To think personal hygiene caused this

So say someone has developed a HUGE inward abscess on their bottom, really close to their sphincter. Been to hospital etc, it needs to soften before then can lance/drain. Said person showers after work, never at weekends… however for the last 5 weeks they have been out of work whilst waiting for site progression (they can’t do their job until other jobs are completed etc), so have only showered if they are attending something. So let’s say out of 5 weeks of not working I estimate 2 showers…. (Yup grim).
Now they have this anal abscess and the fluid leaking out literally smells of Faeces. They are saying it’s NOTHING to do with personal hygiene, I think it really is. HELP!!’

It's summer. You should really wash/shower every day, or every other at a push

DaftyLass · 14/07/2023 21:04

I'm not about to play doctor, but keep yourself clean, no matter what.
But also, how is this your business , why involve yourself with someone else's hind end,?

Yorkshirelass04 · 14/07/2023 21:04

I wouldn't be giving them the benefit of the doubt, put it that way.

RoseAndRose · 14/07/2023 21:05

Not washing is grim.

But it's not necessarily the cause of an abscess

whatfreshheck · 14/07/2023 21:06

Nurse here. Abscesses like this aren't often caused by bad hygiene. Ingrown hairs etc can cause them. In this case however I would suggest that lack of personal hygiene certainly hasn't helped.....

Daffodildilys · 14/07/2023 21:06

Pilonidal sonus??

Daffodildilys · 14/07/2023 21:06

Sinus

Juanmartinez · 14/07/2023 21:07

My friend had a perianal abscess and she's very clean .

Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould · 14/07/2023 21:11

I’m laughing at some answers (mainly as I agree). But surely not washing won’t have helped!!! On the plus side said person has been having two showers a day since I suggested not washing might not have helped!!!

How do you know all this though

I’m not suggesting abscesses are caused by not being clean. (Apologies if it seems like it) x

It's not that simple - DH had a pilonoidal cyst above his butthole and it was emptied by a very nauseous GP then packed and cleaned almost daily by a brave nurse at the surgery for weeks.

DH definitely showers daily and frequently twice daily if he's sweaty (physical job).

What medical care does he have at present? The smell should be managed very early in the process AFAIK?

Beseen22 · 14/07/2023 21:26

Perianal abscesses and pilonidal cysts are quite common in young folk. I can honestly say I've never looked after anyone with either condition who looked unkempt. The majority are taken to theatre pretty quick for incision and drainage, I've never seen them discharging to let soften.

Whilst the person you know should be showering more frequently this attitude is kind of from the same school of thought of people who have acne are dirty. They are generally genetically more vulnerable (more hair in perianal area than you or I, prone to ingrown hairs, people who have repeat problems are often later diagnosed with chrons, those with diabetes would be prone to slower skin healing so would be more at risk, people with jobs that require sitting such as long distance lorry driver). I guess that a period of increased stress (such as being out of work for 5 weeks) may cause someone to more vulnerable to common infections.

Lol, no it’s not my attitude that these things happen to unclean people etc. (again sorry if that’s how it appeared). Buy when I googled (yep I know I know lol) it mentioned poor hygiene as a cause). I have really felt for him, he’s been in agony. He does have a lot of hair so that may not have helped.
He went to urgent care as he felt unwell and his hands and feet were cold.. which worried me about potential sepsis. They said it was too hard to “lance”, so gave him antibiotics. But to go back within 3 days of it hadn't popped. It hasn’t but has been weeping this brown fluid which o can only describe as smelling of poo.
I think the purpose of this post was more of me reiterating to him the importance of washing. Working or not.
Yep to the poster who said he was disgusting, totally agree… he would happily not wash or wear clean clothes if he could. I think he has PDA or something, he’s happy so it doesn’t matter kind of attitude. I just needed to not feel bad for telling him his lack of hygiene hasn’t helped.

The bigger issue is that you have a DP who understands he needs to be hygienic in public, but dgaf about not washing while sharing a living space with you.

Beseen22 · 14/07/2023 21:56

Were they just going to lance it urgent care??! Thats insane. Unless it was very superficial that would be a big no for me. If I'm honest the leaking of what smells like stool would make me concerned that a fistula has formed? I would be wanting that seen by surgeons as soon as possible. I know there are other factors at play and his hygiene is poor but he must be feeling awful and mortified that he's leaking stool.

TheLurpackYears · 14/07/2023 21:59

If ithe discharge smells of poo, are the professionals responsible certain it's not a fistula? Not washing to the extreme is grim, but scrupulously clean people get removed too.

SlippySarah · 14/07/2023 22:09

I am pretty sure that lack of showering does not cause abscesses. There are lots of people who get these types of things who are scrupulously clean and hygenic and there are people who never shower for various reasons and are perfectly healthy. I would not want to live with someone who stank to high heaven, I am sure it would effect most personal relationships, but the frequency that one washes oneself is down to personal choice. There are downsides to washing too often as well.
