Apparent JSO protestor throws confetti at George Osborne's wedding. The danger! The terror! Front page news for the D Mail. Let's stamp this dangerous practice out before it becomes a habit.

I’m torn.

As PP said above, the world is literally on fire. Climate science is undeniable. We are causing this. Governments are not acting in our best interests. Over 30 years of peaceful protest and campaigning has not been enough. Even children striking wasn’t enough.

So…WTF are we supposed to do?

Direct action is necessary now.

I do feel that a wedding might be a step too far, but then on the other hand may be a step too far is what it will take. It’s beyond what we would considered reasonable behaviour in normal circumstances…but this is an emergency on a scale never been seen before and it will effect EVERYONE!

Harder to grow food everywhere. Mass migration. Global instability and wars. Is that the legacy we want to leave for our children? We are already seeing it and we think our little island will be protected from it. It won’t. People are already dying. People are already suffering worse health because of climate change - even here in the UK. People are already being displaced. 1/3 if Pakistan flooded last year. Canada is having such ferocious fires New York air was polluted. Parts of India had temperatures of 50 degrees plus recently. I could go on and on and on about these things and back it up with reputable links. But I won’t because we all know that this is the truth. We just don’t want to think about it. We just don’t want to change.

We are all culpable. We are all responsible. We all need to act.

So if not this, what? What else is there to do?

How much are these countries doing to combat it?

It. Wasn't. Just. Stop. Oil.

I. Don't. Care. How. Often. This. Is. Claimed. Or. How. Many. Periods. You. Use.

If it wasn't JSO, they'd have said so Straight away, not tweeted the video and praised the protestor. Theynonly defined it after the pushback started.

It. Was. Just. Stop. Oil.

Hobbi · 09/07/2023 16:24

@KateJohns
So you don't care about the truth? Ok.

StaunchMomma · 09/07/2023 16:29

The person wasn't from JSO. They've stated categorically that the person is not a member.

I wonder who else would want to take attention off the wedding email, detailing the actions of the slimy little twunt that is the goom?

This is just your deduction, not truth.

Yes, they posted the video and applauded the action BUT the have stated officially that they didn't take the video and they didn't plan it, nor is the person one of them.

You can decide they're lying if you like but if I have the choice of believing a Tory or some protestors I know who has the bigger chance of being the liar.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 16:38

Do you believe that JSO are so dense that they were hoodwinked into celebrating an twatty act against a dislikable Tory which was actually a stage distraction pantomime.

Well that has ended badly. Even Rachel Reeves has described JSO as pathetic and tedious today. What an awful pr tactic.

Just. Stop. Oil. UK. Target. The. UK

SusiePevensie · 09/07/2023 16:42

Well, if we'd insulated everything we'd have been a lot more resilient when gas prices went up. Shame Osborne stopped Labour's progress there.

PatientZorro · 09/07/2023 16:42

Acheyknees · 09/07/2023 15:43

I don't think JSO are heroes or 'brave'. Whether the ordinary man understands their reasons for protesting or not, it's royally pissing people off. Why not protest outside the Chinese embassy, much braver than chucking orange confetti over George Osbourne.

Exactly this. It’s performance protest for the attention but never targeting the real culprits (too difficult) and instead damaging support for their cause by always going for the easy targets.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 16:45

Ah, hang on there, were you aware that China is reliably and honestly leading the charge for saving the world - and so conveniently these over-privileged, self-satisfied trustafarians don't have to take on one of the most oppressive regimes in the world at all??

Swrigh1234 · 09/07/2023 16:52

Die everyone see the woman who threw the confetti. It’s like life imitating art. That exactly what you would you would profile the narcissist to look like.

KateJohns · 09/07/2023 16:53

Media report JSO has poured confetti on a bride.

JSO tweet in celebration of the action and mockery of the bride at 7.24pm on a Saturday.
(They reply to that celebratory tweet 5 times in the space of an hour making it a thread about Osbourne)

Original tweet is seen 30million times.

One of the top replies to their tweet was at 8.43 by James Dreyfus and currently has 12k likes.

The replies to their tweet are 99.9% negative.

Was the first tweet about it a denial?
Nope.

Do they respond to James Dreyfus at 8.45pm and say, no it wasn't them?
Nope.

Do they respond to any of the papers reporting it as a JSO Action?
Nope, not a one.

Do they delete the celebratory tweet at 7.35pm and confirm it wasn't them?
Nope.

They wait until 13.14 the next day to deny it.

