To think personal hygiene caused this

So say someone has developed a HUGE inward abscess on their bottom, really close to their sphincter. Been to hospital etc, it needs to soften before then can lance/drain. Said person showers after work, never at weekends… however for the last 5 weeks they have been out of work whilst waiting for site progression (they can’t do their job until other jobs are completed etc), so have only showered if they are attending something. So let’s say out of 5 weeks of not working I estimate 2 showers…. (Yup grim).
Now they have this anal abscess and the fluid leaking out literally smells of Faeces. They are saying it’s NOTHING to do with personal hygiene, I think it really is. HELP!!’

This 'someone' needs a good steep in a dettol bath.

I’m not suggesting abscesses are caused by not being clean. (Apologies if it seems like it) x

However, that is literally what you said. Both in your title and in your OP...

"To think personal hygiene caused this" is the title of your thread. Cause, as in what CAUSED the abscess.

"They are saying it’s NOTHING to do with personal hygiene, I think it really is." is how you ended your post. Again, blaming it on hygiene.

Great if you realised you were wrong, but that is what you said.

Abscesses /boils near the groin and cold hands/feet are signs of diabetes.

I know. :(

Moonmelodies · 14/07/2023 22:19

How unlike the home life of our late dear Queen.

I know. :(

Can also be other things
I have both and mine are hidradenitis supprativa (the cold feet is my thyroid!)

I'm never out the shower/bath/river swimming but my mum had HS too

Dacadactyl · 14/07/2023 22:20

I can't actually imagine this was caused by bad hygiene. The reason I say this is that it's only recently people have washed their whole bodies every day.

Mind you, people mightve been walking round with arse abcesses in the middle ages and we'd be none the wiser.

Elsiebear90 · 14/07/2023 22:22

Poor hygiene can absolutely contribute to someone developing an perineal abscess. If the area is not cleaned regularly it will be damp and have much higher levels of bacteria which obviously increased the risk of an infection. Obviously it is not the only cause, but the advice to prevent this type of abscess is to practice good hygiene.

Even without the bum-rot, washing once a month is hardly to be recommended. All of him must stink, not just his nether regions.

ikno · 14/07/2023 21:13

How do you know all this though

Because it’s obviously her husband? Good grief.

OP, poor hygiene doesn’t cause abscesses. Obviously showering fairly regularly is preferable to not showering, in general. But nothing to do with abscesses so yes, YABU to think personal hygiene has caused this.

So what did you mean when you said you thought personal hygiene caused it in your OP then? Hmm

Fluffe · 14/07/2023 22:34

Christ. I just said oh my god out loud reading the op! Absolutely rank.

AngelAurora · 14/07/2023 22:36

Hairs can cause this

Thankyou. I do agree and maybe in my post I should have said (contributed)to said abscess.
Yea also to him being “disgusting”
Im just frustrated with me trying to explain you don’t need to be dirty (as in covered in muck) to be dirty if that makes sense.
also thanks to those mentioning a possible fistula…I’m waiting to approach that theory lol.

Those who mentioned diabetes etc. I’ve been suspecting this for a while myself. I’m type 2 (recently diagnosed after having GD) and was warned about watching cuts etc for becoming infected. But that’s me, I don’t want my conditions and symptoms projecting to him.

I just want to shake him
and tell him he needs to me self aware of himself and that nothing can become something when you don’t look after yourself 😊

Hence the AIBU. I told him his not cleaning unless he’s been to work was probably the reason he had it!

Ok so people never used to bathe as much as now and I don't think that abscesses (sp) are more of an issue now - I'm a nurse. If they were how come I shower every day and still got one?

Do you sleep in the same bed? I couldn’t.

Bearpawk · 14/07/2023 22:41

You're letting someone in your bed who's only showered once in five weeks ?
Give over.

MonkeypuzzleClimber · 14/07/2023 22:41

That’s what I’ve been bathing it in lol. Personally I love a good Dettol bath, have one once a month or so… my friends think
im odd, but I love them.

Abscesses aren’t a result of being dirty. You can claim all you like that this isn’t what you meant, but it clearly is.

Obviously said person should still be washing anyway.

Ponoka7 · 14/07/2023 22:43

My DD, who is very clean started to get abscesses, last year, she has just had fistula surgery. You have suggested that his lack of washing caused this. There are lots of causes for abscesses, it's rare that not washing is the cause. People used to get weekly (if that) baths, there wasn't epidemics of abscesses. Previous to that bathing was twice yearly and fabrics were courser, no toilet paper etc. You are looking to blame him and posters have jumped on board, when they no little about the subject.

I don’t think commenters are blaming him. Just voicing repulsion at the lack of washing.

I’m sorry, and you’re completely right. I probably should have said “In this situation” with regards to my post. I know anyone can get them.
Though does you being a nurse mean you shouldn’t get them, as you’re pointing out (quite rightly) anyone can get them?

I'm not about to play doctor, but keep yourself clean, no matter what.
But also, how is this your business , why involve yourself with someone else's hind end,?

Perhaps it is her partner and she has to go to bed with that bum every night.

Are they depressed? Sounds like self neglect
