Davey Moyes was practically waved off by Everton fans as he became Man U manager.

Now if you compare Liverpool to Man U, two clubs who haven't let a player of theirs sign for the other team since 1964, that's a different matter.

I mean I'm not even a diehard fan but it is very well documented that it was proven Kim and Kanye edited the "evidence" and she wasn't actually lying. You're sharing half a story here!

Hbh17 · 15/07/2023 14:50

Me neither. I couldn't name you any of her songs, and I don't think I would recognise any of them if I heard them! OK, I'm not " the target demographic", but is anyone able to explain what's so special about her? Or is it just a triumph of marketing?

LlynTegid · 15/07/2023 14:52

Not to my taste, though someone with ability and talent.

I draw a distinction between something not to my taste, and something that is just awful. Atomic Kitten and Westlife examples of the latter.

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 14:55

She obviously denied it and then it was proven because it was caught on camera but her fans still wouldn’t believe it.

The bit about calling her a bitch in the song was not ‘caught on camera’ at all. According to Taylor, that’s because it didn’t happen. Kanye seems to have some very serious mental health issues, he’s been vile to the mother of his children online. I really don’t think he’s someone I would believe or respect.

No-one needs to explain anything to you. If you don't like her, don't get her, don't understand her popularity, don't know ANY of her songs etc...

NO. ONE. CARES.

Taylor's fans don't give a shit that others don't care about Taylor. We really don't. So save your breath, and your faux confusion and blatherings like 'how come she is sooo popular,?' and claiming you don't know a single one of her songs. (YEAH RIGHT.) Wink

As I said, we don't CARE.

OP obviously cares enough to post a thread about Taylor Swift claiming how much she DOESN'T CARE about her! 😆 And a bunch of others who are not interested either, just HAD to post to say how little they care about her too!!! PMSL you couldn't make it up! 😆

Don’t be so dramatic.

I don’t like fake people.
If you do, then good for you.

This is a thread about disliking a certain person (there are always similar threads about different celebs/people in power).

If you can’t cope with people not liking her then perhaps you shouldn’t be on this thread.

I agree with a lot of what you say. However she has done some pretty great songs. I wouldn't see her live though.

The only thing I don't agree with is Pink.... can't stand her! All the hype, I'm just like why?!

Now Lady Gaga on the other hand is a true talent: singer, songwriter, pianist, dancer, the list goes on!

Pink is all of those things as well - she plays piano during her sets, she dances, does aerial silks, writes her songs, sings…

I get that lame "back in my day"...yeah that's an instant eye roll.

But that doesn't apply here. Talent doesn't change, what has changed is the music industry. A mid level performer 30 years ago would be a headline act now.

Instruments have become a scarcity (done by computer), tv contest shows really started to dominate the charts in the 2000s (killed off the battle for Christmas number one). Everything became pre packaged, watered down. Look at the K-pop acts, manufactured to the max. I mean, Harry bleedin Styles wins awards galore.

A pleasant girl with a guitar, who (along with a team of songwriters) has some decent tunes. And this the best today?

Love watching the reaction videos on YouTube where kids hear great music artists for the first time. They are often gobsmacked as it's not the quality they are accustomed to. Lizzo, little nas X, miley cyrus, for crying out loud.
