To not get the Taylor swift hype?

I have my hard hat on.
Probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate.

I really don't get all this fuss about Taylor swift, I just find her utterly boring. All this fuss about midnight / album / preorders / codes to then try and attempt to get tickets in Scotland when you live on the cliffs of lands end. Threads and threads about it and people planning their outfits when the gig is a year away, I thought gig attire was jeans and a tour T shirt?! From various YouTube videos I've seen of her singing live I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. Mediocre voice, dodging high notes. I'm obviously a minority here as there's people willing to sell a kidney to just get a code to be in with a chance of getting a ticket.

I saw Pink in Hyde park a few weeks ago where she was singing live, doing incredible acts, dancing, acrobats etc and it was incredible. I'm not trying to compare, but I just find Taylor so average!

Can anyone tell me why there's all of this hype. I'm fully aware my username is rather fitting.

(I'll get my coat..)

Taylor Swift is a hard working young woman who has had consistent success whilst also being a great role model to young girls. Her song writing lyrics are, far from mediocre, they’re f’cking genius if you were to listen to them carefully. Her catchy pop songs are beloved and bring joy in the world whenever you hear them in shops or on the radio. Pink is also great but Taylor is next level goddess.

Fair enough!

Never heard of her? Confused I understand not liking her music / not understanding the hype, but I can't imagine there are many people out there who haven't heard of her at all.

Oh just ignore. It’s the cool girl one-upmanship of how shit they find Taylor Swift. Boring.

Clarista · 15/07/2023 13:47

She’s a remarkable songwriter and lyricist, that’s the reason she’s so popular. She’s also very adaptable and has moved through every musical ‘era’ without putting a foot wrong. Very rare to reach your 30s and not have a single bad album under your belt.

Would agree that her voice is pretty average, but it’s not really important as it’s her songwriting and storytelling that sets her apart. She can pump out a number one pop hit or an indie album of quiet, thoughtful tracks without missing a beat, and I can’t think of anyone else who can do that.

switswoo81 · 15/07/2023 13:43

Ah Taylor Swift has now taken over Ed Sheeran on MN for artists we are too cool to like.

Haha so true, well not everyone can be too cool for the hype you know. Meanwhile most people just get on and like what they like regardless of whether its cool or not. Plenty of popular artists I'm not a fan of personally but I don't find it challenging to understand that people like different things.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 15/07/2023 13:48

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 13:45

Ultimately though, you don’t really have to understand the hype. Just accept people like different things.

I don’t really get the Harry Styles obsession but I don’t have to. He makes people happy, people seem to connect with his music, that’s a good thing. Just like who you like. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Most people I know assumed I'd want to see TS, because I'm nuts about Harry, and actually all boybands, but I've no interest in her at all!
In fact if I was given a ticket I'd sell it.
I can't really even explain why, she just does nothing for me, good on those who'll enjoy her shows though.

ellenpartridge · 15/07/2023 13:48

Love her, always have, seen her quite a few times over the years and will be going to Wembley next summer though I haven't planned my outfit 🙄... Great singer, great song writer, seems to be a genuinely nice person. Not sure what's not to like but if she's not for you then just scroll along 🤷‍♀️

Backstreets · 15/07/2023 13:49

Whinge · 15/07/2023 13:43

I agree. She appeals to a huge variety of people, which I think is unusual for many artists these days. Her shows also look phenomenal, so I can see why there's a huge demand for tickets this time.

Exactly, she’s got wide appeal, which is becoming rare. Young people, older people, pop fans, country fans, indie fans. It’s like a throwback to good old monoculture - everybody being excited about the same thing! I like a few of her records and if it wasn’t such a nightmare getting tickets I would have happily gone to see her live.

XelaM · 15/07/2023 13:50

Hey I love Britney so I'm definitely not too cool for anything (actually have never been cool in my life 😂). I just find Taylor Swift completely overrated like Adele and I've been to Taylor's live concert a few years ago and it was just ok. Nothing memorable.

Hayfeverseasonalready · 15/07/2023 13:50

Elsiebear90 · 15/07/2023 13:47

I don’t get it either, don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike her, I think she’s a good pop artist, but I don’t get the insane levels of hype.

I’ve seen videos where her concerts have hundreds and hundreds of people who couldn’t get tickets stand in the carpark just to hear her and are crying hysterically. I think she’s a fairly good singer and makes nice pop songs, but I just can’t see what makes so many people go this crazy for her.

My wife is a huge fan and thinks she’s incredible so was trying to get tickets, I was secretly happy when she got put on the waiting list for a code because I really don’t want to spend three hours listening to people scream her songs at the top of their lungs and cry at the mere sight of her. I think Lady Gaga is a much better artist, but I guess different strokes for different folks!

Yay you agree with me! As I said further up the thread Lady Gaga is just amazing!

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 13:50

Ah Taylor Swift has now taken over Ed Sheeran on MN for artists we are too cool to like.

