To not get the Taylor swift hype?

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 13:31

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

She's talented, beautiful and knocks out some right bangers.

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 14:12

She’s a fantastic song writer and story teller

Thats her country music roots. A great genre for story telling through songs. 🤠

She’s a fantastic song writer and story teller and has been from a really young age. Her live performances are incredible and have all the content you listed in your op.
She is a strong role model for women-check out her history with spotify and with her own material. She’s a very shrewd business woman who managed to royally screw over those who tried to screw her over with her release of all her old hits.

But yes the current madness and hype is a weird phenomenon. Driven by mainstream and social media and buying in to the band wagon jumping trendy vibe times we live in.

Check out After Glow from Lover as your starter before you dismiss her song writing talent completely 😉

I'll have a listen - thank you!

I'd much rather see Rammstein and have my eyebrows burnt off.

Rammstein are on another level to Swift in terms of spectacle.

There's nothing today remotely close to the level of a Freddie Mecury, Michael Jackson or Prince in terms of electric performers today, but these guys are quite possibly the best of the current bunch. This opening song (2 minutes in) in the way each member is introduced is epic:

I'll wait...

She's absolutely dreadful. Mine are adults but if they had liked her 'songs' when they were children I would have failed as a parent.

My DDs are adults (25 and 30) and they adore TS. They have managed to score tickets to see her. Even though her music is not for me I feel very proud that my DDs follow someone who, like them, is a confident and hard working young woman. They tell me her songs speak to them in a way no other songs do and really seem to represent what they think and the attitude they have to life.

DrYou · 15/07/2023 14:17

I don’t think it’s about how well she sings (although she’s definitely not a bad singer!), I think it’s because she is a very good writer but more importantly she’s made herself relatable - I think she’s presented herself in a way and written songs that make people feel comfortable and as if they know her/could be like her and she seems ‘normal’ and likeable. She’s pretty but in a very non fake way and she tells a lot about her anxiety/insecurities. Her songs were a big part of a lot of people’s teenage years and maybe helped them through ? Or just pure nostalgia ?

louderthan · 15/07/2023 14:18

I agree with you OP, but then I don't get the Beyoncé hype either.
Lady GaGa on the other hand I love.

Florenz · 15/07/2023 13:47

There really aren't that many great, iconic musicians around nowadays, so the likes of Beyonce and Taylor get treated like icons when they really shouldn't be.

Of course there will be less 'iconic' musicians when we have the likes of YouTube and Spotify. People aren't all forced to listen to the same thing, i.e the few bands record companies have deemed worthy

Yanbu op but each to their own.

I particularly disliked antihero. Sounded like it was written by a 14 yo who’d just found a rhyming dictionary for the first time.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/07/2023 14:22

Please can you edit your first post, OP, to remove the reference to "selling a kidney"?

For those with kidney disease ( who might actually need a donor kidney) it's really offensive.

Oh come on.

Westfacing · 15/07/2023 14:24

I'm caught up in the hype because my DGD(14) loves her - at present I have a code for two of the Wembley dates.

It was much simpler for Arianna Grande at the 02!

bonoslefteyebrow · 15/07/2023 14:24

She's bloody awful but I get why kids like her. Grown ups not so much as as far as I can tell it's all whiny nonsense.

Why do people like anything though? Look at Coldplay, I mean 🥱

Each to their own indeed, I loved Antihero. When you sit and listen to the lyrics, I find it to be one of the most achingly honest accounts of an artists own flaws I've heard in a long time, which is very clever for what just sounds like an easy listening pop tune. It's brilliant.

Maybe it comes from being able to relate to the picture she paints!

I agree re Coldplay.

I totally understand people like different things, of course. I've just never seen such hysteria over tickets before which provoked me to ask the question.

I like Taylor, she writes her own music and adds Easter eggs to songs / videos hinting at ideas she had for 3 years away. For me that’s different to someone who can just sing and takes random songs from song writers.

It reminds me of an author who’s planning out a book series and how it all entwines.

She stand up for women rights and calls out the industry.

Im not a massive hardcore fan but I like what she stands for.

Tinkietot · 15/07/2023 14:27

I also love Coldplay 🤣😂🤣😂

stayathomer · 15/07/2023 14:27

Sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby, and I’m an ogre on the hill

it must be exhausting always rooting for the antihero

The family gathers 'round and reads it and then someone screams ‘she’s laughing up at us from hell!’

Only one of her songs and it has three gems such as these!!

stayathomer · 15/07/2023 14:28

Part of the hysteria over tickets is also just timing.

She had to cancel a tour because of covid, so didn’t tour that album, released 3 new ones since then and 3 re-recorded ones. The 2 she wrote during lockdown were hugely popular outside her existing fan base too.

and the show itself is longer and covering lots of back discography as well as the untoured stuff.

I'll have a listen - thank you!

I would add Clean from 1989, Call It What You Want from Reputation, The Great War from Midnights (3am), Hoax from Folklore, Tolerate It from Evermore. So many beautiful songs that couldn’t be further away from some of the singles like Me! I think there’s a place for both, I love songs like I Knew You Were Trouble but there’s more to her than that as well.
