To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

“A pleasant girl with a guitar, who (along with a team of songwriters) has some decent tunes. And this the best today? “

There’s no team...

She obviously denied it and then it was proven because it was caught on camera but her fans still wouldn’t believe it.

The bit about calling her a bitch in the song was not ‘caught on camera’ at all. According to Taylor, that’s because it didn’t happen. Kanye seems to have some very serious mental health issues, he’s been vile to the mother of his children online. I really don’t think he’s someone I would believe or respect.

Erm yes it was caught on camera, as he played her the song and she said how great it was and then he said he was planning to have a look a like of her and other celebs and would this be ok. She was saying what a great idea it was and gave him some ideas too.

He asked for her permission before he did any of it but because he’s ND and has MH issues everyone thought he was lying.

Instead of coming out and supporting him by telling the truth she fanned the flames and said he was lying.
Fortunately, the entire conversation was caught on camera.

He has said some idiotic things but there is still so much stigma around MH and ND people that he was instantly called a liar and misogynistic etc over it, even though he was telling the truth and it was her that was lying.

Pink is all of those things as well - she plays piano during her sets, she dances, does aerial silks, writes her songs, sings…

Very talented.

There are rare diamonds out there like her today, but much harder to find than previous.

Cablescablescables · 15/07/2023 15:04

Maybe.... just maybe... people like different things? And that's ok? There is no 'hype' to get, some people love her, some people don't. Some people relate to her music, others don't. In this instance, many many people want to see her, and demand outweighs supply, hence the stress. It really isn't hard to understand!

It was edited, the full video shows that it wasn’t that she was responding to.

Kanye and kim edited it to make it look like she’d heard it.

It was very widely reported when the full video came out, in fairly surprised you’d know the first bit and not that tbh.

Phew...I thought I was the only one 🤣

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 15:07

@SayHi There is no recording about the bitch part. You’re wrong if you are saying there is.

My daughter is ND, no ‘stigma’ from me. I just know the bitch part wasn’t caught on a recording. According to Taylor she didn’t approve being called a bitch. The recording definitely didn’t include it.

aSofaNearYou · 15/07/2023 15:07

@DeeCee77 I mean, I think there's a bit of truth in what you're saying - the modern music industry is less geared up for creativity and individuality than it used to be. But at the same time you are very much saying what the previous generation used to say about the music you consider "great". Tale as old as time.

So she sat at the piano like Freddie Mercury and came up with a song like he did with Bohemian Rhapsody?

Do me a favour.

nokidshere · 15/07/2023 15:10

Of course. But I've never seen so much utter hysteria over a pop singer, which made me ask the question.

Ahh then you obviously weren't around for Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Elvis, The Beatles and many others. I haven't been to 'a gig' for many years now but hysteria over pop stars is certainly not a new phenomenon.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 15/07/2023 15:11

I remember when Michael Jackson and Madonna came to the UK in the 80s. Everyone lost their minds about them too! I don’t see this as any different. Taylor in fact seems to be one of the few singers today to get close to those levels of mega stardom.

She writes her own songs.

It’s not just her producers etc that say so, every artist she’s collaborated with say so, even John Mayer who would absolutely say if she didn’t given he’s complained publicly about the song she wrote about him.

Ah cross posted! Completely agree.
Or look at beatlemania. That was next level crazy stuff. The screaming!

@Jongleterre when I was growing up i hated everything mainstream. I thought Morrissey's disdain for popularism was the coolest thing ever. I didn't think you could like The Smiths and George Michael and so I made my choices. But as a middle aged woman (who still loves The Smiths) I see that Morrissey is an insufferable prick and that George Michael was not only incredibly talented but a kind and lovely human being. I kick myself for a sense of superiority over people who just liked something different.

Music snobbery is tiresome.

Agree. It's so pathetic when people claim to hate popular and mainstream artists. And CLAIM they have never heard of their songs. Agree also that Morrisey is an insufferable little prick. I loathe the man.

As I said, the type of poster who is slagging off Taylor Swift and those who like her, are the same type who berate and mock people for liking Disney or for playing video games. Rude, arrogant little snobs. The same type who sneer at a woman in her 30s being given a soft toy for Valentine's Day 'because toys are for kids,' (when deep down they're jealous and bitter because no man ever buys them anything.) Grin

Same type who mock grown women who like Unicorns, (and other fantasy things like fairy gardens,) and also pop stars, and TV shows that are mainstream and popular with the young - like Love Island. A neighbour mine 929 y.o. woman) said the other week that her spiteful 35 y.o. colleague mocked her for going to Alton Towers, and said she was really childish.

There are some spectacularly rude and judgemental people out there. Some are on this thread sadly.

This. ^ Lots of jealousy towards Taylor on here. Beautiful, talented, gifted, successful, rich etc... It's understandable, but people are embarrassing themselves with their clear and obvious irrational hatred for her.

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 15/07/2023 15:15

My neighbour is 29 by the way, not 929!!!

xPissflapsx · 15/07/2023 15:16

I think maybe I'm too old for her... (what a Pile of wank) my 10yr quite likes her

No, hence the "back in my day" trope doesn't apply to today.

Again, talent doesn't change, unfortunately for music the environment has, enormously. You said it, creativity, individuality...infinitely less as record companies go for pre-packaged acts (Cowell and co. playing a huge role), also theres no longer any regional movements (Merseybeat, Seattle grunge, London/NYC punk rock etc.) as they can't organically develop independently anymore as they become known very early via the internet.

More likely a guitar, but yeah she writes her own songs.

Why does that bother you so much? Why is Taylor's talent getting under your skin so much? Green doesn't suit you. Envy

PinkyFlamingo · 15/07/2023 15:18

But why do you have to understand the hype? Surely music is like everything else in life, everyone likes different things?

gigipom · 15/07/2023 15:18

Goodness I feel the same. I think her music is dreadful - so so boring.

Exactly. Horrible goady thread with many spiteful comments about a successful talented young woman. The jealousy is rife on here. So unpleasant to see. I'm out. It's making me nauseous.

There really aren't that many great, iconic musicians around nowadays, so the likes of Beyonce and Taylor get treated like icons when they really shouldn't be.

Not many great bands around either. Glasto headliners this year were Guns n Roses (big success in the 80s) and Elton (big success in the 70s). Even the Arctics coming up to 20 years ago their heralded first album, where's all the new stuff that isn't drivel? Last year McCartney (Beatles in the 60s).

I think because social media has resulted in it being the hypiest hype that's ever hyped. Obviously there have always been mega popular bands and musicians that other people weren't into but the Swift thing being all over social media means it's almost impossible to fully filter it out. It feels a bit like watching people going through some kind of religious experience.
