To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

I don't get it either, dd is a fan though.

In relation to the hype about this particular tour, I’d say that’s because she wrote two of her most acclaimed albums on lockdown and gained a lot of fans during that time. She then subsequently released a massively well received album to all her new fans, then announced this tour, which on top of all the hype from those three albums is an ‘eras’ tour covering every album so far. That’s never happened before, hence the rush of old and new fans clamouring for tickets.

This makes sense!

I find some her music to be a bit samesy but she can also write an absolute banger with every album. She’s very versatile in her style, honestly she can move with the time/age in a way only Madonna has done previously. I think her perseverance is amazing though. So many times people have tried to rip her down, and every time she rises back up better, stronger and more popular than before. She’s absolutely an idol to young girls and how to not take shit from egotistical men.

I personally don’t get the hype for the new tour but I can see why she’s got huge appeal.

IveHadItUpToHere · 15/07/2023 14:02

Your post reminds me of a story - a woman loved Taylor Swift. Her bf was all 'oh I don't understand' - any of the barely disguised insults in your OP - plus 'she's not a real songwriter like Billy Joel'. They split up. A few months later Billy Joel did an interview and was asked who he rated out of modern songwriters. Guess who he said?
People have different tastes. It's fine. But trying to disparage them is always a dick move.

stayathomer · 15/07/2023 14:03

I’ve seen videos of her live and she’s amazing but then look at her with Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer steals the show! I’d have loved to have gone because her last concert here was meant to be so good but didn’t get sent a code and I hope a super fan gets one. I do worry that this will be the way to get tickets in the future- chance

ComputerInitiateJump · 15/07/2023 14:03

I remember how I felt about Madonna so if that's how fans feel about TS, I absolutely get it!

I didn't get to see Madonna live so I'm really trying to get TS tickets for my dd's but I'm only waitlisted so probably no chance this time.

CountFoscoHasMiceInHisPocket · 15/07/2023 14:03

I find her music to be quite boring too but I enjoy watching people be passionate about a musician so I'm happy for people I know who were desperate to get some tix and then managed it.

WeetabixTowels · 15/07/2023 14:04

I don’t get it when people make the artist they like a big part of their personality or that of their child. I know a school mum who loves Guns n Roses and always bangs on about her pride with her 7yo son’s taste in music as he likes them too. Why would that make you proud? It’s just a taste, and who wants a little clone mini me anyway.

GallaBru · 15/07/2023 13:57

I don’t get the hype either. Or the cost of tickets. I got to meet Lady Gaga for a whole hour after one gig for far less than one VIP Taylor ticket 😂 it’s WILD.

i don’t rate Taylor’s voice either, and people say it’s her songwriting that’s great, but I can’t say I’ve ever looked so I can’t comment.

I just think indeed there’s similarities to her in Ed in the sense that we are swamped with their songs on radio repetitively and they all start to sound the same for me.

Omg I am beyond jealous! What was she like?
I saw her live at the 02 and she was fantastic!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/07/2023 14:04

Tbh I thought that about Harry Styles until DD insisted we go-& dress up etc. He was completely and utterly fucking fabulous and the most entertaining concert I have ever been to. And I am now obsessed 🫣

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 15/07/2023 14:05

I don't get it either, but I appreciate that millions can't be wrong. I'm waiting for the penny drop moment.

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 14:05

'Again, if you’ve never heard a live performance live, you cannot comment on what they are actually like to listen to live.'

@LemonsOnTheMelons

This is a load of shit. Sorry. Professional videographers often drown out the sound of huge crowds so the audio quality is often clearer on professionally recorded live videos. Of course you can comment on what someone's singing voice is like without being stood in the venue.

If you have ever watched the X factor auditions, do you never comment on their audition because you weren't sat there next to Simon cowell?

The other artists that have been mentioned here as "better artists" - Pink, Lady Gaga etc are all talented and put on a great show live, but they don't write songs that speak to me. I can't think of a single lyric of theirs that jumps out at me and makes me think "wow, that really moved me", even though I enjoy them. Taylor is great at that, on a broad range of topics, and as such she touches a lot of different people.

She's also very hardworking, putting out far more content than most of her peers and keeping the hype alive, and she puts a lot of effort into making her fans feel special to her so they stick around.

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 13:59

I've never seen anything like it! I'm now educated that she is a talented songwriter, stands up for womens rights. (Which of course is appealing and the right thing when you have such a huge platform.)

But I think she has such a bang average voice. But you only say this if you're trying to be a 'cool girl' mind!

Depends what you mean by average - she’s got a good range, a lot of her most recent albums are very low, lower than some female singers can hit at all.

Her singles don’t really showcase her voice to be fair. Her singles are in fact a pretty bad representation of her work in general... that’s a whole thing though 🤣

But yeah the songwriting is definitely her draw for most people.

And she does do her shows as a whole performance, it’s not just watch her sing.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 15/07/2023 14:07

I couldn't name a single TS song if my life depended on it. Or Beyonce or other big stars.

Pop culture of the last 20 years has passed me by. 🤣

Jigslaw · 15/07/2023 14:07

Jongleterre · 15/07/2023 13:54

She's absolutely dreadful. Mine are adults but if they had liked her 'songs' when they were children I would have failed as a parent.

This is one of the most pathetic things I've ever read on here even though it's your attempt at humour I'm sure.

SerafinasGoose · 15/07/2023 14:07

Couldn't name a song of hers at gunpoint so I've no idea whether she's good, bad or indifferent. My tastes tend to run to rock, alternative and classical. But this woman certainly seems very successful and people like what she does, so good luck to her and them.

I asked a question as I'm genuinely intrigued.

Calm yourself down.

She’s a fantastic song writer and story teller and has been from a really young age. Her live performances are incredible and have all the content you listed in your op.
She is a strong role model for women-check out her history with spotify and with her own material. She’s a very shrewd business woman who managed to royally screw over those who tried to screw her over with her release of all her old hits.

But yes the current madness and hype is a weird phenomenon. Driven by mainstream and social media and buying in to the band wagon jumping trendy vibe times we live in.

Check out After Glow from Lover as your starter before you dismiss her song writing talent completely 😉

I don’t know why people assume if you don’t like someone something that is popular it’s because you’re trying to be cool, is there a rule that we all have to like certain artists?

I don’t consider myself cool at all, but I’m not keen on Ed Sheeran or TS, I think being constantly bombarded with music that you don’t particularly enjoy can definitely turn you off someone, if I never heard another Ed Sheeran song again I would be happy, not because I think he’s awful or his songs are terrible, but because I’ve heard enough of his music (which to me is fairly pleasant, but dull) to last me a lifetime.

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 14:11

I don't know any of her songs but I'm sure she is quite pleasant to listen to, like Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran and others, I don't know any of their songs either but they always sound ok when I see them on the telly.

DarkDarkNight · 15/07/2023 14:11

People like different things. Primarily she’s a songwriter, I don’t expect songwriters I love to have the most amazing voices in the world. They can have a nice voice that appeals to me in some way (Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Brendan Benson are singers I love who aren’t amazing but they move me). She can sing though, and she works hard and her voice has matured in a really nice way.

My primary love is Lana Del Rey and while I don’t think Taylor is at that level (Lana is an artist for the ages for me) I think she’s great. Midnights is a really strong album. Folklore and Evermore were a huge step forward, but I think people like to keep artists in a certain box sometimes and would never admit if they liked it.