People just seem to like to try to knock anyone who is successful, especially if they seem nice with it

I really like Ed’s music, I’ve seen him live a few times now, and again, he seems like a really nice person. The comments on here about him have been very personal at times. People are weird. If Ed, Taylor of whoever isn’t for you, move on. 🤷🏻‍♀️

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 13:50

I don't know what's so cool about not liking / understanding the hype about a pop singer so no, I'm not trying to 'up-manship / too cool' anything.

I also understand people like different things. Of course. But I've never seen so much utter hysteria over a pop singer, which made me ask the question.

WeetabixTowels · 15/07/2023 13:50

I’m not a big enough fan to bother with tickets but she makes very good music and according to friends she’s amazing live. She doesn’t seem to be an artist who cancels concerts, she goes everywhere and has a really long tour with loads of dates. I totally get why that’s appealing.

tabulahrasa · 15/07/2023 13:50

She’s a decent singer, she doesn’t belt high notes but that’s because she’s an alto.

Shes a brilliant lyricist though.

And her tours are really well produced, crowd light effects, fireworks, pyrotechnics, she moves round so everyone is fairly close to her for at least one song.

Agree Op. Her and Harry Styles are both so overrated although she has a smidge more talent than him and is slightly morw entertaining.

NashvilleQueen · 15/07/2023 13:52

I mean it isnt just us. She's constantly recognised for her achievements (see below) and is an incredible song writer. She's practically incapable of writing a rubbish song. But of course you don't have to like her - there's lots of people I don't like - and you definitely don't need to click on links about her on mumsnet.

To not get the Taylor swift hype?
MindPalace · 15/07/2023 13:54

It’s a perfectly fair question to ask - no idea why posters are being so defensive. I’ve seen TS three times in the past with DDs, but am bemused by the hysteria this time round.

OP is not trying to be cool - it’s just that this time the ticket buying frenzy has been next level, and I still can’t work out why. And I know, as I’ve helped my niece get tickets.

Jongleterre · 15/07/2023 13:54

She's absolutely dreadful. Mine are adults but if they had liked her 'songs' when they were children I would have failed as a parent.

LemonsOnTheMelons · 15/07/2023 13:54

StopBeingASquare · 15/07/2023 13:45

@LemonsOnTheMelons thankfully the videos were professionally recorded and high quality audio. I'd understand if they were recorded on a Motorola razor. But they weren't.

And again, I'm not taking the piss out of anyone.

Again, if you’ve never heard a live performance live, you cannot comment on what they are actually like to listen to live.

And yes, you were making fun of people thinking about their outfits already.

I'm genuinely asking the question to see what the hype is about so I'm interested in the replies and such of like which you are posting.

From the sounds of it she's an extremely talented song writer.

I don’t get the hype either. Or the cost of tickets. I got to meet Lady Gaga for a whole hour after one gig for far less than one VIP Taylor ticket 😂 it’s WILD.

i don’t rate Taylor’s voice either, and people say it’s her songwriting that’s great, but I can’t say I’ve ever looked so I can’t comment.

I just think indeed there’s similarities to her in Ed in the sense that we are swamped with their songs on radio repetitively and they all start to sound the same for me.

Jongleterre · 15/07/2023 13:54

With an attitude like that you did fail as a parent.

BillyNoM8s · 15/07/2023 13:58

She has a devoted fan base, much the same as Madonna, Spice Girls, Take That, Lady Gaga have/had.

There's always been hysteria over certain artists. When I was a kid the tv would always show footage of the hysterical and crying Michael Jackson and Take That fans. It was nuts. People fainting and being carried away... Spice girls had a huge following who dressed up, I myself had platform trainers...

Taylor has wide appeal as her music is inoffensive and mainstream. She interacts well with her followers. She might not be the greatest singer of all time, but she can sing, writes an absolute tonne of music. Seems to have decent values. People also get FOMO so will hustle for tickets even if they don't actually care that much.

I'm not a fan personally, but don't see the harm in other people enjoying her music.

The ticket system was introduced to try and stop scalpers I think and actually give fans a chance to get their hands on tickets directly.

Clarista · 15/07/2023 13:59

In relation to the hype about this particular tour, I’d say that’s because she wrote two of her most acclaimed albums on lockdown and gained a lot of fans during that time. She then subsequently released a massively well received album to all her new fans, then announced this tour, which on top of all the hype from those three albums is an ‘eras’ tour covering every album so far. That’s never happened before, hence the rush of old and new fans clamouring for tickets.

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 13:59

She's absolutely dreadful. Mine are adults but if they had liked her 'songs' when they were children I would have failed as a parent.

I think you’ve probably failed anyway if you would be so judgemental about their music tastes.

Now go and shake it off.....the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate..... 🎶

I've never seen anything like it! I'm now educated that she is a talented songwriter, stands up for womens rights. (Which of course is appealing and the right thing when you have such a huge platform.)

But I think she has such a bang average voice. But you only say this if you're trying to be a 'cool girl' mind!
