Apparent JSO protestor throws confetti at George Osborne's wedding. The danger! The terror! Front page news for the D Mail. Let's stamp this dangerous practice out before it becomes a habit.

If it wasn't JSO, they'd have said so Straight away, not tweeted the video and praised the protestor. Theynonly defined it after the pushback started.

They get pushback from every protest they do. They very clearly do not care about doing unpopular things. I think they'd say if it was them.

Pakistan and lots of the worst and soonest effected countries do not contribute much carbon per capita at all.

Mr Smith down the road is beating up his wife. He’s not doing anything to change so why should I? I’ll keep beating up my wife til he stops. I’ll donate to women’s aid to offset it though.

But I'm not beating up my wife. I sometimes name call her so maybe tackle the beaters first?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/07/2023 19:14

I mean it's a stupid analogy. I never said I don't do anything or the UK shouldn't but I think it's absolute nonsense some Asian countries do fuck all but are huge contributers to it.

So bad how everyone is ignoring the contents of the email and not questioning the convenient timing of these events. Those women mentioned on that email 😢

Your prejudice is showing.
Why should JSO target the Chinese embassy?

  1. they're in the UK
  2. the UK government lies about its green policy
  3. like it or not, the Chinese have a better green policy than most nations, 'saving the world' is an irrelevance
  4. 'trustafarian'? Should only certain types be allowed to protest? The suffragettes were very middle class.

I suppose blaming foreigners is easier than holding the Tories to account for anything for some people.

So many words, do little sense.

This place is totally batshit. What is this post even about? Can anyone explain. Is it the right thread?

It was a reply to that poster who said ‘what are those countries mentioned doing?’ I am basically pointing out what a spurious argument it is when people say things like ‘Well China …’ etc.

The facts are clear;

  1. The science is unequivocal.
  2. Climate change is happening and faster than predicted. We are driving it.
  3. We are close to irreversible and catastrophic tipping points.
  4. 30+ years of peaceful protest and serious campaigning haven’t had enough impact.
  5. We are heading for (in fact already have started to see) food scarcity, extreme and dangerous weather events, mass migration as vast areas become uninhabitable, premature deaths and more disease.
  6. As things get worse we will see more crime, conflict and war increase. Morality is a higher order human need and if you are starving you get desperate.
  7. Governments are not acting in ways that will protect us from the worst of it.

So. Over 30 years of campaigning and educating, alongside peaceful protest, have not had enough of an impact on policy, the Government’s own advisory panel says it’s not making the right decisions so WTF can we do? JSO are raiding this issue again and again because it’s an emergency.

In normal circumstances their behaviour is dreadful. In an emergency that no one in power is paying attention to, their behaviour is many things; brave, understandable, sensible, necessary.

Martin Luther King Jr. advised that before taking steps of direct action that one first ensure there is an issue, educate others about the issue, negotiate with your opponent in a way to elicit their cooperation rather than turning them into an enemy, and then take direct action if no change is forthcoming.

Parsley1234 · 09/07/2023 21:44

Most people know there’s an issue however if the government is doing nothing except being complicit in the situation what can be done ? Most people won’t travel less give up meat not have children give up their cars what is the answer ?

BandyLionAndDurdock · 10/07/2023 07:18

Parsley1234

Exactly. That’s why we need those that do care to stand up and be counted. JSO are engaging in direct, non-violent action because that is the only thing left now.

if the media reported on it all honestly then people would change their habits. It’s frightening. Legislation is needed too.

To be honest, if I was part of the younger generation I’d be so angry at my generation. I think we could see some serious backlash when it becomes more apparent. We’ve been greedy and reckless and we are currently setting them up for unimaginable hardship.

Parsley1234 · 10/07/2023 09:04

Sad to say I don’t think people will change their habits
the biggest issue is having children isn’t it whose not going to breed ? And travel ? It sounds like a totally shit future it’s not looking good. What is the answer ? JSO can do what they want but it’s not working is it it’s just pissing people off

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 10/07/2023 09:32

The company I work for set a target of net carbon-zero by 2050 and a reduction to 50% by 2030.
We are doing numerous things to achieve this.

