To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

Maybe some people just like different things?

Careerdilemma · 15/07/2023 13:33

I'm not the biggest fan, but I've seen her live once before and she was surprisingly brilliant and it was such a lovely feelgood occasion that I'm going again this time round.

Of course, I've just never seen so much hysteria on mumsnet over a pop singer.

You're not alone. It's mediocre drivel to me.

Hayfeverseasonalready · 15/07/2023 13:35

I agree with a lot of what you say. However she has done some pretty great songs. I wouldn't see her live though.

The only thing I don't agree with is Pink.... can't stand her! All the hype, I'm just like why?!

Now Lady Gaga on the other hand is a true talent: singer, songwriter, pianist, dancer, the list goes on!

LemonsOnTheMelons · 15/07/2023 13:36

You have no basis to say comment on her live singing from a YouTube video 🤦‍♀️

If you don’t get the hype, that’s okay. Nobody gives a shit. Miss out on the fun all you want, but it’s poor form to make fun of those who are enjoying themselves.

purpleros · 15/07/2023 13:38

Taylor is magnificent.

Why do I have no basis to comment on a professional recording of her live singing? Are you saying you have to see somebody live to pass comment on their talent?

And where have I made fun of anyone please?

I’m not a super fan but I like her and I’ve seen her in concert twice.

She definitely has that ‘something’ imo. And she seems like a good role model for young girls, takes no shit, points of misogyny.....and likes cats. what’s not to like? 😅

Kindofcrunchy · 15/07/2023 13:40

I'd much rather see Rammstein and have my eyebrows burnt off.

XelaM · 15/07/2023 13:40

I so agree OP and so does my teenage daughter. She was actually a fan of Taylor Swift's when she was much younger and we went to a Taylor Swift concert years ago when she was in London. It was ok, but nothing Earth-shartering. Now she says "Taylor Swift is so dead" (in teenage speak of course 😂) and we don't get the hype at all.

We went to see The Weekend the other day instead and I found it so much more entertaining than the Taylor Swift concert a few years ago. 🤷‍♀️

Because it’s a YouTube video, so the audio isn’t an accurate representation of what it’s actually like to hear her sing live.

This is making fun of people.

Jigslaw · 15/07/2023 13:41

People like different things, tickets are really hard to get hold of so people are discussing it, some people enjoy planning an outfit (of course people can still go in t shirt and jeans if they want though)! Its fine if you don't like her or don't see the hype- not sure why it's hard to comprehend that others like her though, not hard to not click threads with her in the title though? People have been streaming her tour and it looks brilliant, the outfits, the staging, its not surprising some who aren't huge taylor fans are interested.

Floralnomad · 15/07/2023 13:41

I’ve seen her live twice and frankly I find her ‘talks’ really cringy and fake , I don’t know why because I’m quite happy when Bruce Springsteen talks mid concert . I preferred her earlier stuff and my daughter has said she’s not interested in going to the tour this time so I have my out .

SpeckledlyHen · 15/07/2023 13:42

I totally agree with you OP. I do not understand the hype at all - it is not just on MN. I noticed it on FB and was incredulous to be honest. Grown women going on about codes and tickets etc. Totally bizarre to me but I have never been big on fangirling for anyone really.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 15/07/2023 13:42

I'd never heard of her until I saw threads on here. I guess if people like her enough they are going to make an effort to get tickets.

isthismylifenow · 15/07/2023 13:42

The only reason I know she is doing a UK tour is from this site. As I have seen so many threads about it. (I'm not in UK).

There are true fans. And then there is the hype. There are only so many tickets, so if you can get some, well you are one up over a lot of other people.

I see it here quite a lot. We don't get that many international artists really, and then when they do come, people go quite mad for the tickets. When they are not even a huge fan of the artist.

And then there is the artist's marketing behind it to sell all those tickets....

switswoo81 · 15/07/2023 13:43

Ah Taylor Swift has now taken over Ed Sheeran on MN for artists we are too cool to like.

Screamingabdabz · 15/07/2023 13:43

Taylor Swift is a hard working young woman who has had consistent success whilst also being a great role model to young girls. Her song writing lyrics are, far from mediocre, they’re f’cking genius if you were to listen to them carefully. Her catchy pop songs are beloved and bring joy in the world whenever you hear them in shops or on the radio. Pink is also great but Taylor is next level goddess.

I agree. She appeals to a huge variety of people, which I think is unusual for many artists these days. Her shows also look phenomenal, so I can see why there's a huge demand for tickets this time.

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 13:45

Ultimately though, you don’t really have to understand the hype. Just accept people like different things.

I don’t really get the Harry Styles obsession but I don’t have to. He makes people happy, people seem to connect with his music, that’s a good thing. Just like who you like. 🤷🏻‍♀️

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 13:45

@LemonsOnTheMelons thankfully the videos were professionally recorded and high quality audio. I'd understand if they were recorded on a Motorola razor. But they weren't.

And again, I'm not taking the piss out of anyone.

Never heard of her? Confused I understand not liking her music / not understanding the hype, but I can't imagine there are many people out there who haven't heard of her at all.

Elsiebear90 · 15/07/2023 13:47

I don’t get it either, don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike her, I think she’s a good pop artist, but I don’t get the insane levels of hype.

I’ve seen videos where her concerts have hundreds and hundreds of people who couldn’t get tickets stand in the carpark just to hear her and are crying hysterically. I think she’s a fairly good singer and makes nice pop songs, but I just can’t see what makes so many people go this crazy for her.

My wife is a huge fan and thinks she’s incredible so was trying to get tickets, I was secretly happy when she got put on the waiting list for a code because I really don’t want to spend three hours listening to people scream her songs at the top of their lungs and cry at the mere sight of her. I think Lady Gaga is a much better artist, but I guess different strokes for different folks!

Florenz · 15/07/2023 13:47

There really aren't that many great, iconic musicians around nowadays, so the likes of Beyonce and Taylor get treated like icons when they really shouldn't be.
