Hi we took our 3 month old puppy to get his nails cut today, our puppy was on a lead & other dog (Collie) was on an extendable lead with his owner. When we walked in the Collie barked in our puppies face making him cry & run away. So should the owner of the Collie of said sorry? Should we have said anything to owner (we didn’t as we didn’t want to cause a scene over a dog barking making our puppy scared).

The fog was most likely Not scared or upset!!!

It's a dog. Put in its place

As dogs tend to do! ' upset'???

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 12/07/2023 20:19

OP you are getting a rough (or ruff) ride! For what it's worth extendable leads are a terrible invention and the other dog should have been under control, not free to come right up close to your pup. If any of my dogs had behaved like that they would have been told not to be so silly, brought back to my side and I would have apologised and reassured your pup. There is nothing really to apologise for - just dogs being dogs - but out of courtesy I would have spoken to you and if you seemed upset I would have done my best to reassure you that your pup was fine and would get over the shock in no time, especially if you reassured him and made it clear that there was nothing to panic about.

primoseyellow · 12/07/2023 20:19

@Treehouse00 I can totally understand you feeling like this, of course you don't want your puppy to get a fright , that's normal. Next time you are going to a new place and you are not sure what other dogs are inside you can always carry your puppy at first, then put him down.

Try to stay calm and so your puppy has confidence in you. Next time a dog barks at him just calmly give your puppy a treat and ignore the barky dog.

Meanwhile, water is wet...

FOJN · 12/07/2023 20:22

Your post is providing some entertainment for other posters OP, try not to take it too much to heart but please do sign your dog up for puppy socialisation classes.

The longer you have your own dog and are around other dogs the more you will be able to read them and will grow in confidence but it is really important that your inexperience doesn't influence how your dog learns to interact with other dogs.

A poorly socialised/nervous/reactive dog is no fun for them or you. It will be far easier to take advice and get things right first time than try to correct problems you may have a hand in making.

You are getting a hard time on here OP, if I were you I would take your pup back to the vets during their quiet periods, to build up some positive experiences. Go in, sit down, give a treat, sniff around - if possible - come out again.
If I had been the older collie owner, I would have apologised if my dog has frightened your pup, and most of the dog owners I know would have done the same.
For future reference I would post this kind of thing on 'the doghouse' board.

@MsPrism

exactly.

The Collie should have been on a short lead & under control, not getting in the face of a small puppy.

midsomermurderess · 12/07/2023 20:25

Did your mum ask you to post this?

OrangeFlorange · 12/07/2023 20:26

You'll meet lots of barky dogs when you're out with your dog, it's really not worth giving a second thought to, it's just what some dogs do.

I'd just work on building your pups confidence to avoid any fear or reactivity around other dogs in future :)

TequilaNights · 12/07/2023 20:28

Older dogs teach younger dogs manners, be grateful, a yelp is a normal dog behaviour.

londonrach · 12/07/2023 20:28

Collie taught puppy to respect it's elder s...none issue. Please make sure you socialise your puppy. It's daddy talking. Yabu

Doggy not daddy

vimtolove · 12/07/2023 20:29

Dear Christ this cannot be genuine

Dogs bark at each other - Your puppy will learn to deal with it. The other dog was on a lead. You are overreacting 🤷🏼‍♀️

This. Your puppy needs to be socialised and learn the language of dogs.

WhatADrabCarpet · 12/07/2023 20:30

Couldn't get past '...of said...' to be honest.

Chapter 1 of owning a dog

  1. dogs have claws, not nails
  2. dogs don’t cry, they whine.
  3. other dogs will bark at them
  4. you don’t ask other dog owners for an apology if their dog barks at yours.
  5. you don’t need to apologise if your dog barks at another dog, or person, or bird, or bike.

This.

Oh dear OP. Your dog is going to get barked at many more times in its life. It is also going to bark at other dogs.

Dogs bark. Get over it. What they do not do is cry.

Isthisexpected · 12/07/2023 20:31

This has cheered me right up.

GreyRockChick · 12/07/2023 20:33

Stop the world, I want to get off.

This can't be for real??

pollykitty · 12/07/2023 20:33

You're asking the wrong question, which should be 'Why do I own a dog when I clearly know nothing about dogs, or their behavior?'

MrsMarzetti · 12/07/2023 20:34

Seriously ? You pup is animal not a baby.

If this is your first dog (sounds like it) then you really need to start reading books on puppy and dog behaviour and anything relating to its breed.

Then training as soon as its old enough.

Because you really don't seem to have much of a clue...

Waffle78 · 12/07/2023 20:38

Dog's bark it's they're way of letting us know they're there. I'm sure your pup will bark at other dogs and pups as well. The dog never harmed him. Our next door neighbor's dog bark at us if we don't notice he's there. My daughter is scared of dogs I love the dog he's a lovely old mutt. Doesn't mean any harm. Should I expect an apology every time?😂😂😂

tracylamont13 · 12/07/2023 20:40

No. Dogs bark at each other. That's normal.
