Apparent JSO protestor throws confetti at George Osborne's wedding. The danger! The terror! Front page news for the D Mail. Let's stamp this dangerous practice out before it becomes a habit.

What? You been drinking love?

Laughingstock1991 · 09/07/2023 08:27

As much as I think Osborne is an utter tosser and I despise the tories, targeting his wedding is really bad and not right.

Saying, I do support other actions from Just Stop Oil. The world is on fire and we do have to stop digging up fossil fuels.

MollysBrolly · 09/07/2023 08:29

I saw this and all I could think was how similar GO and his wife look. Same shape noses and mouths.

BandyLionAndDurdock · 09/07/2023 08:41

I’m torn.

As PP said above, the world is literally on fire. Climate science is undeniable. We are causing this. Governments are not acting in our best interests. Over 30 years of peaceful protest and campaigning has not been enough. Even children striking wasn’t enough.

So…WTF are we supposed to do?

Direct action is necessary now.

I do feel that a wedding might be a step too far, but then on the other hand may be a step too far is what it will take. It’s beyond what we would considered reasonable behaviour in normal circumstances…but this is an emergency on a scale never been seen before and it will effect EVERYONE!

Harder to grow food everywhere. Mass migration. Global instability and wars. Is that the legacy we want to leave for our children? We are already seeing it and we think our little island will be protected from it. It won’t. People are already dying. People are already suffering worse health because of climate change - even here in the UK. People are already being displaced. 1/3 if Pakistan flooded last year. Canada is having such ferocious fires New York air was polluted. Parts of India had temperatures of 50 degrees plus recently. I could go on and on and on about these things and back it up with reputable links. But I won’t because we all know that this is the truth. We just don’t want to think about it. We just don’t want to change.

We are all culpable. We are all responsible. We all need to act.

So if not this, what? What else is there to do?

LameBorzoi · 09/07/2023 08:47

Exactly, how dare we mildly inconvenience people when millions will starve due to drought?

@Laughingstock1991

No it's literally the perfect thing to target. It's low stakes (just a party) and yet hit every headline.

Would you prefer the old lady threw herself under a horse instead?

People really don't understand the mechanics of non violent protest, it's depressing

Inconvenienced or not.......the world is still exactly the same. Nothings changed

Tinkerbyebye · 09/07/2023 08:54

I am sick of the lot of them, JSO, XR etc

the more they piss me off the more I am going to do the opposite of what they want. They are utter hypocrites the lot of them

TeenDivided · 09/07/2023 08:55

@BandyLionAndDurdock 1/3 of Pakistan did not flood last year. That misstatement was fact checked on radio 4's More or Less.

Americano75 · 09/07/2023 08:56

Can't believe some woman threw confetti at a wedding.

OddBoots · 09/07/2023 09:01

They threw confetti, they didn't throw paint or even powder, no actual harm done, nothing lasting happened but a point was made (and it really pales compared to the impact of the email one of their guests sent).

Isitsixoclockalready · 09/07/2023 09:05

The right wing papers want everyone to behave themselves as the earth is slowly destroyed.

LlynTegid · 09/07/2023 09:11

Man leaves wife. Then marries a younger woman who worked with him.

No sympathy for the disruption, every condemnation for the poison pen emails.

Was the confetti made locally? Was it rose petals? Or was it dyed paper shipped halfway across the world?
I couldn't give a flying fuck about Osborne getting married, but if they used paper from China, they have single handedly added to the carbon footprint.

DoormatBob · 09/07/2023 09:52

I don't really understand JSO, they want to stop oil but how? By replacing everything with batteries? Do they know how batteries are made?

Also you have the likes of Lewis Hamilton supporting them. You burn oil for entertainment purposes!

lepoppo · 09/07/2023 10:04

@brokenlore I really don't get this argument, there isn't the same argument for anything that is a crime/harmful.

I am not trying to be goady but would like to understand, in your opinion do you have to be someone who creates no harm to the environment (very difficult in todays world) to have an opinion on massive environmental harms?

If you get robbed/assaulted people don't bring up the fact that you once forgot to scan something at a self checkout or that you once had a fight with a sibling as a child, in your opinion why are environmental harms different?

It's not working though is it? It's just pissing people off.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 10:42

It's a shitty thing to do. Only a shitty person would do it.

I don't have any kind words for George Osbourne but it's a dick move.

BandyLionAndDurdock · 09/07/2023 14:57

TeenDivided

I stand corrected. I must have missed that. I amend my post from ‘1/3 Pakistan flooded’ to ‘a vast, history making, area of Pakistan flooded’. It makes little difference to my point that climate change is a global emergency, governments are not doing enough, peaceful protest and campaigning over the last 30 years wasn’t listened to and now we are so close to dangerous, irreversible tipping points that urgent and robust action is needed. Direct action is the only tool left for general population.

OrwellianTimes · 09/07/2023 15:02

Pretty dick move to interrupt someone’s wedding day regardless of who the person is. It’s obviously mean to upset the couple.

cocoloco117 · 09/07/2023 15:05

I’m ok with this as it’s a cause I agree with and he’s a fucking prick.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 15:09

And when somebody behaves like this with someone you agree with and like - then it's a problem, right?

Sunnysunbun · 09/07/2023 15:10

I think they're heroes. I'm astounded by their bravery. We need to fight for our children's future.
Their lives are going to be awful unless we stop oil now.