So one thing we can look at is working for companies actually invested in reducing their footprint rather than waiting on government to do anything.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 10/07/2023 09:45

There is no clear answer, of course, - we haven’t been here before and don’t have a roadmap for correction.
however, the UK government could invest in upgrading the national grid (and should have done this years ago) so that new solar farms and onshore wind farms can be built.
create a useable scheme for subsidised home improvements in insulation etc, especially for landlords.
offer affordable alternatives to domestic gas and oil.
not offer any new drilling or fracking contracts, ever.
that would be a start.
and the more awareness people like JSO raise about the emergency situation we are moving into, the better.

Parsley1234 · 10/07/2023 10:07

@Twoshoesnewshoes what are affordable alternatives to oil and gas ? JSO are making people angry and that turns people off the cause I think

Twoshoesnewshoes · 10/07/2023 10:21

Potentially hydrogen, and for heating oil there are organisations exploring using bio oil (as yet no government funds for research).
I guess solar for every home that can host it, again not affordable for most people because the government do not have a centralised finance package available.

Parsley1234 · 10/07/2023 10:42

@Twoshoesnewshoes aloy of roofs can’t support solar panels I don’t think

Sigmama · 10/07/2023 10:57

They don't make everyone angry

I don’t know- I don’t know that every teenager out there won’t blame us but not simultaneously drive everywhere, take trips abroad, drink out of plastic bottles, continue with fast fashion and beauty made from plastic (as much because of affordability as we did)

Parsley1234 · 10/07/2023 11:55

Renewables are cheaper than gas and oil according to experts with far more knowledge than me.

To be honest, I don’t think JSO care about how people feel about what they are doing. In fact annoying people and being a thorn in the side of society is kind of the point. If they just stood in parliament square with a placard it wouldn’t get any media attention.

The suffragettes didn’t care about being popular either. Ghandi and Martin LK didn’t either. Or may be they cared but put doing the ‘right thing’ first. Radical tea-towels (random I know) do fantastic tea towels with all the times peaceful (and not so peaceful) protest has led to significant change. This stuff works. Eventually.

If ‘naice’ middle class grannies are so concerned about their grandchildren’s future they are happy to risk being arrested, that sends a loud and clear message. I’m grateful to them and would do it myself if my circumstances allowed. I want to look my DC in the eye when they realise what’s happening, and say ‘I did what I could’.

I think direct action now is the only sane behaviour TBH. I know that sounds extreme, but compared to business as usual/head in the sand/doing the opposite of what is needed out of anger towards JSO, given the gravity and urgency of the situation, it’s far saner.

BandyLionAndDurdock · 10/07/2023 18:41

I work with young people and lots are very switched on and make very conscious decisions. Lots aren’t, but only because they don’t know. If you don’t read a decent news source, you’d have very little idea about just how dire the situation we are in is. They will start to realise. They will grow up and look back and be astounded at our greed/stupidity/selfishness. Some young people are rightly VERY angry and/or depressed by it.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 10/07/2023 19:18

I'd be interested to see how these types of protest effect the opinion ratings of groups like JSO. Personally I think they are morons, and I'm not a climate change denier either.

We need our government to take climate change seriously and the only way to do that is make it a priority cause for voters. The Conservatives have watered down green policy after green policy, and the masses have accepted this and/or ignored it because other issues (Brexit, boarders etc) are more important to them.

So we DO need groups to highlight climate change, make people aware of what is happening now, and educate the voters to make climate change a key part of elections next time. With this in mind JSO and XR need to be kept as far away from the public as possible, because they do not come across well at all.

XR, as far as I'm aware, research and base their methods on proven techniques. They look at what has worked in the past, and know that polite appeal to reason doesn't work, but disruptive protest does.

I don't really understand JSO, they want to stop oil but how? By replacing everything with batteries? Do they know how batteries are made?

Also you have the likes of Lewis Hamilton supporting them. You burn oil for entertainment purposes!

@DoormatBob This is their mission statement.

WHAT DOES JUST STOP OIL WANT?

We demand that the UK government makes a statement that it will immediately halt all future licensing and consents for the exploration, development and production of fossil fuels in the U.K.
