To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

@StopBeingASquare Cruel Summer isn’t actually a new song. It is a song on her 2019 album titled ‘Lover’ (and my favourite album, actually). The song has gained popularity since the start of the eras tour (you can see viral TikToks of her performing the now infamous bridge) and there was a campaign by fans for her to release it as a single, which she responded to by doing so.

This feeds into what a PP said about how most of her best works haven’t been released as singles. Certainly, none of my favourite songs have been.

Of course you can! If you know a certain something isn't to your taste you can certainly say you don't like it.

If someone doesn't like seafood, can they not say they don't like prawns as they haven't tried them?

(I forgot I did this thread, I remember how many TS fans I angered now Grin)

I have listened to some of her bits though. I do like her new song cruel summer!

I don't think you can say you don't like prawns if you haven't tried them. For all you know they might not taste like any other seafood. Plus Taylor Swifts music covers more than one genre so you can't even say I don't like..... so won't like her music.

Hecatoncheires · 02/10/2023 16:46

@TSsupafan Couldn't agree with you more. I always thought she was a bit 'fluffy', perfectly nice but not very deep - and that's okay. But I've been listening to her albums recently and there is so much wonderful storytelling, imagery, beautiful melody and emotion. My current firm favourites are Marjorie (though, my god, it makes me cry every time as I think of my late mum), Mad Woman, Haunted, Happiness, Enchanted. The list goes on! If you have tickets to see her in concert, as I do, then I hope you have the most Bejewelled time and sparkle all night.

Againstmachine · 02/10/2023 18:01

It's bizarre with her more crazy fans anything off their narrative is considered trying to tear a successful woman down ect, it really isn't people have a right not to like things.

I find her music bland and uninteresting, and nothing no one else has done before, it isn't just her Ed Sheeran I find bland, this is my opinion.

And before anyone says listen to this and that and say that some of just don't want to listen to it.

beguilingeyes · 02/10/2023 18:37

I can't stop watching this. It's very sweet. Also...she's a giant!

It’s completely legitimate not to like her music but there is a vast difference between ‘meh, it’s not for me’ and ‘she’s a horrendous role model’ / ‘she’s a vacuous bimbo who doesn’t deserve her success’ / ‘she has no talent and people who like here are vapid sheeple’ (which is the attitude of some posters on this thread, though not you or OP!)

That's a lovely video.
I can't listen to that song without weeping. It's beautiful.

Yassification100 · 03/10/2023 05:57

She’s genuinely nice, I think. She hasn’t always got it right in terms of her media strategy and deciding when to speak and when to stay quiet but I really believe she’s fundamentally a good person trying her best.

Omg! Ed Sheehan…so bland!

AngeloMysterioso · 03/10/2023 11:22

Shake it off is to Taylor Swift as Yellow Submarine is to The Beatles, or Fat Bottomed Girls to Queen, or, I dunno… Hump de Bump to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers… well-known, memorable, but if it’s all you’ve heard and you think it is representative of the entire catalogue, or of the writer’s level of lyrical or compositional mastery, and so you’re not bothering to listen to anything else- then you’re missing out, and insisting to everyone else that it’s all crap based on that one example just makes you look a bit foolish.

AngeloMysterioso · 03/10/2023 11:26

Ronan is the song that makes me cry… even more so now that I have two little boys. I just can’t listen to it anymore. Incredible to think that she was only 21 when she wrote it.

EmmaEmerald · 03/10/2023 11:35

OP "I do like her new song cruel summer!"

that's 4 years old.

i'm a big fan and old enough to have been there from the start.

currently, I feel every word of Champagne Problems. And he's messaging me rn <cries> ready for me to drop his glass heart all over again.

incredible to be doing an Eras tour at 33. An extraordinary body of work.

EmmaEmerald · 03/10/2023 11:39

I also really love the history of The Last Great American Dynasty.

I just love all of it.

I would say I am an anti fan, I don’t get the hype for someone so untalented or good live - I get her prolific songwriting but I find her singing mediocre and her live performances from what I’ve seen on tv really mediocre

I also think it has a lot to do with media hype and her recent struggles with the industry - which I respect her for but damn many black female artists have been talking about that for ages and it’s gone unnoticed

i much prefer Beyoncé and of the newer generation SzA , Ella mai etc - amazing vocalists and performers

Why resurrect a thread that was started nearly a year ago?

I'd much rather see Rammstein and have my eyebrows burnt off.

I know this comment is a year old but I agree!! I've seen Rammstein live before and the heat from the stage was insane!
They're one of the best bands I've seen live.

Amy8 · 24/06/2024 01:31

Why carry on further then mums net police ? It popped up on my watching thread ! I also thought about her recent tour seeing as she's in uk - so on that basis relevant

I'm waiting to be inspired ...so a true fans you're not it ?

Hahaha mumsnet police, that’s a good one. Maybe start your own thread? It’s annoying reading a post, going to comment and then realising that it’s a zombie thread that someone randomly resurrected….

TheaBrandt · 24/06/2024 07:26

That prissy comment “I don’t like her music I dont want to listen to it” is hilarious! So you are saying you dont like something you’ve never actually personally experienced?! Utter sheep like behaviour there.

headstone · 24/06/2024 09:03

I’ve never understood the desire to attend any massive concert tbh. I hate crowds and queuing and what happens if you need the loo. Surely you can’t even here or see much just loads of people screaming.

beguilingeyes · 24/06/2024 09:21

"her live performances from what I’ve seen on tv really mediocre"

Because you can really judge a live performance from clips on TV (rolls eyes forever)

The Eras live show is phenomenal...and I've only seen the film. Most stadium shows are four blokes on a stage down one end of the pitch. She pretty much uses the whole pitch with a vast stage and the show and effects are amazing.
I saw Simple Minds last week and god, they were dull (we went for the support band). Plodding 80s rock.

nupnup · 24/06/2024 10:48

I've seen the Eras film.
I think she's a fantastic song writer but I thought a lot of her show was props and dancers. Her actual performances I thought were mediocre too. I think she has a very average voice, and some songs I've seen live and on TV, are very average to not so good.

I respect her as a good woman for youngsters to look up to. She has good values. She's just a bit too squeaky clean for me. I can't put my finger on it. But I think if you stripped back all the fluffiness lights props and dancers at her shows, it would be very very average.

My theory is that she needs all of that in her shows because her voice on its own probably isn't enough.

I think her music is mediocre but sometimes even mediocre entertainers can put on amazing shows , however it's the level
Of hype I don't get

Buryyiirwhat · 24/06/2024 12:18

I think she’s okay, but the hype and the 3 hour. Arena shows are WAY over the top and ridiculously priced. DD wanted to go, friend found tickets -£300 EACH!

When I told DD the price even she thought it wasn’t worth it!
Ridiculous hassle to get extortionate tickets and out even more pressure on parents…