Now I don't know about anyone else but if I get accused of something I didn't do, I deny it straight away. I don't celebrate and repeatedly tweet gleefully about the thing I'm accused of. I don't let hundred of thousands of people see it and believe it was me and wait several hours before I deny it.

no doubt the woman will be found at some point and she'll say it wasn't JSO or anything to do with it, she was protesting The price of Orange Taffeta or some such bollocks and it was purely coincidence that she used the same colour as JSO etc.

Just stop oil are funded by…. Wait for it….an oil baron.

The whole thing is a con and these narcissist activists have been duped. They are being taken for a ride but continue to think they have stumbled on some moral cause.

Statement from JSO

https://twitter.com/JustStop_Oil/status/1678014729216770048?s=20

Confettigate: A Statement From Just Stop Oil

The lady who threw confetti in Bruton yesterday was upholding a tradition that is common across many cultures. We absolutely defend the right for people to throw confetti (of whatever colour) at weddings and other celebrations.

If it was a form of protest — which is yet to be established — we applaud it and thank the person concerned. It was peaceful and not especially disruptive, but got massive media attention for Just Stop Oil’s demand.

It has also helped people to recall that George Osborne, one of the main architects of economic austerity, is directly responsible for over 300,000 excess deaths, and that — as a newspaper editor — he was responsible for some of the most egregious climate-denying nonsense ever to darken the pages of mainstream mass media.

However, as much as we applaud the use of orange confetti at this wedding, we were not responsible.

Perhaps the press could focus on something more important now? Like the current government’s plans to licence over 100 new oil and gas projects, which will result in excess deaths the likes of which we have never seen. Or the fact that the UN Secretary General has said that ‘climate change is out of control’ as we’ve just seen the hottest average temperatures since records began. Or the fact that Canadian wildfires have now burned down an area the size of Portugal.

We are in catastrophically dangerous territory and the press have a moral responsibility to inform and educate people as to the causes of the crisis so that we can take action to defend ourselves. In 2023, it is simply criminal not to check your facts.

Hobbi · 09/07/2023 17:03

Ah, hang on there, were you aware that China is reliably and honestly leading the charge for saving the world - and so conveniently these over-privileged, self-satisfied trustafarians don't have to take on one of the most oppressive regimes in the world at all??

Your prejudice is showing.
Why should JSO target the Chinese embassy?

  1. they're in the UK
  2. the UK government lies about its green policy
  3. like it or not, the Chinese have a better green policy than most nations, 'saving the world' is an irrelevance
  4. 'trustafarian'? Should only certain types be allowed to protest? The suffragettes were very middle class.

I suppose blaming foreigners is easier than holding the Tories to account for anything for some people.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2023 17:18

Do I pre-judge people who have built a activist tactic which makes everyday people have to work around their antics, causing them to miss school, work, hospital appointments, get in the way of fire engine and disrupt civil life while they sit in economic comfort and insulated from the financial ramifications of their actions? Yes.

Do I believe that China has an actionable green policy that we will see in operation? Doubt it.

Do I care if you don't like my opinions? No.

JSO isn't a person. It's not even a company. It's a group of disparate activists. It's possible it took them that long to work out it wasn't a JSO member doing it.

And Just Stop Oil isn't funded by an oil baron, FFS

Love this post.

I'm torn too.

My first reaction to all the disruption they've been causing was negative. However the more publicity they get the more we hear about why they are doing it.

The message is getting across which was their aim.

I'm still dubious about all the disruption but I don't mind it as much as the gluing themselves to roads that's people have employed in the past.

Something has to be done but I don’t get the stop oil thing at all. How do we heat homes? I get if they banned people from flying unless necessary, made people eat less meat, got rid of more plastics, made companies more environmentally friendly, planted more trees etc etc etc but the one thing they can’t do until they find alternatives is stop heating homes in the winter time with oil or burning fossil fuels or using gas. They’d have to get each home up to code in terms of insulation and fit them with solar panels too. And we have a pellet burner before anyone says anything and last year a few places ran out of pellets so I wouldn’t be recommending that as an alternative to anything!!

Hobbi · 09/07/2023 17:35

"People love to twist the truth."

Yes. And, inspired by their (secret) heroes Johnson and Trump, just openly lie to defend right wing ideology.

LunaandLily · 09/07/2023 18:02

Lol! His wedding is a “step too far” but severely impacting the lives and wellbeing of 100s of 1000s of children, elderly and vulnerable people with greedy, callous policies? Well, that’s just fine! As long as the damage is enacted with decorum, eh? Hope he recovers from having little pieces of tissue paper tossed in his direction!

WeWereInParis · 09/07/2023 18:20

The woman threw confetti, nothing that would do any damage.

Also, JSO have said it wasn't organised by them.
