Apparent JSO protestor throws confetti at George Osborne's wedding. The danger! The terror! Front page news for the D Mail. Let's stamp this dangerous practice out before it becomes a habit.

I’m torn.

As PP said above, the world is literally on fire. Climate science is undeniable. We are causing this. Governments are not acting in our best interests. Over 30 years of peaceful protest and campaigning has not been enough. Even children striking wasn’t enough.

So…WTF are we supposed to do?

Direct action is necessary now.

I do feel that a wedding might be a step too far, but then on the other hand may be a step too far is what it will take. It’s beyond what we would considered reasonable behaviour in normal circumstances…but this is an emergency on a scale never been seen before and it will effect EVERYONE!

Harder to grow food everywhere. Mass migration. Global instability and wars. Is that the legacy we want to leave for our children? We are already seeing it and we think our little island will be protected from it. It won’t. People are already dying. People are already suffering worse health because of climate change - even here in the UK. People are already being displaced. 1/3 if Pakistan flooded last year. Canada is having such ferocious fires New York air was polluted. Parts of India had temperatures of 50 degrees plus recently. I could go on and on and on about these things and back it up with reputable links. But I won’t because we all know that this is the truth. We just don’t want to think about it. We just don’t want to change.

We are all culpable. We are all responsible. We all need to act.

So if not this, what? What else is there to do?

I completely agree and I don't know what the solution is. It seems either-

  • People do stunts like this and it gets coverage but all negative; or
  • People make reasoned arguments for more and faster action now on climate change and get no coverage.

What is the third way we're missing, the thing people can do to wake everyone up to the urgency of the situation which will get coverage but won't annoy people? I just don't know. I suspect that all direct action faces this problem- I bet people grumbled about suffragettes chaining themselves to railings in the same terms.

On climate change, I suspect things will therefore get worse until the scale of the disaster is obvious to all, and then action will be take at international level and compliance will be mandatory, with real consequences for everyone's quality of life, in the same way that compliance was mandatory for covid restrictions. It's a grim prospect.

And when somebody behaves like this with someone you agree with and like - then it's a problem, right?

Yes, that’s correct. All causes and targets are not equal.

BandyLionAndDurdock · 09/07/2023 15:20

DoormatBob

The governments own advisors have said we need to stop extracting oil. It’s very clear what needs to happen.

Lower consumption.
Insulate houses.
move to renewables.

Extracting more oil and gas is insane.

Kitkattt · 09/07/2023 15:24

Funny isn’t it that no one has mention THE EMAIL since this and it’s the front of all the papers. Hmmmmmm

Chocolatepumpkin · 09/07/2023 15:26

Absolute dick move it was not a public event, it was a wedding. And other than annoying the masses what is the actual point of throwing orange crap everywhere? All that ever happens is some poor sod on minimum wage has to clean up their mess. And how many go slows have created more pollution because the traffic is at a standstill?

Zebedee55 · 09/07/2023 15:29

They are just becoming total bores now. There was one ranging on LBC that it wasn't them. Ten minutes later another one phones in and says it was.

It seems they're confusing themselves now...🙄

And when moderate and likeable people won't throw their hat into the political arena because activists of all ilks have lost their minds and are behaving like fucking delinquents?

Peony654 · 09/07/2023 15:33

I think it’s all hilarious and totally support it.

Yellowdays · 09/07/2023 15:35

I agree that he is a hideous man, but I don't think it's ever right to do this on someone's wedding day.

newnamethanks · 09/07/2023 15:42

Throwing confetti at a wedding? Public horsewhipping not good enough for them. Utterly shameful behaviour. Poor George. Anyone might mistake him for a public figure, responsible for some of the most harmful political decisions of the recent past which have caused misery to thousands.

I don't think JSO are heroes or 'brave'. Whether the ordinary man understands their reasons for protesting or not, it's royally pissing people off. Why not protest outside the Chinese embassy, much braver than chucking orange confetti over George Osbourne.

Quite.

Hobbi · 09/07/2023 15:59

It wasn't JSO. Wonder if any previous posters might adjust their views now.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 16:01

Well I don't have any better regard for the woman but it's better that it/ if it wasn't a politically motivated stunt.

She should be throwing confetti at the Chinese embassy shouldn't she?

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 16:03

No, but it would be braver.

Hobbi · 09/07/2023 16:04

@FourTeaFallOut
But you bizarrely thought JSO should.

NorthWestThree · 09/07/2023 16:05

It wasn't a Just Stop Oil protest

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 16:06

I didn't say they should. I simply agreed that if they wanted to demonstrate the courage of their convictions, then it would be braver than annoying tolerant people.

But why the Chinese embassy. The Chinese lead the world in green technologies.

babbscrabbs · 09/07/2023 16:08

OddBoots · 09/07/2023 09:01

They threw confetti, they didn't throw paint or even powder, no actual harm done, nothing lasting happened but a point was made (and it really pales compared to the impact of the email one of their guests sent).

Haven't heard anyone saying sending that email was just "not right".

It wasn't a JSO action, I wonder if the woman was inspired by it. If so, fair play to her. Helping to raise awareness and doing no damage.

Part of me however wonders if it was an inside job, to get sympathy for George, get all the anti JSO types frothing, distract from the email, make sure everyone gets to see George and Thea happily married etc?!

KateJohns · 09/07/2023 16:11

Just Stop Oil should protest the people that can change things.

Gonlie in front of tankers coming from the Shell refineries or go to Dubai and protest over there..

Wtf can George Osbourne's new wife do about it? Why spoil her day? She's already marrying a shit weasel. 🤪

Yes, China are the real eco warriors. Men can be women. Up is down. Alright.
